Device for checking the condition of electrical insulator elements and electrical installations, when the latter are in service. The present invention relates to devices making it possible to check the condition of elements of electrical insulators and electrical installations, when the latter are in service, without risking causing short circuits or causing injury. the operator. It relates in particular to devices used to detect faults exhibited by insulators of the suspended type and of the pin type, insulators which are in service at the time of the verification, also to locate faults in overhead cables. and underground, the panels of distribution boards, etc.
An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a complete live line test rod, which rod is ready for operation to check insulators, sockets and windings; Fig. 2 is an elevation, taken on a larger scale, of everything in. the inside of the sleeve; Fig. 3 is a diagram showing the connections of the verification apparatus comprising an ordinary radioelectric tube, which may be of the type with two, three or four electrodes, with the usual connections to these various tubes.
Fig. 1 shows that the device consists of a wooden cane 5 having undergone a special treatment and having, at one end, a metal fork 1 provided with a metal sleeve 3 allowing the fork to be fitted onto the end of the cane 5 ; in this sleeve 3 is formed a cavity 2 in which a. color-coated broom or the like intended to make a mark on defective elements as they are being traversed by current, thus using the cane instead of the hands.
The end of the rod 5 opposite the fork 1 is provided with a special, highly insulating member 22, made of bakelite and having sleeves in which one end of the rod 5 and a handle 25 engage so as to increase the safety with which the rod is handled when the latter is used in the case of high voltages. .itor 27 located in the circuit which comprises the second battery and the filament. The first battery is linked to the second battery and to one of the terminals of. the device 20, and this through one of the wires of the cable 18, while the other terminal of the device? 0 is joined by the other wire of the cable 18, to the plate of the radio tube electric.
To carry out a test on an insulator, windings or any other electrical device showing faults and placed under voltage, it is only necessary to energize the voltmeter by closing switch 27, then applying the fork to a determined point and by reading on the device 20 which. gives a direct indication of the value of the difference between the potential of the part which is in contact with the fork and that of the earth, where more exactly of the particles suspended in the air and surrounding the rod.
This reading is proportional to the insulating capacity at the particular point considered, a capacity which depends, of course, on the thickness of the insulating substance and the state of the latter which can be cracked, soiled, porous, wet, etc. .
By carrying out similar tests at various points on the insulator, rapid and accurate indications of the electrical conditions in which the insulator is found are without danger.
