Description

Synthetic emerald manufacturing process. The present invention relates to a process for obtaining synthetic emerald which, suitably cut and polished, imitates natural emerald.

According to this process, a mixture of silica, crushed or pulverized, is melted with a material suitable for giving the product the color of emerald, hydrated or anhydrous glucine, also hydrated or anhydrous alumina and fluxes; this melting can be done for example in an oxyhydrogen, oxyacetylene or electric furnace. The material obtained is then broken up and the fragments again heated so as to soften them, and then subjected to kneading.

Example: Ninety grams of rock crystal are taken and heated almost to red, and suddenly cooled by immersing them in cold water , so that in this way it is more brittle, and then we triturate and pulverize.

To the rock crystal thus pulverized is added an aqueous solution containing fifty percent copper nitrate and a lesser quantity of uranium nitrate. This composition can be more or less concentrated or be used in greater or lesser amount, depending on the intensity of coloring that is desired.

Twenty grams of hydrated alumina, twenty grams of hydrated or anhydrous glucine and, as fluxes, are mixed with the aforementioned rock crystal: thirty grams of lithium carbonate or causative lithium; fifteen grams of molten boric acid, powder; and four grams of soda ash, melted and pulverized.

The mixture thus prepared is melted in a crucible, in an oxyhydrogen or electric furnace at a temperature of one thousand six hundred to one thousand nine hundred degrees centigrade.

The fusion product is divided into pieces and these are again subjected to the action of heat until a degree of softening or softness is obtained which allows these pieces to be kneaded to give rise to the mixture. formation of new parts of the product. This is done using pliers or other suitable tools. The effect of this new softening of the product is that it acquires a peculiar appearance which makes it incomparably more precious and more similar to natural emerald.

It removes from the product of fusion the character known by the name of hard mass, that is to say the glassy appearance; in addition, the product small gains in hardness and shine. This operation can even be repeated several times.

This product, when treated lapidarily by cutting and polishing, acquires an identical appearance to that. des eniera.tides (the natural origin.
