Bow for musical instruments: The present invention a. for object a bow for musical instruments, such as violins, cellos, etc., distinguished by the fact that the means of connection between the horsehair lock and the bow rod are established so as to be able to yield elastically when the lock of horsehair is subjected to transverse pressure during the game. By this means, the timbre of the sound and the technique of the game are improved.

The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, embodiments of the object of the invention as necessary in order to make it understood.

In the example of fis. 1 to 5, the body of the rear bow designated by a is formed of ulcanite or other rigid material and provided with a groove b at the base of the body to fit on the rod of the bow, the body a being provided with a threaded sleeve c screwing onto the threaded adjustment rod (not shown) housed inside the rod. Recesses d are made in the body a of the haussa to receive the node e at the rear end of the. lock of horsehair.

The top face and the rear face of the body a are covered by a metal leaf spring driven in the shape of <B> L </B> and having at its anterior end an annular part g in the shape of <B> D < / B> lying down. The leaf spring f has in the lower part of its vertical branch a slot k through which it passes over the threaded part of the.

set screw i, which, when tight, holds the leaf spring firm in place on the rear body. The node e of the horsehair lock is retained in one of the recesses d by means of a stopper plug j shown separately in FIGS. G and 7. The rear part of the horsehair lock is lobed in a longitudinal groove seen at the top of the body of the rear sight and is covered by a sliding part 1 presented separately in ss S and 9.

This Z-sliding piece can slide through the slides provided alongside the groove at the top of the body of the rear sight and is slightly raised at its front end to form a support for the leaf spring f, the adjustment in position of the part d thus making it possible to vary the useful length of the leaf spring f from the point of view of the degree of deflection thereof.

The hair strand passing through the <B> D </B> -shaped ring g is pressed against the flat top of the ring g by means of a clamping plate iii ,, con # 5tituazit part of a clamp and which is represented at the fis. 10.

The plaque. clamping w cst provided with a screw <B> le. </B> on which is mounted a nut o, which, when turned in the correct direction, causes the clamping plate or against the horsehair wick to rest for the. pinch between this and the flat top of the ring g.

The fixing of the mèelie of horsehair in one or the other of the recesses d of the body of the increase can also be obtained according to the variant of figs. \ _ '3 and \? - 1, by means of a good (, lion in the form of a ferrule iv' engaged with a sealed seal in this recess and holding the corresponding end of the hair strand.

On the other hand, the. gripper plate for the horsehair lock can also be trusted. 21 and \? \ ?, where it is extended by a flexible tab v1 serving as additional elastic support to the. lock of horsehair when it is subjected to transverse pressure.

Figs. 11. and 12 show a clamp for holding the hair strand at the head of the bow. > <Tue small metal plate p has a hole. At the edge of which is connected a small tul), ulure q threaded externally. A screen r is mounted on the latter.

For assembly, the hair strand is first passed through the hole in the plate p and is glued to the interior of the tubing q. Then, the plate p thus prepared is inserted into the cavity provided for this purpose in the head of the bow (fis. 12), and is fixed there by turning the nut r which makes the plate q press towards the posterior wall. of said cavity.

In the. execution form of fis. <B> 13 </B> to 1.8, la. increase has a lower section t mounted on the rod and an upper section if hinged to. section t. The lower section t has a lower groove r and a threaded sleeve w connecting to the.

threaded rod of the rod. A vertical metal plate .r is fixed in ri to 1-i section t and protrudes at the top to the level of the top of the increase. The.

upper section as is articulated in z to the vertical plate <I> x, </I> so that the axis of articulation is in the extension of the plane of the horsehair lock, a metal block ct 'being inserted in the upper section u to form a hinge with the plate x.

A coil spring b '(fig. 14) is inserted into a housing at the rear of the upper section u and bears against the vertical plate x in order to keep the upper section u in the raised position or away from the lower section. t.

A projection e '' provided at the base of the upper section u engages in a corresponding cavity: d 'provided in the lower section in order to prevent any lateral displacement between the sections t zt. The upper part of the section- u has a groove e 'from which descends teeth -three recesses <B> f </B>.

The naaud at the posterior end of the horsehair lock is introduced into one or the other of the recesses f 'and is retained there by a metal plug-stopper j, such as that shown in fig. 6 and 7, but one could also use the method of fixing described above with reference to FIGS. 23 and 24.

The groove e 'at the top of the upper section 2t is covered by a cover 7c', the front end of which carries a ring l 'in the form of <B> D </B> through which the hair strand passes. A ms screw is used to fix the ring and the cover in position on the. upper section u. A wedge W is inserted under the hair strand! To spread it out and secure it in position. A screw o 'passes through a widening <I> p' </I> opening of the lower section <I> t </I> of the rear sight. and screws into the top section of it.

On this screw o 'is mounted an adjustable knurled nut q' between the upper and lower sections. The position of this nut q 'on the screw o' determines the position at which the upper section can be lowered towards the lower section by a transverse pressure exerted on the horsehair lock during the game. the screw o 'with the bottom of the widening t' limits the degree of separation of the two sections of the rise, said head -forming thus stopper. Figs. 19 and 20 show a form of horsehair lock clip at the head of the bow, which can be applied instead of that of Figs. 11 and 12.

A small metal plate r has a slot in the form of a keyhole s' in which the horsehair lock is introduced, this slot then being closed in order to retain the latter. A screw t 'protrudes from this plate and carries a nut u'. The plate with the adjoining parts is introduced into a cavity made in the head of the bow (fig. 20) and is locked there by turning the nut u 'which thus forces the plate r' to be pressed against the wall. adjacent to said cavity.

It can be seen that in the embodiments described, when a transverse pressure is exerted on the horsehair lock, this pressure is resiliently supported in the rise of the bow, or by the leaf spring f (fig. 2) forming part of the means serving to connect the horsehair lock with the rear sight, either by the elastic mounting of the raising section it (fig. 14), the connecting means between the horsehair lock and the rod thus being able to yield elastically in the transverse direction to the lock of horsehair.
