Description

Process for treating the sludge of organic matter obtained by the action (the yeast on the sewage sludge to recover organic matter therefrom, and product obtained according to this process. The present invention comprises a process for treating sludge of organic nature obtained by the action of yeasts on sewage sludge to recover organic matter, and the product obtained by this process.

It has been proposed, in order to separate the organic matter from the sewage sludge, with a view to making this material usable as a fertilizer, to run the sludge into a container and to add yeasts to it, an appropriate proportion. being about 500 kg of yeast per hundred tonnes of sewage water. It results from the fermentation produced by the yeast, that the organic part is forced to rise to the surface of the liquor, from where it can be leavened and then used. In this process of separating organic matter from sewage sludge, by the action of yeasts, the organic matter, in the form of a sludge, which remains after the more or less clear liquor and the sand in the lower half of the container, were poured out of the container.

still contains a large amount of water. usually about 5 parts by weight of water per 1 part by weight of solid materials. The nature of the organic material sludge does not allow the removal of water from this sludge by filtration and the removal of this water by evaporation would necessitate the use of such a large quantity of fuel that the process would be commercially unenforceable.

The present invention relates to the treatment of the organic material sludge (obtained from sewage sludge by the action of yeasts such as those indicated above), so as to make a large part of the water contained in this sludge which can be removed, by filtration, and so as to finally obtain a product which can be dried with a moderate expenditure of fuel.

For this purpose, according to the present invention. an acid is added to the sludge of organic matter obtained by the action of yeasts on the sewage sludge, in order to stop the fermentation, then after a certain time, for example an interval of a few minutes , a basic calcium compound, for example calcium oxide or hydroxide, and then at least one carbonated, solid, powdered material, the mixture of the sludge and the various materials added thereto, being then subjected to vigorous stirring hot, preferably at a temperature of about 26 to 93 ° C, and then filtered while still hot.

The mixture can be brought to the required temperature by heating the slurry before or after the various ingredients mentioned above have been added to it.

Thanks to the treatment according to the present invention, a large quantity of water can be removed from the mixture by filtration, a residue can be obtained containing about 25 to 50% of water depending on the proportions of the water. various substances added to the sludge of organic matter obtained by the action of yeasts on the sewage sludge and according to the conditions under which the treatment is carried out.

The sewage sludge which is first subjected to fermentation with a yeast, as indicated above, is preferably that obtained by the sewage treatment, by the "activation" process. or "precipitation", consisting of a sludge which is more concentrated than the original sewage water from which it is obtained by treatment with suitable microorganisms or chemical precipitants, such as, for example, lime or ferric alumina.

Here is an example of treatment according to the process of the present invention of a sludge of organic matter obtained from a sewage sludge.

About 100 parts by weight of the slurry of organic material obtained is added. by the action of yeast on sewage sludge, as indicated above, 5 parts by weight of sulfuric acid, then after a short time, 5 parts by weight of lime (CaO) and then after another short interval of time, about 8 small pieces by weight of coke into small pieces (cinders) crushed enough to pass through a sieve of about 10 to 60 meshes per inch.

However, great variations can be made in the proportions of acid, calcium oxide or hydroxide and carbonaceous material to be added to the organic material sludge. For example, one can add to 100 parts of said sludge, 1 to 5 parts of an acid (eg sulfuric acid), 2 to 8 parts of calcium oxide or hydroxide and 2 to 10 parts of coke. pulverized or other solid carbonaceous material.

The organic matter sludge is heated, before or after the addition of the various ingredients, to a temperature of about 2.6 to 9.8 C and the hot mixture is then subjected to a very strong agitation, preferably by the injection of pressurized air, for example by blowing the mixture as it flows from the container which contains it, by means of a jet of air at a pressure of about 3.5 to 7 atmospheres, against a plate placed transversely to the flow of the hot mixture. This has the effect of breaking the skin or the membrane surrounding the particles of organic matter which are mainly present in the colloidal state in the sludge and thus making the separation of water from this sludge practicable.

The mixture, after having been well stirred, as just indicated, is filtered hot, preferably within the limits of the temperatures mentioned above, with a vacuum filter or a filter press. trays and frames being preferably used for this purpose. The easily filtered mixture and the cakes obtained contain, as mentioned above, an amount of water which will vary from about 25 to 50 of the total weight of the cake. The cakes are.

then air dried by exposure to hot air at a temperature of about 15 to 2%? C for a few days, for example three days, until the water contained in them has been reduced by evaporation to about 15-40%. Finally, when necessary, the cakes can be further dried by heating them to a higher temperature, if desired in vacuum dryers, until a product is obtained which does not contain more than about 15% water. Cakes which have been dried to the required content are suitable for use as a fertilizer, preferably after breaking or grinding them to a powdery state.

Thanks to the present invention, sewage sludge of the type indicated above can thus be treated simply and economically, so as to obtain a product containing a high percentage of nitrogenous matter. together with mineral constituents, which give it special value as a fertilizer. .
