Description
Seawater-resistant aluminum alloy. It is known that the strength of pure aluminum is increased by the addition of magnesium. can be increased significantly.
The alloys obtained in this way, which have become known under the name Magnalium with a content of 10 and more percent magnesium, are quite durable against attack by atmospheric agents, but not seawater-resistant. On the other hand, if the magnesium content is measured below about 10%, the strength decreases, but it is found that these alloys have excellent seawater resistance.
It has now been found that with the simultaneous presence of small amounts (0.3 to 0.8%) of manganese in the binary alloys of aluminum with 6.5-7.5% magnesium, the mechanical strength is noticeably increased. The corrosion resistance of the alloys, in particular against attack by seawater, is not only not reduced, but it has been shown that especially with these alloys, even after prolonged contact with seawater, the decline in strength properties remains within particularly narrow limits.
Thanks to their excellent properties, these alloys are suitable for numerous purposes in which the known aluminum alloys, be it those with excellent mechanical "properties (duralumin and the like), or those that are primarily characterized by high corrosion resistance (KS -Seawater), do not meet all requirements, because both properties could not be developed to a sufficient quality in them at the same time.
Manufacture floats for seaplanes that meet all requirements. Ternary alloys of aluminum with magnesium and manganese have so far only been described very rarely. First and foremost, it was proposed to use alloys in which both the magnesium content and, in particular, the manganese content reach significantly higher values, for the production of artificial castings.
From this use, however, the particular suitability of certain alloys of this type for purposes that require high resistance to attack by seawater without any significant loss of strength, even after prolonged contact, could not be inferred.
