Description
A method of making porous bodies of electrodes in batteries and electrolysers liquid tight. The present patent relates to a process for making the porous bodies of the electrodes of certain types of batteries, as well as those of certain electrolysers, in order to keep these bodies their properties of permeability to gases, or absorption of these gases, and to give them or maintain good electrical conductivity.
This process is characterized by the formation, on the porous body, of a loidal neck film coated with soap, which film is not decomposable by electric current, a good conductor of electricity, impermeable to liquids and permeable to water. gas.
By way of example, this soap can be obtained as follows in one liter of water; preferably boiling, 100 grams of Marseille soap are dissolved, then this dissolution is mixed cold with a solution of zinc chloride measuring approximately 400 Baumé. Or thus obtains a precipitate of zinc soap. This precipitate, collected after filtration, is spread by means of a spatula, for example, on the porous body, and thus forms on the latter a pectized colloidal film, constituting a protective coating which is at the same time: insoluble -in the 'water-tight, liquid-tight, gas-permeable, non-decomposable by electric current and a good electric conductor.
This coating, applicable in particular on the depolarizing porous carbon of the positive electrode. Of certain types of batteries, protects this porous carbon against the access of water from the electrolyte while maintaining the internal resistance of the battery as low as possible due to the excessively thin thickness of this pectized colloidal film and its electrical conductivity.
The pectised soap colloid can also be formed by immersing the porous body under the following conditions: The porous body is first immersed in the Marseille soap solution, preferably boiling; this immersion must be carried out quickly so that the humidity does not have time to penetrate into the mass; after this immersion, this porous body is left to dry for a few moments, then is immersed in the solution of the metal salt, for example of zinc chloride.
By the reaction of zinc chloride on the soap, it forms, in the pores of the peripheral part of the porous body, zinc soap, which is, under these conditions, protected against external shocks, scratches, and ensures thus a waterproofing by made opposing any penetration of liquid into the mass of the porous body.
