Description

Web hats made of wood. Most of the shuttle frames used in weaving are made of wood; only a few specific types of wood are suitable for this purpose, but they also do not completely meet all the conditions in terms of resistance, weight, etc. So one is z. B. in many cases forced to put in lead to bring the weight to the desired height.

The remarkable observation has now been made that one can obtain weaving shuttles that are superior to the previous ones if the material used is wood that is impregnated with inert, solid chlorinated hydrocarbons with a melting point that is not too high. Substances whose melting point is higher than the temperature at which the type of wood used is damaged can also be used for the present purpose if they are replaced by additives with a lower melting point, such as. B. paraffin or montan wax, or other low-melting chlorinated hydrocarbons can be liquefied at temperatures at which the wood does not suffer.

In particular, higher chlorinated hydrocarbons have proven to be suitable, such as. B. chlorinated naphthalenes with a chlorine content of around 45 to 60% and chlorinated diphenyls, which are solid at normal temperature.

The weaving shuttles can be manufactured in such a way that blocks of suitable size are impregnated and then processed into weaving shuttles with the usual blow machines; however, the shuttle can also be subjected to the treatment in various stages of their manufacture.

Example 1: A block of ash wood is dried in an iron container for 1 hour at 120 'under vacuum, then layered with molten chloronaphthalene with about 50% chlorine content and 1/2 hour under a drue -:

vo @ z - atmospheres heated at 120-125o C. After removing the externally adhering chloronaphthalene, the Bloch can be processed in the usual way on web shooters. The arrows made from it are characterized by increased strength, a very smooth surface, insensitivity to moisture and high weight. In this case, the weight is almost twice as high as that of a shuttle of the same size made of untreated wood.

Example 2: A block of hornbeam is impregnated according to the method given in Example 1 with a wax which is obtained by melting together 100 parts by weight of tetra- ehlornaphthalene with stirring with 10 parts by weight of ceresin and 4 to 5 parts by weight of magnesium oxide was obtained.

The weaving shuttles made from this also offer the advantages mentioned above; in addition to an increase in breaking strength of 30%, they show an increase in weight of 50 to 100%.

A web shuttle made from the very dense persimmon wood is also improved by the impregnation. So z. B. achieved a weight gain of about 30-35%.

Example 3.- 1000 parts by weight of chlorinated diphellyl with a chlorine content of about 60% are heated to 110-120 ° in an autoclave.

500 parts by weight of cut pieces of red beech wood are introduced into the molten mass in a support frame, the autoclave is closed and evacuated at 120 ° for 11/2 hours. After releasing the vacuum it is opened and the frame with the wood is taken out in the warmth. In the usual way, weaving shutters are made from them.
