Description

  La     fig.    1 est une vue en élévation de       face    d'une paire de cylindres coopérants pour  laminer les disques d'épaisseur variable;  La     fig.    2 est une coupe verticale suivant  la ligne 2-2 de la     fig.    1, montrant les cy  lindres dans . la position qu'ils occupent  quand les faces de travail commencent à  serrer les flans;  La     fig.    3 est une vue de détail, avec  coupe suivant la ligne 3-3 de la     fig.    1,  montrant un dispositif qui maintient en place  les blocs encastrés dans les cylindres;  La     fig.    4 est une coupe transversale du  bloc rapporté suivant la ligne 4-4 de la       fig.    1;

    La     fig.    5 est une coupe transversale du  bloc rapporté suivant la ligne 5-5 de la       fig.    1; .      La     fig.    6 est une coupe longitudinale  du bloc rapporté suivant la ligne 6-6 de la       fig.    1;  La     fig    7 est une vue en plan de l'un des  flans dont on tire, par laminage, des dis  ques d'épaisseur variable;  La     fig.    8 est une vue en plan représen  tant le flan à la fin de la première passe;  La,     fig.    9 est une coupe suivant la ligne  9-9 de la     fig.    8 d'une paire de     flans    à. la  fin de la première passe;

A method and apparatus for the manufacture of metal discs gradually decreasing in thickness from the center to the periphery. The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the manufacture of discs gradually decreasing in thickness from the center to the periphery.

The method according to the invention consists in bringing together several substantially square blanks face to face, in simultaneously rolling the blanks thus joined successively in radial directions from the centers to the peripheries of said blanks, then in separating the laminated blanks.

The apparatus for carrying out this process comprises a rolling roll arranged to cooperate with another rolling roll, each of these rolling rolls being provided with a recessed block fixed to it and having a triangular working face.

The method and apparatus according to the invention make it possible to obtain more quickly and more cheaply disks of variable thickness as defined above, the simultaneous rolling of a certain number of blanks. making it possible to reduce handling, increase the speed of manufacture and reduce the cost price of the discs.

In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention making it possible to obtain disks of variable thickness.

Like numbers denote the same parts in the different figures of the drawing and the sections are made looking in the direction of the arrows placed at the ends of the section lines.

The apparatus shown comprises a rolling cylinder for disks of varying thickness, in the body of which is embedded and rigidly fixed a block having a working face which presses the blank and forces the metal of the latter to be placed so that the blank gradually tapers towards its edges and its outline takes a shape similar to that of a circle. It has been found desirable to use a hardened recessed block made, for example, of hardened cast iron; in fact, the built-in unit is required to exert a considerable pressure during the operation of the apparatus, which this improvement enables it to withstand more successfully.

This recessed block has a working face which closely resembles that which was formed on the cylinder in known machines of this kind. However, it has been observed that with the working face of these machines, slight radial ridges are formed in the discs; the removal of these edges can be obtained here by giving a slight concavity to the triangular key work face, so that the parts of this face located along the center line defined by the intersection of 'a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder with said working face are closer to the axis of the cylinder than the lateral parts of this same working face. In other words, the central parts of the working face are ground so as to be slightly below the side parts.

The cylinder is lined with a pair of collars, and the cylinder body, which is located between these collars and which receives the flush mount. is eccentric with respect to the axis of the cylinder. Normally, the collars of the respective rolls of the rolling mill roll over one another and the eccentricity of the bodies of the rolls leaves between them a space in which the blanks can be engaged at certain times of the revolution of the rolls.

When rotating the cylinders, the working faces of the recessed blocks bite on the blanks which have been thus engaged between the cylinders and separate the cylinders so that the collars are spread apart from one of the cylinders. other and that the pressure is transmitted from one cylinder to the other by the working faces by crossing the blanks between them. The shape of these. working faces and the pressure (the rolling thus exerted on the blanks causes a spreading of the metal which gives the outline of each blank a substantially circular shape and reduces the thickness of the outer parts of the blank.

To achieve this reduction in the thickness of the blanks, the working faces are eccentric, in other words, the distance which separates the triangular working face from the axis of the cylinder increases from the top of this face to its base.

The method further consists of taking a number of square blanks of uniform cross section united; to form what we can call a game of blanks and to put said game to. a series of rolling operations carried out in a number of different directions between the shaped rolls; these operations result in forcing the contours of the blanks because res to take a substantially circular shape and to give the blanks, outwardly, a uniform and symmetrical reduction in thickness with respect to their centers. The blanks are preferably heated to dark red before being subjected to the rolling operation.

The apparatus shown is a minoir comprising two cylinders of identical construction such as those described above, each of said cylinders having a concave and triangular eccentric working surface. If it is proposed to laminate two or more blanks simultaneously by means of this apparatus, a clearance of two or more blanks is pledged between the rolls, so that the working faces of the roll act on the opposite faces of the roll. game in question by thinning all the blanks at the same time from the center to the periphery. These blanks can then be separated and completed.

The cooperating rolls are mounted in a frame and driven, and the upper roll is subjected to pressure, all in accordance with the practice adopted in the rolling industry.

In the drawing, there is shown the rolling mill rolls 10, each of which has a body 12 eccentric relative to the axis of the roll and cylindrical collars 11 placed at the end of said body. These rolls are mounted in a frame and driven and pressure applied to them in accordance with the manner adopted in rolling practice (these details are not shown). The body 12 of each cylinder has a hollow 13 in which is rigidly fixed a recessed block 14. In this particular case, this recessed block is held in place by blocks 15 which protrude onto the block and are fixed to the body 12 of the cylinder. cylinder by bolts 16. A part of each of these recessed blocks protrudes so as to form a working face in front of the body 12 of the cylinder.

These embedded blocks are preferably made of hardened cast iron, so as to be able to successfully resist the very great pressure exerted on them during their operation. The working face of the recessed block comprises, on the one hand, the som met 17 which is arranged so as to bite on the central parts of the blank and to grip it firmly as soon as it is engaged between the cylinders and, of on the other hand, a central part 18 which is substantially triangular or in the form of a sector (this is the part limited by the dashed lines in FIG. 1). This part 18 is slightly concave as will be explained more fully below; she is .

surrounded by bevelled edges 19 and 20, as can be seen in FIGS. 1, 4 and 5. The bevelled parts 19 and 20 reduce the compression in the vicinity of the edges of the surfaces on which an acts and help to remove the edges at this right as clearly shown in FIG. 2. The block 14 is embedded in the body 12 of the cylinder so that its working face protrudes slightly from the cylindrical surface forming the outline of the two collars at the ends of the cylinder.

In addition, the recessed block 14 is placed in the cylinder so that its working face is eccentric with respect to the axis of the cylinder and that the distance which separates this axis from the working face increases from the region 17 to the beginning of the bevelled part 20. The recessed block is angled at 22 on the front edge of the top 17 and a central notch -21 is provided to receive the end of the pliers from which -on is is used to engage the blanks between the cylinders. The bevels 22 remove from the recessed block all the sharp-angled corners which could catch the clamps when the latter are removed.

As indicated above, the sector-shaped portion 18 of the face of. triangular work has a slight concavity with respect to an axis directed transversely with respect to the axis of the cylinder.

In fig. 4 and 5, this concavity is measured by the distance between the upper surface of part 18 and the straight line C-C. The two views of fig. 4 and 5 are somewhat schematic, the concavity having been somewhat exaggerated so as to be made more apparent. Theoretically, the working face of the embedded block should form the complement of a sector of the disc of variable thickness so that if said sector were applied to the.

working surface so as to envelop the latter, the outer surface of the sector would itself be cylindrical and would have the same axis as the cylinder. The disc is thinned symmetrically around its center so that at all its points located at equal radial distances from the center, the thickness of the di> - is the same and this thickness decreases uniformly from the center to the peri pheria along each ray. In order for the shape of the working face to exactly match a sector of the completed disc, all points on the working face located at equal distances from the apex of that face should be equidistant from the axis of the cylinder.

The invention consists in achieving this condition ap proximately in the working face. In the cylinder used in the old machine, this condition was not exactly fulfilled, because all the points of a line determined by the intersection of a radial plane containing the axis of the cylinder with the working face were located at equal distance from the axis of the cylinder. Consequently, in this old arrangement of the cylinder, the central parts of the. working face were further from the axis of the cylinder than they should have been to be exactly complementary to a sector of the disc of variable thickness.

We approached the theoretical shape of the working face by grinding the central part 18 of the latter as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. In fig. 13, there is shown, in plan, a finished variable thickness dis that, and the lines XZX and XYX of this figure will help to understand the formation of the working face. As the disc is symmetrically thinned, the thickness of the disc is the same at all points along the arc XYX, and the disc is thinner at point X than at point Z and if we follow the line XZX, the thickness of the disc increases from X to. Z to decrease from Z to X.

Block 14 first receives a triangular working face in the shape of a portion of the cylindrical face. The block is placed in the body 12 of the cylinder so that the axis of this cylindrical surface is outside the axis of the cylinder, so that the cylindrical surface is eccentric with respect to the axis of the cylinder. .

However, before the block is placed in the cylinder, this partially cylindrical surface is ground so as to. become slightly concave as shown in fig. 4 and 5, the surface 18 parting inwards towards the center line, which corresponds to the cutting line 2-2, to then slope outwards from this line towards the edge of the part 18.

At point D (fig. 4), the distance separating the: line CC from the working face is equal to the difference between the thicknesses of the disc at points Y and Z (fig. 13), assuming that the line XZX either at a distance from the center of the disc corresponding to the distance which separates the cut line 4-4 from the apex of the triangular working face (fig. 1); likewise the distance between line C-C and face 18 at point E (fig. 4) is equal to the difference between the thickness of the disc in Z 'and Y (fig. 13).

Likewise, the distance between the. line CC and face 18 at point I '(fig. 5) is equal to the difference between the thicknesses of the disc at points T and S (fig. 13), assuming that line RTR corresponds to cut line 5 -5 of fig. 1. The above examples clearly show the formation of part 1.8 of the working face. However, the invention is in no way limited to the formation of a working face exactly in accordance with the theory.

In practice, it is believed that the best results will be obtained by means of rolls having working faces exhibiting a slightly lower concavity than that indicated above; such an organization would, of course, come within the scope of the invention.

Suitable cams 23 may be rigidly fixed in the collars 11 so as to act on each other, when the collar rotates, to relieve the pressure on the blanks as they exit from the cylinders.

Figs. 7 to 13 inclusive represent the blanks at the various stages of their manufacture. The blank 24 which is shown in FIG. 7 is a square blank of uniform thickness. This blank is pierced with a central hole 25 for the convenience of its operation. Two of these blanks 2, 4, preferably heated to dark red, are placed on top of each other so as to form what may be called a set of blanks, and are picked up by a suitable instrument. , such as the clamps 30, which can be provided with a finger passing through the holes 25.

When the cylinders occupy the position for which the recessed blocks are located on the opposite sides of the cylinders, the eccentricity of the cylinder bodies leaves between them a space in which the worker engages the two blanks as shown in fig. 2. When the cylinders turn in the direction indicated by the arrows in fig. 2, the recessed blocks come, by rotating, one opposite the other and the parts 17 of the working faces of these blocks grip the central parts of the blanks located around the holes 25.

As the rolls continue to rotate, the triangular working faces 18 compress the blanks and at the same time force them out of the rolls. The result of this operation is that the two blanks receive approximately the shape shown on the line & which shows one of the sides of the blank transformed by rolling into a sector 26. The blanks, still held by means of the grippers, receive a rotational movement of 180, then are again engaged between the rolls so that the working faces act. once more on the blanks by rolling the opposite ends of the blanks along sector 2-7.

The blanks are then rotated by 90 and they are rolled from the center outwards to form the thinned sector 29. It can be seen that these different passes of the blanks between the cylinders force the contours of the blanks to take an approximately shape. circular and that the blanks are thinned uniformly and symmetrically with respect to the center. Game discs can now be separated and trimmed.

The excess metal which has been spread on one side to produce the difference in thickness is moved to the periphery of the blank and gives the latter a roughly circular shape so that the amount of metal which remains to remove to complete the disc is much less important than in the case where one must cut a circular disc in a square. It follows from the foregoing that the process described here for forming a disc tapering towards the edges results in a considerable saving of metal.

In. using the apparatus described to obtain by rolling discs going thinning outwards, it is possible to increase the speed of manufacture of these discs and to reduce their cost price provided that it is possible to roll two blanks at a time. In addition, this device is not as expensive to build as older machines because the working faces which must be precisely and carefully formed are provided on inserts which can be separated from the cylinders and are rigidly fixed in place. on these.

This device also makes it possible to use hardened recessed blocks which successfully withstand the high pressures involved. The arrangement of the cylinders comprising collars and an eccentric cylinder body facilitates the supply of the blanks to the cylinders and the assembly of the cylinders. parts reported in these latest. The use of recessed parts with convex triangular working faces, such as those described above, eliminates the radial ridges which hitherto formed in the discs during rolling and makes further laminating unnecessary. discs to complete these last.

The apparatus which has just been described makes it possible to obtain more perfect discs and to manufacture them more quickly than was possible with the old machines.

It can be seen that the process for the rolling of thinned discs outwardly, which was described above, makes the manufacture of these discs much more expeditious and much less expensive, provided that a set formed of several blanks is rolled at the same time. instead of undermining only one blank. The worker can thus, in a determined time, laminate a greater number of discs with a single machine with very perfect results.
