Description
Process of extraction of titanium from its ores with concomitant production of nitrogenous products. The present invention relates to a process for extracting titanium from its ores with concomitant production of nitrogenous products. This process is characterized in that one mixes, with ores, coal and a metallic compound, heats in the presence of nitrogen, then treats the mixture with water vapor in a to obtain nitrogenous products and titanate, which are separated from the mixture by dissolution and converted into titanium oxide from which the titanium is obtained by reduction.
This process can be implemented, for example, as follows: With the titanium ore, good char and a metal, alkali, alkaline-earth or other salt or oxide (for example sodium carbonate) will be mixed. The whole will be reduced to powder. The quantities to to use are variable according to the contents of ore.
The following proportions are cited for for information: Titanium iron at 40% TiOl . . 1000 kg soda carbonate . . . . 750 kg Coal . . . . . . .
1000 kg The mixture will be heated6 in a nitrogenous medium to a temperature which will not exceed 1850 0 C. The mixture will absorb nitrogen and give rise to azides, carbides, carboazides etc., which will then be subjected to the action of water vapor at a temperature not exceeding 1800 0 C. </ B > There will there be release of ammonia, hydrocyanic acid etc. These various bodies are captured by means of suitable washing or condensation devices.
The mass which has undergone the action of water vapor will contain a large part of the metals in the state of oxides and the titanium in the state of titanate which can be extracted by washing with water, acids and bases. The titanium solution will then be precipitated by hydrolysis by the action of acids or bases.
After washing, filtration. high temperature desiccation and calcination at , an anhydrous product consisting of titanium oxide will be obtained which is treated with a reducing agent to obtain the titanium.
