Abstract
Cette invention concerne des cellules électrochimiques, ainsi que des systèmes électrochimiques qui utilisent une plaque d'électrode unitaire ou faite d'une seule pièce et ci-après dénommée plaque d'électrode double (PED). Cette plaque assure la connexion électrique entre deux compartiments de cellules adjacents, le débit de courant dans les électrodes étant parallèle à la surface de travail de l'électrode. Les cellules sont conçues de manière à être assemblées en une pile contiguë de cellules (pile de cellules) similaire à un filtre-presse où les connexions électriques entre des cellules adjacentes se font à l'aide de la plaque d'électrode double. Dans un mode de réalisation, cette invention concerne un électrolyseur à piles multiples monopolaire qui utilise ces plaques d'électrode doubles, et dans lequel les plaques d'électrode doubles et planes servent à connecter les cellules dans des piles de cellules adjacentes. Les caractéristiques monopolaires de la cellule sont assurées par un espace d'air qui isole chaque pile adjacente de cellules connectées par chaque plaque d'électrode double. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, cette invention concerne un électrolyseur à pile unique qui utilise une plaque d'électrode double et pliée afin de connecter des cellules adjacentes dans ladite pile unique. Une paroi isolante sépare les compartiments de systèmes de paires d'électrodes adjacents qui sont connectés par la plaque d'électrode double à l'intérieur de cet électrolyseur. Dans encore un autre mode de réalisation, cette invention fait appel à des cadres de circulation d'électrolyte qui sont faits de matériaux élastomères formant des joints étanches aux fluides. Des enceintes rigides situées aux extrémités de chaque pile assurent la rigidité de la structure, ceci tout en offrant un site qui permet de mélanger l'électrolyte provenant de différentes piles d'un électrolyseur à piles multiples.
