Description
Process for the preparation of a double salt of calcium nitrate with ammonium nitrate. The present invention relates to a method for producing a double salt of calcium nitrate with ammonium nitrate of the formula 5 Ca (NOs) 2 # (NH4) NOs # 10 H20, particularly suitable for fertilization purposes. The method is characterized in that healing solutions are slowly allowed to cool,
which contain at least 65% anhydrous calcium nitrate and the amount of ammonium nitrate required for double salt formation, causes it to crystallize and separates the crystals from the mother liquor, for example by filtration or centrifugation.
A hot concentrated calcium nitrate solution, which contains about 78% calcium nitrate, is expediently used for the representation of this double salt. An amount of ammonium nitrate is advantageously added to this solution such that for every 5 molecules of calcium nitrate there is 1 molecule of the additional ammonium nitrate in the solution.
During slow cooling, well-formed crystals form, which can easily be separated from the mother liquor by filtration or centrifugation. After the appropriate concentration, the latter can in turn be used to form new amounts of the double salt mentioned. As far as it can be seen, the solid product consists of the complex compound, which the following gross formula corresponds to 5 Ca (N03) 2 # (NH4) NOs # 10 H.0.
Assuming a hot calcium nitrate solution, then after adding the amount of ammonium nitrate calculated from the above formula, when slowly cooling down, a crystal mass is obtained which consists almost exclusively of calcium nitrate-ammonium nitrate double salt.
When producing the above-mentioned double salt, however, one can also start from more dilute calcium nitrate solutions, which must, however, contain at least 65% calcium nitrate. In this case the yield of solid double salt is correspondingly lower, because apparently the formation of the latter is linked to the presence of calcium nitrate dihydrate.
If more highly concentrated solutions are processed, for example those "whose calcium nitrate content exceeds 82%, solid anhydrous calcium nitrate separates out when the solution cools, which makes it difficult to obtain a well-crystallized, uniform double salt.
The calcium nitrate ammonium nitrate double salt produced by the above process is excellent as a fertilizer, especially because it is easy to obtain in an extremely uniform grain size and, thanks to the almost spherical formation of the crystals, shows little tendency to cake. Caking can be completely avoided by drying it slightly, something that has hardly been the case with any other commercially available nitrogen fertilizer. Thanks to its favorable grain properties, the fertilizer is suitable for both manual and machine spreading.
With suitable complete dewatering, the crystals remain intact, whereby they lose noticeably little of their original hardness. Such a product has the advantage of a relatively high nitrogen content. It contains around 18.6% N.
