Description
Process for the protection of easily oxidizable metals. In the main patent, filed in none by the same inventor and under the same title, March G, 1926 and issued under number 118,978, a process for protecting easily oxidizable metals was described, according to which the surface of the part is coated metal of a material composed at least in part of a phenol.
In this main patent, the possibility of using, instead of phenol alone, coatings containing a phenol has been indicated in particular.
The present addition relates to an improvement to this process. According to the invention, a coating containing a synthetic resin and a phenol in the free state is used to form a film on the surface of the object to be protected.
It is known that bakelite-based coatings or lacquers have already been used to protect oxidizable metals, this coating alone constituting the protective layer.
But in coatings of this kind, the phenol did not intervene in the free state to give a protective layer or film, but only as a constituent of a complex body forming the synthetic resin itself and not not having. action on the metal.
As a result, the production of a protective and strongly adherent film of magnesium phenate or the like was made im possible.
Complete protection of metal objects such as magnesium can be obtained by employing a coating formed by adding a lacquer or varnish based on synthetic resin, prepared by the usual means, with a certain quantity of free phenol. Said solution constitutes a coating which can be extended to the surface of the part and which by its phenol attacks the metal and gives a protective layer or crust.
Depending on the nature of the varnish or the lacquer used, it is then possible, if it is desirable, to produce a drying or baking of the varnish by the processes usually employed for this purpose.
It is also possible to use a coating obtained by modifying the usual conditions for preparing varnishes based on synthetic resin, from formalin and a phenol (cresol, ete :) so as to leave an excess of free phenol sufficient for that an immediate attack takes place on the metal when it is covered with the substance thus obtained.
