Description

Process for the production of a resin similar to natural shellac. As we have shown earlier, it is possible to obtain high-quality resins from aldehydes. They can be processed in the same way as, for example, copals into oil varnishes, benzene varnishes, etc., like shellac, they can be used for insulating purposes, for sealing wax production, etc. and give high-quality,

Polishing and matting agents on a par with natural shellac solutions. What clearly distinguishes it from natural shellac in terms of its properties is its insolubility in aqueous borax and soda solutions. It is precisely the solubility in these agents that is particularly characteristic of natural shellac and it is precisely this property that enables it to be used extensively for finishes, etc., which was previously closed to aldehyde resins.

We have now made the surprising finding that one can arrive at a resin similar to natural shellac, which also has the characteristic solubility of natural shellac if aldehyde resins are subjected to an oxidizing treatment.

The aldehyde resins can be subjected to the oxidizing treatment in the molten state or expediently dissolved in a suitable liquid or, if appropriate, also suspended. The oxidation process can be promoted by catalysts. Another beneficial effect of the oxidizing treatment is bleaching and hardening of the resin.

The resin obtained by the process is a high-quality substitute for copals, amber, etc. and is soluble in aqueous borax and soda solutions just like natural shellac and can be used for the production of finishing agents, cold polishing inks and other uses of natural shellac will.

It also dissolves in the known resin solvents, in particular when heated with 01 smooth there are oil varnishes, which are characterized by the high gloss of the spreads, their color-compatible character, high resistance, etc. The new resin can also be used can be hardened simply by heating. Example1: 10 parts of aldehyde resin are dissolved in 100 parts of glacial acetic acid and ozonated oxygen is passed through this solution for a long time. The solution, which was originally dark in color, turns light. The dissolved resin is precipitated by adding water.

Example 2 In a solution of 20 parts of aldehyde resin in 100 parts of glacial acetic acid, to which 0.02 part of manganese acetate has been added, is shaken. Oxygen was introduced for several hours. The dissolved resin is precipitated by adding water. Example3: In a suspension of 10 parts of aldehyde resin in 50 parts of water, after the addition of 0.01 g permanganate oxygen introduced for a long time. The product obtained is separated from the water and can, as stated above, be processed further.
