Description

Process for the treatment of peat with a view to obtaining simultaneously soluble carbohydrates not intended for food and a combustible product. The present process is based on the finding that the 6.5-85% water peat moss, hot treated with acids, can be easily, for example by dewatering or by pressurized filtration, freed. most of the aqueous liquid which pervades it, unlike untreated peat. This property, due to the transformation during operation of the colloid products contained in the peat, also allows easy methodical washing of the treated peat.

According to this process, peat containing 65-85% water and 15-35% dry matter is added by spraying, in a laxor, concentrated sulfuric acid, for example in sufficient quantity so that the concentration of the liquid impregnating the peat is about 4% pure acid. The mass thus prepared is heated under pressure at 110 -120 for a period of time which depends on the origin of the peat. The liquid part is then separated from the mass, preferably still hot and by suction or by compression, and the solid part is then washed methodically. The liquids are then treated for the enhancement of the carbohydrates they contain.

After the last washing, the mass is compressed into briquettes with or without the addition of an agglomeration.

This process can be carried out in such a way as to achieve the following three conditions, necessary to ensure an economical application of the treatment of peat for obtaining soluble carbohydrates: 10 Obtaining solutions, sufficiently concentrated carbohydrates so as to avoid excessive evaporation costs if one wishes to obtain solid carbohydrates or costs of concentration of fermented solutions, if these carbohydrates are transformed by fermentation .

Use of an amount of acid which is sufficiently low relative to the carbohydrates produced, so as to reduce the acid expenditure.

30 Obtaining the residue of the acid treatment in the form of a fuel of more value than the peat itself, so as to add the benefit of the sale of this product to that of carbohydrates.
