Description

Electroscope.

Electroscope. The present invention relates to an electoscope of small dimensions and easily transportable.

According to the invention, the electric charge of the electroscope is generated using a brush, to which oscillatory movements are communicated with the aim of forcing it to rub alternately, in opposite directions, against a metallic body whose surface is coated. of an insulating material and mounted on a plate to which is fixed, by one of its ends, a metal sheet capable of moving as soon as an electric charge is applied to it.

The invention is shown in one of its embodiments, given by way of example only, and in section along a median vertical plane, in the accompanying drawing.

The electroscope comprises a small vertical plate 1, on one side of which is applied, at 2, the metal foil 3, while, on the opposite side is fixed, at 4, a metal ball 5 whose surface is coated with a suitable insulator, eg shellac. On a pivot 7, supported in the box 16 of the device, is mounted so as to be able to oscillate, an angled lever 6, 10, on the hub of which is fixed a brush 8 which can go to rub the ball 5 when the arm 6 of said lever extending outwardly through there is suitably moved, window 17 provided in the box 15 of the apparatus.

It is precisely this friction which produces the electric charge of the apparatus; a small number of strokes are sufficient for the ball 5 to be electrified as well as the sheet 3; the sheet then passes from the position marked in solid lines to a position analogous to that indicated in dotted lines.

Naturally, depending on the number of displacements printed by hand on the arm 6, the load can be adjusted and a more or less accentuated deviation of the sheet 3 can be obtained.

One end of a return spring 9 is anchored to the other arm 10 of said lever, the other end of which is fixed at 11 to the box, this spring serving to return the arm 10 to its rest position. when the manual action on the arm 6 ceases. Opposite the sheet 3, is placed, in the usual way, the plate 12 serving to clamp and protect the gold or metal sheet and which is can slide forwards or backwards keeping it always parallel to the plate 1 and this, by my noeuvrant the button 18 of the rod 19 on which the plate 12 is mounted.

The face of the plate 12, located vis-à-vis the sheet 3, may optionally be covered with a layer of insulating varnish 16, so that, when the sheet 3 is loaded, the plate 12 being separated, if the sheet manages to reach this plate 12 (which is obtained by giving the electroscope a sufficiently intense load) remains adherent thereto and remains in this position until the discharge of the 'electroscope. The apparatus is completed by a rod 20 terminating at its upper part in an operating button 14 and rotating in a socket 21; the lower end of the rod 20 supports the plate 1 so as to allow the latter to be rotated when it is desired, for example, to inspect the sheet 3.
