Description

Mechanism for controlling parts of a machine for punching cards or cards from a recording machine. The present invention relates to a mechanism for controlling parts of a machine to be made in perforation cards corresponding to statistical or other recordings. from a recording machine, which can. be, for example, a machine. typewriter, a comp table machine, an adding machine or any other recording machine.

This mechanism is characterized by a positive device included in the latter machine, established so as to automatically select, from among the maneuvers performed on said recording machine, those which must act on said members of the. punching machine.

Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, is a side elevation of an embodiment of the mechanism forming the subject of the invention, the recording machine being a recording machine. to write; la, fi-. 2 is a detail view thereof showing a front elevation of a selector bar; Fig.3 is a .schéma -de control circuits, and the. fig. 4 -is a diagram showing any of these control circuits.

Reference will first be made to FIG. 4 of the sins to better understand the operation of the mechanism shown. In this embodiment this mechanism is arranged to selectively control the activation of several solenoids 10 mounted one in each control circuit.

The excitation of a solenoid 10 has the effect that the core 10 'of this solenoid acts on a rod 11 transmits both a movement to a bent lever and pi voting 12 which actuates a plunger 13 for the establishment of a lock 14 surmon so much the. tension of its return spring 15, in order to prevent movement of a punch 16 when the punch frame 17 and the card presentation plate 18 are moved upwardly relative to the punch 16.

This punch mechanism is a unit of a complete card punching mechanism in which locks such as 14 are selectively placed so that their respective punches, controlled by the inserted screws, function to perforate the card, while those of the punches which are not held by the bolts can move freely with the card without perforating it. More complete details can be found. on the. construction of the punches with reference to US Patent No. 1305557 of June 3, 1919, and Swiss Patent No. 116849.

The solenoid 10 is mounted in a circuit comprising a conductor 20 connected to a contactor 21 mounted opposite a contact 22 re linked by a conductor 23 to a contact 24. The contactor 21 is mounted so as to be actuated by the maneuver. of a key 25 of a typewriter 26, this key 25 being, as shown in the drawing, one of the many keys of the. typewriter. Opposite contact 2.1 is a contactor 27 which is connected to the common return conductor 28 of the circuit comprising a rheos state 30, a switch 31 and a generator 32.

The circuit which has just been described can be considered as being one of the typewriter key control circuits represented by, FIG. 3, and as the contactor 27 is mounted on the return conductor common to all the circuits, the operation of any one of the keys of the typewriter, when this contactor 27 is closed, will close the circuit of this control key. la, ma chine to write and will actuate, thus the lock corresponding to the. key down 25.

If we lower for example the key <B> 8 </B> key the machine. write, its circuit will be closed and the lock number <B> 8 </B> of the punch mechanism will be positioned so that the corresponding punch 'drills a hole in the. column position -8 above; which is the trolley at. punches.

For the automatic selection of the row or rows in which a red worm must be placed in order to only perforate on the cards one or more predetermined columns, the contactor 27 carries a control roller 33 mounted on the path of one of the faces of a selector bar 34. In the present case this bar has a square section, so that it can have four control surfaces, but it is indeed in tension that the bar could be of section polygonal with a different number of sides, any face of which can serve as a control face.

As shown in the figure, this selector bar 34 is mounted on the carriage 35 of the machine. to write. while the contactor 27 and its associated parts are carried by the fixed frame 36 of the typewriter. It can thus be seen that, when the carriage of the typewriter moves step by step from one side of the machine to the other, the selector bar 34 is also moved under the contact roller 33.

In order to obtain the automatic selection of the columns of the map which should be drilled, the control surfaces of the bar 34 include rest notches <B> '</B> 7 limited by notches 38 made transversely. in the respective faces of the bar 34. The bar is mounted relative to the contact roller 33 so that, when the roller 33 engages on a rest notch 37, the contactor 27 is close to the contact 24, but when a notch 38 is placed in front of the roller 33, the contactor 27 moves away from 24, the notch being deep enough to contain the roller. 33 without giving it any movement.

Consequently, by arranging the rest notches 37 to. locations determined in advance on the selector bar 34 and giving them a determined length in advance, one column of the. map or several successive columns of the. card are automatically selected for the. perforation. As different groups of cards may require different perforations in the columns from those of other groups, each face of the bar 34 has resting notches arranged in different ways and thus a pre-defined perforation is obtained for each group of cards.

The bar 34 is mounted on ap pliques 40 which allow it to turn and it carries an operating button 41 by means of which it is possible to impart to it the partial rotation necessary to bring one of its faces to the operating position, the bar. bar 34 being securely held in this position by a spring 42.

To reduce the annoying formation of sparks at the contacts, a capacitor 43 of suitable capacity is bridged on the circuit in the desired position.

Additional contactors actuated by contactors are part of the assembly, one of these contactors, 44, being mounted so as to be actuated by the key 45 for receding the carriage of the machine used to space the columns; another, 46, used to make the spacings by leaps; another, 47, used to maneuver by hand the return of the punch lock and the carriage of the typewriter and being mounted in parallel with the conjoneteur 48 which serves to effect the automatic return of the punch carriage, The bar d The typewriter spacing is designated 50.

In the. fig.3 the con, junctors comprising the contactors 21 are numbered so as to. correspond to the positions of the names of a map column and although only two keys 25 are shown in this diagram, it is understood that there are. a key 25 for each conjoneteur and that it is, only to simplify the drawing, that the other keys are not shown.

The operation is as follows: we first place the selector bar 34 so as to bring the face of which the resting notches 37 are arranged in order to produce on the. card a perforation the arrangement of which corresponds to the indications of the group to be recorded, in contact with the roller 33 which establishes contact. The bar 34 is held, in the selected position, by the spring 42, so that it can neither turn nor be moved in any other way during the operating cycle.

We bring the carriage 26 to its starting position, then we use the, my typewriter as usual, so that its carriage 35 moves step by step from one side of the machine to the other by stepping - Its the selector bar 34 in front of the roller 33. During this movement, the successive rest notches 37 move the roller 33 so as to close the contactor 27, which is common to all the circuits, so that the operation of a key Any number 25 will close the circuit for that key and engage the punch lock controlled by that circuit.

When a notch 38 is in front of the roller 33, the common conjonetor remains open, so that the operation of any key does not put any punch lock in place. This way the. The typewriter operates as usual by recording the written indications and only the columns of the card which have been previously selected by the choice of the face of the selector bar are punched.

Although the arrangement in question involves the placement of punch locks by the number keys of the typewriter, it is obvious that one can. achieve a similar setting by arranging for contact to be made by letter keys or other characters.

Although the foregoing description relates especially to a typewriter, it is understood that this description is given merely by way of example of an application of the invention, since in general the invention is applicable to, a recording machine in general, such as a recording machine. typewriter, a typewriter, an accounting machine or any other machine capable of functioning in combination with a card-punching mechanism.
