Description

Method of dressing seeds. Formaldehyde is recognized as having a good fungicidal dressing effect, but the damage caused to seeds by this substance is, as it is particularly evident from the work of Kiessling (Journal für Landwirtschaft, Volume 66, 1918) and Hurd (Journal of Agriculture, XX. 1920 ) were discovered, so large that today the formaldehyde is hardly used by progressive farmers for seed dressing.
It has now been found that this damage to the formaldehyde can be avoided by adding hydrochloric acid to it. This brings about complete evaporation of the formaldehyde from the seed and thus eliminates the source of damage.
The complete evaporation of the formaldehyde is due to the fact that it does not polymerize when it evaporates within a mixture with hydrochloric acid. However, as Müller and Molz (Fühlings agricultural newspaper 1914, pages 742 to 752) and later Hurd (Journal of Agriculture 1920, page 209) found out, only the polymerisation products of formaldehyde have adverse effects on the seeds.
You can add any other fungicides to such preparations, for example mercury chloride or inert fillers.
