Description
Steel alloy for tools. While nickel has long been used as an alloying element for structural steels, which, in addition to good machinability and great toughness, it gives excellent strength properties, it has not yet been possible to make use of these excellent properties of nickel in tool steels, where they are particularly useful Tools for cold impact work that must have a high degree of external hardness and therefore require water hardness. Whoever is required because, in the presence of slightly higher carbon contents, the nickel makes the tool steel brittle and sensitive to fire.
On the basis of detailed tests, it has now been possible to produce a nickel alloy tool steel that does not have the aforementioned disadvantageous phenomena.
According to the present invention, this is achieved in that a tool steel with about 0.6 to 1.5% carbon content and 0.5 to 8 0 '"nickel,
1 bia 5 % at least one hardening, but not embrittling, ketal is added. As a result, a steel is obtained that combines hardness with great toughness, can be hardened in water and is not sensitive to overheating. Such a steel is particularly useful for cold impact work.
The composition of the steel moves, for example, within the following limits: only 0.6 to 1.5% C, 0.5 to 3% Ni, 1 to 5% Wo. The tungsten can be wholly or partially replaced by vanadium,
but not by molybdenum or chromium. The latter metal in particular would make the steel too brittle and would completely rule out water hardening. In addition, chromium-nickel steels have the disadvantage of being brittle.
