Description

High speed centrifugal mill. The present invention relates to a high speed centrifugal crusher of the type in which a horizontal disc furnished with pins arranged in concentric annular rows can perform a horizontal rotary movement facing another horizontal disc whose pins arranged in the same way. way are inserted between the pins of the first disc.

Known crushers of this kind had their discharge orifice arranged tangentially to a certain part of their periphery and the material which was to be crushed was introduced through a hopper disposed above the hub of the fixed upper disc and was thrown through. the pins towards the periphery of the discs by the centri fuge force. In other mills a strong current of air was used to direct the ground material into the discharge port. With this arrangement, success has been achieved in the case of materials in the form of a dry powder or of a granular nature; but in the case of viscous and oily matter the crusher was soon clogged and the evacuation hampered.

The mill according to the present invention has an annular discharge orifice which extends in a horizontal plane over most of the periphery of the discs so that the treated material is discharged virtually unobstructed all over said periphery.

To collect the material evacuated by the annular orifice, the mill can be surrounded by a receiving chamber. However, the spacing between the walls of the mill and that of this chamber must be large enough to prevent any clogging of the orifice by materials accumulated on the walls of the chamber. It is advantageous to arrange the discharge orifice as completely as possible around the entire periphery; but it has been found that, when the upper disc is fixed, the discharge is not significantly hampered by a few fixing lugs between this disc and the lower body of the crusher. It has been found that moist, oily or viscous materials are easily transported into said chamber without there being a tendency to clog the mill.

We have , had good results with materials of # all kinds, whether the grinding is done in a dry or wet state. There is. an advantage in the fact that with the free evacuation all around, it is possible to dispose the. outer row of pins of the upper disc, fixed, as the outer row of the crusher. With another construction of a crusher one would not dare to do so without the risk of a flooding. It has been found that with the mill according to the present invention, one single step is sufficient to reduce the material to a greater fineness than that, is not possible with any other kind of mill and that. without appreciable increase in the. motor force.

The air current produced by the. rotation of the rotating disc may be strong enough to flush material through the far row of the fixed pins without fail, and the air flow is intensified if the arrangement of the discs is such that their spacing decreases towards the periphery.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.

The. Fi-. 1 is a front view and a partial section according to. line 1 - 1 key in fig. 3 a crusher fitted with an evacuation chamber; Fig. 2 is a side elevation and a partial section taken on line 2-2 of the. fig. 3, La. Fi-. 3, a plan with partial tearing; The fi-. 4 shows half in elevation, half in section, the mill without an evacuation chamber, and La. 5 is a partial plan of this crusher.

The frame of the crusher forms a casing 4 which protects the motor mechanism and which carries, fixed by bolts 27, a plate 26, the outer edge of which forms a ring 28 which presents the discharge orifice of the crusher. The lower and rotating spindle disc 29 is mounted on a vertical axis 25 which rotates in a ball bearing in the plate 26 and the upper and fixed spindle disc 30 is carried by four tabs 31 provided on the ring 28 and is there. fixed by screws 32. The fixed upper disc 30 is provided with concentric rows of vertical pins and the rotating lower disc 29 carries similar pins but arranged so as to be inserted between the pins of the upper disc.

A row of pins 33 of the fixed upper disc constitutes the extreme row placed outside the pins of the lower disc 29. This additional row 33 contributes to reducing the material by a single pass through to the mill without risk of. engorgement and without requiring a significant increase in driving force, to. greater finesse than by several passes through crushers without this row. The air flow produced by the rotating lower disc is always strong enough to force the materials through the fixed outer row 33 regardless of the nature of the materials.

A feed hopper 19 is disposed above the center of the upper disc and directs the material onto the surface of the rotating disc 29. With the arrangement described, so to speak the entire circumference of the ring 28 is available for the operation. 'evacuation of materials, then that the legs 31 are quite narrow and do not form any obstacle where the materials could accumulate and hinder the evacuation. Most of the discharge port is open and material can leave the spinning disc circle without finding any obstacles.

The discharge opening of the mill is turned by an annular chamber 5 which receives the evacuated products; a scraper 6 moves inside the chamber 5, all around the latter, to unload the products to. through the orifice I of an evacuation duct 8; this conduit ends at the lower end of an elevator 9 which conveys the products to any desired point in the plant. The scraper 6 is controlled by the motor shaft 10 by means of pulley keys 11 and 12 and of the belt 13. the pulley 12 being wedged on a shaft 14 which carries a screw 15.

This screw in turn controls the helical wheel 16 integral with a sleeve 17 supported by the cover 24 of the chamber 5 as well as by the cover 18 of the crusher and able to turn on said parts; the sleeve 17 carries the scraper 6. The feed hopper 19 of the crusher communicates with the interior of the latter by means of a tubular part 20 passing inside the rotating sleeve 17 and into the central opening cover 1ô. The cover of the chamber 5 is pierced with an opening communicating said chamber, by means of a pipe 21, with a dust collector 22.

The chamber 5 comprises a double casing 23 providing a steam circulation chamber, a circulation chamber which is used when the products must be kept in a hot state during the treatment and during their evacuation.

In the manufacture of margarine, cocoa butter and other edible fats or used in. confectionery, the solid fatty substance, which it is a question of bringing to, the state of division, can be brought to the feed hopper of the grinder by means of a screw or any other similar device discharging the material into said hopper. When you want to mix two or more different greases, they can be brought separately into the hopper by means of separate feed screws, the proportions in the mixture being determined by the flow rates supplied by the various screws according to the speed at which they are rotated.

If we want to circulate the fatty substances several times through the grinder, in order to make their mixture more intimate, we can operate as follows; if the grease is kept fluid, it can be collected in the exhaust duct by. a rotary pump, for example, which pushes it back into a container located at a high level, from which the grease falls back into the feed hopper of the grinder. This can be done after a certain amount of the fat has. processed once in the mill and allowed to collect in a tank. When it has been passed through the mill the desired number of times, the fatty substance can be poured into frames or molds in which it is allowed to solidify.

If two receiving tanks are used, the fatty substance can be brought into one of these tanks after its first passage through the grinder, the arrival of fresh fat being interrupted while the load is circulated through the grinder. through the grinder by means of the pump. When this charge has been sufficiently treated, the crusher can receive a new charge and the product obtained is conveyed into a second tank, while the product received in the first tank is made to solidify or is subjected to everything. other desired further processing.

The grinder may not have a rotating blade, however if it is not warmed up and the grease therefore remains in a solid state, the annular discharge chamber preferably has scrapers such as 6 working inside said chamber to unload the solid product divided in the duct S and in the elevator 9, the latter finally rowing the material to. the feed hopper of the same crusher, unless said material is reserved for further processing, if necessary.

In the. production of chocolate, cocoa and sugar can be brought together or separately into the hopper, these substances coming from conveyors or containers located at a high level, while the fat, cocoa butter, for example, to mix can be brought, either in the liquid state after melting, or by means of a feed screw which brings clans the hopper, to. speed appreciably uniform, the fatty substance in small fragments.

The machine can be maintained at the desired temperature so that the fatty substance remains in the molten state, the heating being ensured, for example, by means of a circulation chamber -de vapor-3ur or coils traversed by the steam. steam and the product supplied by the machine can be driven by a pump into the feed hopper, as described previously, when it is desired to pass it a number of times through the mill. The finished product obtained by this treatment is a perfectly mixed and soft chocolate, suitable for the preparation of chocolate confectionery products of the. finest quality.

With this device, mixers, refiners and other devices become unnecessary since the entire production of chocolate can be done in a single grinder or in a series of similar grinders of the aforementioned type. If the device is not heated, and if the fatty substance is brought to. the solid state, the mill divides said fatty substance and mixes it intimately with cocoa and sugar, so as to give a pulverized mixture which can be melted and subsequently processed in refiners or other devices. It is also possible to prepare the dry mixture first, then to melt the product and introduce it, to complete the treatment in a second disc mill equipped with spindles, which is heated.

In the manufacture of products such as baked preparations in which a fatty substance is incorporated into a pulverulent substance such as flour, the working process is the same as that which has just been described for the preparation of chocolate. , with the difference, however, that the product obtained is always in the solid state and finely divided. In any case, the product can be made several times through the same grinder or through a series of successive grinders, in a large factory, the final product being a perfectly intimate mixture of all the ingredients, a mixture occurring in the state of fine division.

The better operation of this mill with a discharge port open over the entire , circumference compared to that of a mill with a localized and tangent orifice can be explained as follows: In the mill of this the latter kind much of the energy is wasted and the pins of the outer rows are unnecessarily worn by the materials which are forced here and there by the rotating disc before they can escape through the localized orifice. By a discharge port like that of the present apparatus on the other hand, centrifugal force is better utilized to direct the material through the mill and no accumulation of the reduced material is to be feared.

The air stream produced by the rotating disc can escape more easily by passing the reduced material.

Experiments have shown that with the old system of mills a lot of material which the mill according to this invention can very well reduce could not be processed. For example, chocolate and the like, which are slightly damp, oily or viscous and which easily clog the old grinder can be safely worked with the new grinder.

Among the materials that can be reduced with the new grinder we can cite seeds containing oil, pods of all kinds, pigments either in dry state, or mixed with liquid and solid or semi-solid fats. The crusher is also used for. mix substances of all kinds. For example. an oleaginous material can be disintegrated and so mixed with a relatively dry and lousy material that the powdery material becomes soaked or coated with the oleaginous material and a homogeneous product results. The crusher can also pulverize materials of bituminous nature to such a fineness that they mix intimately with water and other liquids and then form stable emulsions.

Another use of this pitcher is to separate the husk from grain and seed. The fact that centrifugal force is suitable so well for driving material out. through the pins of the crusher to prepare intimate mixtures of dry materials, or wet halves, or to grind materials in a wet state, allows materials to be forced through the crusher under pressure conditions which cannot be get nowhere else. Relatively thick and viscous substances and mixtures can be forced through this mill and when wet milled this mill can handle much higher concentrations of solids or semi-solids than any other mill which does not. is not centrifugal.

The grinders according to the present invention can reach speeds measured at the circle of the rotating disc up to 6000 m and at this relative speed between the fixed and mobile spindles the centrifugal effect and the grinding effect is so intense that results are obtained which have not been obtained with any other known crusher. Chemical reactions which heretofore required lengthy processes either by heat or by manipulation of any kind can be caused almost instantaneously by a single pass through this mill.

The container which surrounds the grinder at the height of the orifice and at a suitable distance and which receives the treated materials, may have a shape other than that shown in the drawing.
