Process for the production of a plastic material. The subject matter of the invention is a method for producing a plastic.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that formaldehyde, dieyandiamide and casein, with or without the use of a condensing agent, are allowed to act on one another in the heat. The resulting mixed colloid can be made usable in a variety of ways.
It is particularly suitable, on the one hand, for the production of press powders, which deliver translucent to white, light-resistant, extremely high-quality pressed parts, and on the other hand, for the production of plastic materials in the narrower sense (molded plastics, for example plates or rods).
If you try to convert a protein, in particular casein, into a concentrated solution, for example by mixing one part by weight of casein with two parts by weight of 10% sodium hydroxide solution, a tough dough is obtained. If this tough dough is treated with form aldehyde, it instantly coagulates into a mass that can no longer be processed.
The surprising observation has now been made that the tough dough is liquefied by the addition of dieyandiamide. Immediately after stirring in dieyandiamide, it changes into a water-thin liquid. The sol produced in this way unexpectedly has the technically extremely valuable property of not coagulating when it comes into contact with formaldehyde in the braid, but rather forming a mixed colloid through condensation with the aldehyde.
This surprising observation initially led to the working method of allowing formaldehyde, dieyandiamide and casein to act on one another at the same time.
With the same result, one can also process the casein in an already condensing mixture of dieyandiamide and formaldehyde, or reacting the casein in a mixture with resinous or powdery dieyandiamide-formaldehyde condensation product together with the formaldehyde. An indispensable condition for achieving the specified effect is that the casein still has an effect with the formaldehyde and that a mixed colloid can be formed in this way.
The condensation product is conveniently dried and ground. It then represents a white powder that can be pressed into completely light-resistant, translucent to white compacts of all kinds under the combined or separate action of heat and pressure. Such compacts can be used as a replacement for milk glass, porcelain, etc. in the Ge area of gallantry and jewelry and in similar areas, as well as electro-technical insulation material in the most extensive way, without this listing the many possible uses would be exhausted.
The viscosity-reducing effect of die, yandiamide on casein is also advantageous when producing the condensation product in the form of plates or rods.
The production of the known synthetic materials from protein materials, especially Ka, is done in such a way that the protein material used is used to form a dough which is preformed into plates or rods, then subjected to the action of formaldehyde and finally dried. Plastics obtained in this way have a number of defects, among which the difficulty in producing thicker pieces, the sensitivity to water, the poor heat resistance and the low electrical strengths are particularly troublesome. These disadvantages can be reduced if the method according to the invention is carried out according to the aforementioned working procedure.
For example, dieyandiamide, casein and a dry, formaldehyde-releasing substance (such as paraformaldehyde or trioxymethylene) are mixed and made to act on one another using pressure and heat, with or without the addition of a condensing agent. This is followed suitably by a drying process.
Embodiments: 1. 100 parts by weight of casein are mixed with about 100 parts by weight of water, a granular pulp being disfigured. 121 parts by weight of dieyandiamide are then added and the mixture is gently heated. This dieyandiamide component initially only has the purpose of liquefying the mass, as the granular casein pulp turns into an almost water-thin solution as soon as the dieyandiamide is dissolved.
The casein Dieyandia.mi (1 solution produced in this way) is now placed in a boiling solution of 121 parts by weight of dicyandiamide and 200 parts by weight of formaldehyde and heated until the formation of the nisel colloid by condensation is sufficiently advanced.
Two different routes can be used for further processing of the reaction product. The heating is either continued until a hydrophobic condensation product separates out on cooling, which can be promoted by suitable adjustment of the hydrogen ion concentration. The resinous mixed colloid obtained in this way is then converted into a press powder as such by drying and grinding, preferably with the addition of suitable fibers.
Such a press powder is obtained in another way by leaving the resinous mixed colloid in solution and soaking fibrous materials with this solution in order to then dry and grind them. In both cases, the result is a press powder which can be shaped into press articles of the most varied kinds by the application of pressure and heat. 2.
To produce the condensation product as a molded article, for example from plates or rods, dieyandiamide ir M .e are intimately kneaded alone with casein and paraformaldehyde, the proportions of which can vary widely The mass is then shaped into plates or rods, for example in the hot press, and the reaction mixture condenses through the action of heat and pressure in the hot press.
After shaping, the * goods are dried and can now be used in many ways. Instead of paraformaldehyde, other substances that split off formaldehyde can also be used.
The appearance and properties of both the initially mentioned press powder and the formlinoe described above can be influenced in various ways by mechanical incorporation of fillers and additives of all kinds. For example, these products can be mixed with organic and inorganic dyes colored in all shades.
Both the compacts # produced from the press powders and the plastic masses already have very high mechanical strengths. If you also get fibrous substances of an inorganic or organic nature in processed or unprocessed form - i.e. in the form of paper, fabrics, fibers,
Flakes or the like - incorporated mechanically, this gives technical materials with excellent mechanical strengths.
