Description
methods of preventing aging and preserving vaccines from bacteria. The aqueous suspensions of bacteria used as vaccines have the disadvantage that the bacteria gradually dissolve, as a result of which the vaccine loses its effectiveness. One speaks of aging of the vaccine.
The important observation has now been made that such a dissolution of the bacteria does not take place, thus preventing the vaccine from aging and at the same time preserving the vaccine if the bacteria are suspended in water, for example, which can be used as a vaccine a water-soluble hexamethylene tetramine preparation by adding, for example, hexamethylene tetramine or a hexamethylene tetramine salt or a complex compound of hexamethylene tetramine,
such as, for example, hexamethylene tetramine methyl iodide or compounds of hexamethylene tetramine with iodo- and chloroacetic acid amide, added to the finished suspension or the liquid in which the suspension takes place. The vaccines preserved in this way have a practically unlimited shelf life. The water in which the bacteria are suspended can also contain a water-soluble hexamethylene tetramine preparation.
Example: A suspension of gonococci in water that can be used as a vaccine is mixed with such an amount of a 40% solution of hexamethylenetetramine that the suspension afterwards contains the desired number of germs per cubic centimeter, for example 50 million or 100 million gonococci.
The procedure for preserving vaccines from other types of bacteria is analogous.
