La fis. 1 est une @coupe transversale mon trant le chariot mobile, la roue de dispersion, la crémaillère, la bande alphabétique, .des roues intermédiaires et d'autres pièces en relation l'une avec l'autre; La fis. 2 est une vue de face en partie en coupe, mais le chariot et les touches d'ac- tionnement ne sont pas représentés; La fis. 3 est une vue d'arrière en partie en coupe; La fis. 4 est une coupe de l'extrémité postérieure montrant,des cadrans de mise en position et la commande, par chaine pour le chariot mobile;
Sur les dessins, 1 est .le bâti -de la ma chine, dans lequel sont disposées .des traver ses 2 servant à supporter des paliers pour des arbres portant des organes pouvant tourner, ces traverses s'ajustent à l'extrémité anté rieure et à l'extrémité postérieure du bâti 1;

It is also provided with an engagement lug 18 which is intended to control the movement of a selection wheel, as will be described below. The fixed carriage (not shown) is located at the end of the machine closest to the keyboard and is adjusted in a manner analogous to the mobile carriage, except that it does not include guide members. taking in an engagement tab 18 and a hand control lever 13.
The rods <B> A </B> and 17 extend over the entire length of the machine as do the shafts 19; 20, 21 and 22 are continuous over the entire length of the machine and their bearings are housed in the cross members 2. The rods and shafts <B> 16, </B> 20, 21 and 22 are fixed and around them rotate organs, superimposed. The shaft 19 carries a series of cogwheels which can be rotated and rotated in a controlled manner. The shaft 17 can oscillate so as to actuate the hammer 4, and the cam 9 is hole vant on the mobile carriages 3 and the fixed carriage (not shown).
On the other hand, a shaft 23 is carried by a frame 26 and continues over the entire length of this frame 26. This frame 26 also carries a shaft 25 which projects beyond the frame at the front of the frame. ma chine and a shaft 24 ballast supported in a similar way, but made, projecting at both ends of the machine. and can rotate and slide in the direction of its length.
The shaft 25 is capable of oscillating, while the frame 2'6 is capable of pivoting around the fixed shaft 22 carried by the cross members 2 and is shaped to allow pivoting to allow meshing or disengaging. -Cogged wheels carried by the shafts 19, 23 and 21, 24 as required for the operation of the machine. The series of cogwheels 27 rotating on the shaft 19 (Fig. 1) is provided with teeth 28 and gaps 29 - and each carries a toothed wheel 30.
The shaft 19 is provided with a locking member 31 (fig. 1 and 6) which is described. hereinafter. A series of writing wheels which are integral with or which are attached to the toothed wheels 33 are carried by the shaft 20 and a series of intermediate toothed wheels 34 and pawls 35 are carried by the shaft. 21. The. wheels 32, 33 and 34 as well as wheels 32b and 33b can turn on their shafts 20 and 21 and each of the wheels 34 constantly meshes with a wheel 33 or 33b, while the pawls 35 each enter. a wheel 34.
The shaft 25 is provided with a fixed toothed wheel 88 (fig. 2) which turns it and carries a wheel, of movable selection 36 (fig. 5) whose role is to mesh with writing wheels. successive and put them in place for writing. An intermediate toothed wheel 37 can mesh with each wheel 30: when the frame 226 lifts up and a spring-loaded release lever is attached to the frame and co-operates with the wheels 37 carried by the shaft 23.
On the shaft 24 are mounted -dispersing wheels 39 which have teeth irregularly spaced on their periphery and -which are provided with three-sided cams 40 and internally toothed wheels 41, and on the shaft 24 are located also: pawls 42 intended to come into engagement with the internal d_ enture, higher of the wheels 41.
A slotted member 43 is intended to provide support for the rotating rack wheels 27. When struck by a pawl 14 to stop the movement of the carriage 3. 44 (Fig. 2) is a universal bar actuated by. button levers 45 (fig. 5). 46 (fig. 2 and 5) is also a common bar actuated by a cam face 47 located on each button lever 45. 48 is an oscillating member, pivots both in bearings 49 and carrying a split block 50 (fig. 5) which circulates following a movement: back and forth along:
of an or gane in the form of a propeller 51 by causing the rotation of the wheel: of gears 52 which is situated at one end of the propeller 51 and which meshes with the wheel 33a. The other end of the helix-shaped member 51 is placed in a bearing 53 carried by the support member 54.
The shaft 24 is provided with a toothed wheel 55 at the front end of the machine, and with a toothed wheel 55a (fig. 3) at the rear end of the machine and has a groove mechanism. 56 (fig. À) intended to be actuated by a toothed wheel 57 carried by a shaft 58 and actuated by a tammande handle 58a or an equivalent member, placed on the side of the machine. It is also provided with an operating button 59.
The button 59 serves to give a rotational movement to the shaft 24 and the wheel 57 is used to give a longitudinal movement by its engagement with the grooved part 56 of the shaft 24. By operating the handle 58a of after the positions or divisions indicated on a dial 59b (fig. 7) each group of dispersing wheels can be controlled independently of the others, while the shaft 24 is moved axially. 60 (Fig. 2 and 5) is a frame supporting the oscillating member 48 and 61 is a slot in this frame intended to allow movement of the common bar 46.
63 (fig. 2) and 63a (fig. 3 and 4) are a series of position-setting dials each consisting of five dials bearing indices on their periphery, and each dial of the different series is provided with a toothed wheel, 64,, 64a intended to engage with the wheels: toothed 55, 55a.
The setting dials 63, 63a are free separately, so as to rotate on their respective shafts 65, 65a mounted in supports 66, 6,6a. 67 (fig. 2) is a cam mounted on shaft 17 which controls hammer 4 and cam 9 and 68 is a spring attached to cam 67 at one end and frame pin 69 at the other. end. A release lever 70 rotates on a shaft 71 when actuated by a spring 72 after a cam 73 of a multiple cam rod 74 disengages it upon lifting of the rod.
A cam 75 re-energizes the spring 68 when the cam rod 74 rolls over or down and the spring 72 returns the trip lever 70 into engagement leaving the cam 67 locked but under the tension of res out 68. The following movement of the rod 74 upwards. triggers the cam 67 and oscillates the camshaft 17, which operates the hammer 4 and the cam 9. A cam 76 mounted on the rod 74 actuates a pawl 77 which regulates the movement of a caster wheel 78 which is mounted on the shaft 19. The rod 74 rises and falls following the movement of the bar 44 which is actuated by the handle 45.
The bar 44 is controlled by the movement of the member 45 at the same time when this member 45 actuates the member 46 and moves it: in the slide or opening 61. FIGS. 3 and 4 show the movement of transmission of the movable carriage 3 to the shaft 24. A chain wheel <B> 789 </B> is placed so as to have a freewheeling action, in that it does not turn the shaft 79 when the movable carriage 3 approaches it: during the strike. The chain 80 is attached to the movable carriage 3 by one end and is attached to the drum 81, actuated by a spring, at the other end and it engages with the. chain wheel 78 throughout its movement.
When the shaft 79 is rotated by the action of the return of the carriage 3 towards the front of the machine, a continuous toothed wheel 82, fixed on the shaft 24, turns the dispersing wheels and, the parts which cooperate with them to produce a key redistri bution these, by the bevel gears 83 and 84 and. a fluted wheel 85 mounted with a bevel wheel 84 on the shaft 86. A clutch mechanism located at the rear of the machine, actuated by an oscillating and hand control, can be used in order to: 'shaft 24, so as to have a sliding action if desired.
As shown in fig. 5, the dispersing wheels 39 are arranged in groups or in blocks of six, mounted on a shaft 24 and fixed to the latter or controlled on the latter by pawls 42 held by nuts and adapted to the sliding movement. on shaft 24, so as to engage internal toothing 41, each block being capable of independent rotational movement when not locked to shaft 24 by engaging pawl 42 with teeth 4.1.
The machine is provided with a scatter wheel 39 and all the necessary intermediate members for each strike wheel 32 which is intended to cooperate with the scatter wheels to produce the number, but the two alphabetic bands 32a, 32b, indicated above are out of the action of the scatter wheels 39. The stationary carriage (not shown) is mounted above a strike wheel 32a and produces the "clear" copy of the message being written.
A striking wheel 32u provides the means of writing the address "in clear" at the beginning on the tape on which the encrypted form of the message is to be produced, a suitable: stop and retainer being placed on the frame 1 to maintain the mobile carriage 3 in its front position during this operation,: carriage which is released by pulling on the lever 13 to bring the carriage back. When the: encryption is in progress, the mobile carriage 3 moves away from the operator and is brought back by the operator at the end of his travel.
Before starting the writing, the striking wheels 32, which originally are placed in the same way on the shaft 20, will be put in a different order, since otherwise the text would become the same on the strips of paper from both carriages. For this purpose, the carriage 3 is first brought to the end remote from the machine and wedged. The wheel 82 is: released from its shaft 24, so that: this shaft can slide freely in the axial direction and also: be rotated by means of a button 59. In addition, the oscillating frame 26 occupies its lower position as shown in fig. 1. And the wheels 37 are thus released from the wheels 30, -as well as the wheels 39 are -the intermediate wheels 34.
A selector wheel 36 which can slide on the shaft 25 and which follows the carriage 3 is disengaged from the wheels 34, since the carriage lies beyond them. The toothed wheel 55a (fig. 4) situated at the rear end of the machine is also in mesh with a toothed wheel 64a of the setting dial: and the toothed wheel 55 is out of engagement with the toothed wheel 64 of the key dial in position (fig. 2).
The parts being in this arrangement, the "dispersing wheels" 39 are put in an order defined by the actuation of the shaft 58 and the button 59 as follows: The pawls 42 mounted on the shaft 24, and the internal teeth 41 clans each group of six dispersing wheels are arranged such that a progressive engagement of the pawls 42 in the internal teeth 41 is ensured.
Starting from the rear end of the machine, the first pawl 42 (not shown) on the shaft 24 is constantly engaged with its internal teeth, but when the button 59 is in the position shown in FIG. 5, all other pawls 42 are out of engagement with their respective internal teeth 41. When button 59 is moved outward by the sliding of shaft 24 as described, engagement of pawls 42 and wheels 41 is engaged. carried out gradually and maintained.
At this time, the toothed wheel 55a is engaged with a toothed wheel 64a of the positioner, so that in the first position, the first positioner dial is moved when the button 59 is turned on. rotation and the first group of scattering wheels 39 is thus brought into a defined position. -When the shaft 24 is pulled forward by the -rotation -of the shaft 58, actuated by the shaft 58a, the second group of dispersing wheels is engaged with its pawl 42, the first group being also retained by its own pawl 42.
The gear 55a has, however, moved out of engagement with the first dial wheel 64a and engaged with the second dial gear 64a and so on.
This arrangement ensures that in a five letter composition, a change of a single letter alters the relative position of all five scatter wheel blocks <B> 39 </B> c, t however leaves the dials set. correctly for reference and control.
When the positioning operation is finished, the shaft 24 continues to be actuated inwards until the toothed wheel 55a passes the line of the last toothed wheel of the setting dial. 64, 64a,
so that the shaft 24 is free to rotate during the operation of the machine without interfering with the setting dials 63a. The last movement of shaft 24 can be used to actuate a suitable locking member for locking all keys 45 until toothed wheel 55a is released from the setting dials 63a after which a key any 45 can. be actuated.
The effect of this positioning is to determine the arrangement of teeth which, along the line of the dispersing wheels, engage with the teeth of the striking wheels when the movable carriage is returned. in the front of the machine, and since each scatter wheel has a different number of differently spaced teeth, the result of this positioning is very effective. Each group of six dispersion wheels is provided with a solid toothed wheel 87 (fig. 5) which does not engage with any of the intermediaries mentioned above, but which is subjected to the action of: a spring .
This is to ensure a definite initial correspondence of position when the pawls 42 are not in engagement with the internal toothings 41. The position dials 63a are intended to be hidden and locked out of sight and. locking member employed for this purpose can be established so as to immobilize the setting dials 63a, when they are locked out of sight. This setting is the setting to zero of the machine. It is agreed in advance between the parties and must not be announced to the recipient in an encrypted message, and frequent change is unnecessary.
The control lever 13 not only serves as a handle intended to be used to bring the mobile carriage 3 back to the front of the machine, but it is also connected to a mobile carriage 3 and provided with a plate 13a in such a way. that by pressing on the latter while the lever 13 is being pulled, it releases a stop latch indicated above which locks. the mobile carriage 3 at the end of its.
stroke, but before that occurs the upward pulling of lever 13, lifting of chassis 26 to force scatter wheels 39 and intermediate wheels 37 to engage with intermediate wheels 34 and wheels toothed rack 30 and at the same time disengage the movable selection wheel 36 from the intermediate wheel 34, the arrangement being such that complete engagement of the wheels 39, 34, 37, 30 is ensured before the carriage 3 is free - to move.
After carrying out the zeroing, the machine must also be adjusted according to a key word: given, which is done in the same way, but using the five pairs of wheels 63, 64 located at the front of the machine (fig. 2 and 7) and the wheel 55 which rattles with them after the frame 26 has been lifted. In the raised position of this frame, the toothed wheel 55a is released from the wheels 64a, so that the shaft 24 can again be moved rearward by means of the connecting rod 58a without interfering with the movement of the wheels 64a. In the rear position of the shaft 24, the latter is engaged only with the rear drum 39a by its pawl 42.
When the knob 59 is then turned, not only the position of this drum and of the rear wheel i63 is changed, but also that of the intermediate wheels 34 which mesh with the wheels 39 of this drum and with the five striking wheels. 32 which cooperate with this drum. These five striking wheels are thus distributed again or are placed in a different way. After having moved the shaft further forward to such an extent that the next pawl 42 penetrates, through its teeth 41, into the next drum. 39a, the knob 59 is rotated again, so that the next wheel 63 and the ten posterior strike wheels are once more moved and so on.
When the setting of the keyword has thus been completed, the shaft 24 is moved further forward, so that the wheels 55 and 55a no longer mesh with their wheels 64 and 64a. The wheel 82 is thus engaged and the frame 26 is disengaged by exerting pressure on the button 13b (fig. 7), so that the frame is lowered.
When the movable carriage 3 is pulled forward, the chain 80 (fig. 4) actuates the chain wheel 78 and the wheels 83, 84, 85 and thus actuates a fully toothed wheel 82 which, in turn, activates the chain wheel. turns the scattering wheels 39 and, through the intermediaries 34 of the striking wheels 32 and through the intermediaries 37 and 30, the exhaust of the wheels of the crankshafts 27.
This produces a new distribution of the strike wheels 32 and the rack wheels 27 - and as these wheels 27 are provided with gaps 29 which allow the movable carriage 3 to "jump" or neglect some of the alphabetic wheels 32 when moving. In writing, it can be seen that the .dispersion wheels 39 react directly and through other organs to produce the number and that they are thus capable of reacting simultaneously in several different ways.
While writing in figures, the carriage 3 is gradually and automatically moved along the strike-wheel length and is then returned by hand to the front position exactly above the front. first striking wheel 3 ?. During this return movement, the carriage 3 drives the shaft 24 by the chain 80 and has also inserted all the striking wheels by means of. dispersion wheels.
The oscillating frame 26 is raised automatically each time the carriage 3 is brought back to the front by exerting a traction on the handle 13 and it is lowered again when this handle is released. After the carriage 3 has thus been brought to the front and the writing in numbers has to be made up, the striking wheels have been distributed again.
In order to return the striking wheels to their original position, after having thus been repeatedly rotated, a counting device 89 (Fig. 7) is provided and this device meshes with the wheel 55, but only with this when it is in its most anterior position and thus not during the placement of the keyword.
To bring the machine back to a position in which it is ready to encrypt or decrypt a message, the revolution counter is reset to zero by operating button 59 in the opposite direction to that used during the operation. write, and the-dials for setting the message -63 are returned to their initial position by actuation of the button 59 in the opposite direction of the wheel 57 relative to that which produces the respective positions.
To decipher a message, the predetermined zeroing is left on the machine and the disclosed message position is. established before the decryption actuation begins. When this is done, a copy of the cipher to be deciphered is written on the tape adapted to the fixed carriage and the deciphered version is written on the tape adapted to the mobile carriage 3.
The rack wheels 27 cooperate with the pawl 14 to regulate the movement of the movable carriage 3 above the wheels 32. Fig. 1 shows a mode of operation which involves the rotation of the shaft 19 to obtain a sliding release of the fixed pawl 1.4, but there are other means of obtaining the desired results to ensure a progression of the mobile carriage 3 by means of one or more secondary action members born by the dispersing wheels 39.
It goes without saying that a releasable pawl can be employed and that a rack provided with movable teeth, actuated by cams mounted on a wheel intended to be rotated by the dispersion wheel 39 will produce the same effect. . The dispersing wheels 39 can be placed in the machine, so as to combine the function of dispersing wheels and rack wheels 27. The fixed pawl 14 is fixed to the movable carriage 3 and is intended to engage with it. a tooth 28 in a position of the shaft 19 and to slide ser in the space 28a when the shaft 19 is released by the pawl 7 (Fig. 2) to turn.
The rack wheels 27 are fitted on the shaft 19, so that in the alignment traversed by the pawl 14, the teeth 28 and the spaces 28a are. offset, which will give: the certainty that a space 28a of one wheel is in alignment with a tooth 28 of the following wheel, except when there is a gap 29. As in this case, the tree 19 turns while writing, it is necessary that it be. provided at one end with an indicator dial and an arrow (not shown), so that it is possible to return to its starting position with precision after the machine has been zeroed, as has been previously described.
The shaft 19 does not turn when the scatter wheels 39 are running, but the wheels of the racks? 7 rotate on shaft 19 when this happens. The shaft 19 is split along its length and is provided with a wedged locking member 31 which is disengaged: suitably to allow the rack wheels 27 to rotate and is locked before the intermediate wheels 37 come out. with the toothed wheels 30.
The control lever 13 or a suitable member mounted on the movable carriage 3 can produce this disengagement movement and the lock position can be restored by a suitable spring mounted on the shaft 19 and. a projection of the locking bar 31.
The wheels 32 and their toothed wheels 33 are free on the shaft 20 but are kept in a corresponding position on the latter by means of their continuous and uninterrupted meshing with the intermediate wheel 34 which is positively brought into contact with the latter. Correspondence by the engagement pawl 35 mounted on the shaft 21. The engagement pawl 35 is provided with two release levers 35a, 35b. The release lever 35 <1 releases the engagement pawl 35 when the three-sided cams 40 engage it as they do when the scatter wheel 39 lifts into engagement with the intermediate wheel 34.
The faces of the cam 40 are disposed such that the engagement pawl 35 is only released when a tooth of the dispersion wheel 39 engages a tooth of the intermediate wheel 34, and it is immediately re-engaged. - ment when this engagement of teeth r # st interrupted by the creation of an empty space on the dispersion wheel 39 or by the fact that it pivots out of engagement.
The release lever 351) releases the engalz pawl, m @, nt 35 when the tab 18 of the mobile carriage 3 meets the latter at the moment when the carriage comes to rest at each stop, in its progressive displacement au- above the wheels. This allows the wheels 32 to be rotated by the movable selection wheel 36, which is mounted to slide on the shaft 25 and receives the tab 18 of the carriage, so that it is put. engaged with successive wheels 34, while the carriage moves towards the rear .de the machine. As the tab 18 moves with the movable carriage 3, it re-engages an engaging pawl 35 and releases the next one and so on.
When the writing is about to begin and an encrypted message is to be established from a clear text manuscript, the carriage 3 is brought to its most anterior position above the wheel 32b and remains there while the The address is written in clear on the strips of paper of the two carriages by means of striking wheels 32a and 32b. This is possible because the carriage 3 is placed above all the rack wheels 21, so that the pawl or rod 14 is disengaged from them and the carriage 33 is held in this position and cannot not be pulled by the chain 80.
Then the carriage 3 is released and is placed above the first striking wheel 32 to allow the encryption to begin. During this writing in figures, the oscillating chassis. 26 is lowered and the wheels 39 and 37 are thus disengaged from the other wheels, but the wheel 52 of the shaft 51 is engaged both with the wheel 88 of the shaft 25 and with the toothed wheel 33a of the striking wheel 32a. When a key 45 is then lowered, the wheels 32a and 88 are actuated by the shaft 51 and the wheel 52.
By means of the wheels 32, the cipher text is produced on the paper web of the movable carriage by its selection wheel 36 which rotates a wheel 32, 33, so as to expose a character to the paper web of the carriage. 3. At the same time, the key has raised the rod 74 which first disengages the cam 67 and rotates the shaft 17 with its hammer 4 and its cam 9 and further puts the pawl 77 flat to rotate. the shaft 19 and its cogwheels 27.
The hammer 4 rubs the paper web against the wheel 32 thereby producing an impression of the character on the web, while the cam 9 produces the paper and ink ribbon supply to the web by means of the. pawls 11 and 12. When the key is released, the shaft 51 and the wheels 36 and 32 return at the same time as the rod 74, which thus returns the shaft 17, the hammer 4 and the cam 9 in their primitive position and, in addition, moves the shaft 19 by one tooth.
The wheels 27 are rotated by a tooth -and allow the pawl 14 to pass and abut against the next tooth 28 in its path, while -letting the carriage 3 be pulled by the chain 80 and allowing the finger 18 -to remove its pressure against an arm 35b and transfer it to the next arm 35b, which allows the intermediate wheel 34 used precisely at this moment to be snapped in and the next to be released as soon as 'it is meshed with wheel 36.
The machine is now ready to write the next letter. After using all the striking wheels each once, when the pawl 14 passes through a gap 29 without teeth of the wheel 27, the cha riot -is 4th again pulled forward at the level of the first striking wheel. 32 by pulling on the handle 13 which thus lifts the frame 26 to allow the engagement of the dispersing wheels 39, the striking wheels 32 and, the rack wheels 27, which allows the striking wheels and the wheels to create mesh to be distributed again.
When the handle 13 is released, the frame 26 drops again and writing can continue.
If, then, another letter must be written or if a letter must be deciphered, the striking wheels and the cogwheels must be returned to their original position, i.e. the zero position by making first turn the knob 59 backwards until the counter R9 indicates zero, after which the wheels 63 are brought back to zero by successive thrusts of the shaft 24 and rotations towards, the back of button 59. After that, the wheels are again scattered according to the keyword by means of which the new letter is to be decrypted or encrypted.
If a decryption is to take place, the number is written on the keys whereby the cipher text appears on the tape & paper - of the fixed carriage, while the corresponding clear text appears on the paper tape - of the carriage. mo bile. This is possible because each wheel; 32 has the same indications following the same series as the wheels 39-a, 32b respectively but in a different order when seen from the end of the shaft.
It will be noted that in FIG. 7, the button 59 is carried by a shaft 24a separate from that shown in fi-. 5. This allows the gear <B> 55 </B> to be used at both ends of the shaft 24, so as to engage in the provided "key" or dial dials. at each end, but since shaft 24a is engaged with shaft 24, the atti.on is the same as if shaft 24 were immediately rotated.
The grouping of letters of a message is effected by increasing, at intervals, the importance of the feeding of the paper web by a device which comprises in the case of a group of ten letters, a cogwheel at ten teeth (not shown), the central part thereof having a toothing among the ten, of higher formation than the ten teeth of the outer parts, the teeth of which have a uniform height. The rack wheel is carried on the shaft 17 by a support shaft on which it rotates.
One end of the paper feed lever 10 moves on the cogwheel and this end can move sideways in two positions and can either engage in the uniformly toothed portions or in the high toothed portion, when cif frage, so as to form ten groups of letters. The other end of the lever 10 is provided with a pawl 12 which engages the paper feed rack wheel 6a on the paper control rod. In the case of a group of five letters, two high toothings can be used. It will be understood that in these arrangements the feeding of the strip by the cam is eliminated.
The arc between the toothed and grooved wheels is such as to avoid unnecessary movement and the relationship between the inclination of the teeth of the machine wheels controlling the actuation of the striking wheels is of the first importance and in besides the relation of inclination between the teeth the circumferences of the engaged wheels must be such as to produce a correct function between the striking wheels, the scattering wheels and the rotatable rack wheels .
Although a single keyboard machine has been described above, it will be understood that more than one keyboard can be used if desired.
