Description

<I>A'</I> das Eis *von Zeit zu Zeit erneuert.

Process and device for monitoring the oxygen content in hydrogen and vice versa. It is well known that there are two methods for determining the oxygen content in hydrogen, or vice versa: One method is determined by combustion.

The second method takes the path of 'absorption of oxygen.

These testing procedures. are not only used in the laboratory, but also partly form the basis of automatic gas testers that have been designed to continuously monitor the purity of hydrogen or oxygen. However, none of these gas testers work sufficiently reliably and completely automatically.

The method according to the invention can now, in contrast to all the known devices on which it is based, actually be carried out completely independently, does not require any operation and nevertheless allows a reliable control of the degree of purity of the gases. It can be used to determine the oxygen content in the hydrogen and vice versa with an accuracy that is even greater than that which is averaged in the laboratory. the Hempel'schen Pi pette can be reached.

The invention consists in -that the admixture is given the opportunity to unite with the main gas, but not the volume change, but rather the thermal side of the process for monitoring the gas composition, so for example the temperature change -of the gas mixture to be examined observed respectively in a combustion chamber. measures, if necessary with help. of a recording instrument. In this combustion chamber, for example, palladium deposited on pottery shards or another contact substance that acts as intensively as possible can be introduced.

The invention is explained in more detail with the aid of the exemplary embodiment of the drawing, which shows a device useful for carrying out the method according to the invention in the diagram: In the drawing, T is a washing bottle with concentrated sulfuric acid or any other device for drying the gas mixture to be examined A vessel made of steel or other suitable material, for example 25 mm in diameter and 60 mm in height, in the upper part of which the mercury ball of a thermometer with finest graduation protrudes.

B is a vessel that is large and filled in the same way - like A, but which is provided with a heat-insulating layer and filled with a contact substance. The thermal insulation can, as the drawing shows, only be placed outside the vessel, or an insulating inner lining can also or finally be provided. At the same height as in vessel A, there is also the mercury ball of a second thermometer in vessel B, which is completely identical in design and dimensions to the thermometer immersed in vessel A. Both thermometers are calibrated against each other.

B is a rotary knife or other suitable gas measuring device which enables the amount of gas passing through the gas testing device to be measured with sufficient accuracy. With its help it is determined whether the apparatus. The amount of gas through which is required for the calibration of the device.

This device is expediently used as follows: The gas mixture to be examined is taken, for example, from a gas container that is sealed off from a liquid, or it is branched off from a gas flow to be monitored and let into the pipeline L via a. Valve V, which allows to adjust the amount of gas passing through the apparatus. Any small pressure fluctuations in the gas line have no noticeable effect on the test result.

If, however, significant fluctuations in the gas pressure occur in the operation in question, it is advisable to install some automatic compensation device in front of the apparatus, for example a pressure reducing valve, to keep the amount of gas flowing constant. However, since there are usually very small amounts of grass, around 25 to 100 liters per hour, the pressure equalization can be achieved with sufficient safety and reliability even by the simplest means.

The permitted gas now flows through the washing chamber or the drying element T and then one behind the other through containers A and B. Combustion takes place in container B, i.e. the addition of oxygen and hydrogen. Assuming that the hydrogen to be tested is absolutely pure, i.e. does not contain any oxygen impurities, there will be no combustion in vessel B and the display of the two thermometers immersed in chambers A and B must be absolutely the same.

However, there are only sensations of oxygen in the hydrogen respectively. of hydrogen in oxygen, 1.05 percent by volume, admixture of one gas to the other is sufficient, this creates a temperature increase in the chamber and a temperature difference is determined by reading on the two thermometers. This temperature difference becomes higher, the greater the content of the gas to be considered as impurity.

This difference can be determined theoretically and follows a law that can be specified in the form of an equation \, which can be represented graphically. The specification of this law is omitted here, however, since it is sufficient for practice to empirically determine the temperature differences for each apparatus, which are assigned to specific degrees of contamination, and compile them in a table that is attached to the apparatus.

In this way you are then able to determine at any moment by determining the temperature difference using the table, whether and what degree of contamination is present and thus, with a given volume, how large the oxygen or. Is hydrogen content.

Since the temperature difference depends on the degree of purity and the secondary flow rate only on the size of the chambers <I> A </I> and <I> B </I>, this applies to each individual device type if the flow rate is observed the table once made. But if you keep the chamber A. always at 0 degrees, for example by embedding it in ice, the percentage of the oxygen content in the hydrogen, or vice versa, can even be specified and read directly on the second thermometer instead of the temperature degrees.

A direct reading, without the aid of tables, is also possible if the gas, as shown in dashed lines, is fed to chamber B instead of through chamber A through a cooling coil g which is built into a container A 'filled with ice ; It is then advisable to arrange a control thermometer <I> T '</I> at the outlet point of the gas on the cooling coil K, which should show 0- when the device is in operation.

In all these cases of direct readings, the thermometer that protrudes into chamber B is expediently calibrated not in degrees of heat, but rather in percentages.

Of course you can. you can replace the mercury thermometer with other liquid thermometers. But you can also use thermocouples that are connected to galvanometers, which directly display the temperature differences and can also register them graphically. Since the electromotive forces, strictly speaking, depend not only on the temperature difference, but also on the values of the temperatures themselves, it is also useful here to keep the temperature of chamber A at 0 degrees by cooling with ice.

Using the method and using an apparatus according to the invention, it is particularly easy to carry out a hazard display as soon as the gas mixture approaches the explosion limit. With chamber A kept at 0 degrees, it is sufficient to arrange two fused platinum wires by means of the mercury thread of the thermometer in chamber B in such a place that the two electrodes are bridged by the silver thread when the = temperature in chamber B is a predetermined level exceeds, which can be chosen arbitrarily close to the temperature,

which corresponds to the explosion limit.

An automatic display of the danger or an automatic shutdown of the gas supply or gas generation can take place, for example, when a thermocouple is used, by attaching a contact to the galvanometer scale that comes into operation when the gas mixture approaches the explosion limit and one Circuit closes, by which an alarm device or a switching device intervening in the operation is actuated.

In view of the fact that it can sometimes be a matter of just random fluctuations in the content of one or the other gas, it is advisable to implement such alarm or self-acting shut-off devices for the gas supply in the main line with a certain degree of inertia, see above that only long-lasting and thus actually threatening levels of one or the other gas finally activate these alarm or shutdown devices.

In order to prevent the flame from flashing back into the pipe when investigating gases where the mixing ratio is close to and often above the explosion limit, it is advisable to have a non-return valve between the gas pipe and the apparatus, for example in the simplest form of a Wulff bottle filled with mercury to arrange.

It will also be useful to attach such a bottle or other non-return valve behind the Rotamesser R so that air cannot be sucked into the device. These non-return valves are not indicated in the drawing, as they are normal. "Gases lying above the explosion limit" are not examined.

However, the device according to the invention will be the best preventive measure against their unintended emergence, since it automatically indicates any change in the composition of the gas after a few seconds after this change has occurred, without any operation. The only maintenance that the apparatus according to the invention requires is that when using a cooled chamber <I> A </I> or. <I> A '</I> the ice * is renewed from time to time.

In addition, a renewal or regeneration of the contents of the chamber B in the normal oxygen or oxygen. Hydrogen contamination of the gases to be examined only required after many months.

If you want to determine the moisture content of the gas mixture at the same time; a hygrometer H is advantageously connected upstream of the snacking or drying element T, with which the moisture content of the gas can be monitored at the same time.
