Device for checking the earthing pipes in alternating current installations. The object of this invention is a device for automatic control of the protective earthing conduits which are customarily used in AC installations. This device is characterized in that the secondary rolling bearing of a transformer, the primary winding of which is connected to the network, is interposed, on the one hand, in the earthing pipe and, on the other hand ; in a circuit ensuring the entry into action of alarm and current interception devices, for an abnormal increase in voltage and for an abnormal increase in resistance, in the earthing pipe.
The drawing shows, by way of example, a diagram of one embodiment of the device for automatic control of the earthing pipe.
1, 2, 3 and 4 denote the neutral wire as well as the wires of the three phases of an alternating current pipe; of these conductors by tent, as usual, leads 5, 6, 7 and 8 passing through a main switch 9, to end in the devices to be supplied with current (motor 10, boiler 11, switch 12), while 13 and 19 form the earthing pipe.
The primary winding of a transformer 14 is coupled into phase 2 of the alternating current conductor, the winding of this transformer being calculated so that in the open state the voltage of 20 volts is not never exceeded, and that this voltage drops considerably below the indicated value, during a charge. The transformer 14 is constructed in such a way as to be guaranteed against short circuits, and even when there is a persistent short circuit of the secondary conductor, there is still no overheating.
To the terminals of the secondary wire of transformer 14 is attached the primary of one to the other transformer 15. In addition, this secondary winding is interposed in the earthing conduit by connecting it, on the one hand, to a water pipe 16 by the intervention of the pipe 19 and, on the other hand, to the pipe 13 passing through the devices 10, 11 and 12 which are inserted in the alternating current circuit. As for the secondary wire of transformer 15, it results in warning signals, that is, for example, lamps 17 and it passes through relays 18 which can operate the switching off of the main switch 9.
Under normal conditions, the earthing line 13 and 19 is only at a voltage of about 10 to 18 volts that the transformer 1.1 delivers to the secondary side. As the resistance of the pipes is very low, the transformer is almost short-circuited on the conductor side.
That being said, if for some reason an increase in the resistance of the pipe occurs, or if the pipe is even broken, the load on the transformer 14 will for the most part disappear. The voltage at the terminals of the secondary circuit will then reach a higher value, and the transformer 15 will certainly be supplied with current. This transformer will then deliver the current necessary for the warning lamp and for the automatic separation switch.
If it does not happen, as soon as the earthing pipe 13, 19 reaches, as a result of a contact with the earth of one of the devices put in circuit, a potential, with respect to the earth, exceeding 24 volts, this unwanted current will be transmitted to the secondary winding of transformer 14 as well as to the primary of transformer 15: The two transformers have the desired conformation so that the voltage then occurring in the secondary winding of the transformer 15 is sufficient for the actuation of the automatic separation switch as well as the warning lamp.
The secondary winding of the transformer 15 could moreover be subdivided to form two independent circuits, one of which would pass through the alarm devices and the other through the inter ception devices of the. current.
Finally, instead of using a second transformer 15, it would also be possible to directly use the secondary winding of the first transformer 14 to form the exciting circuit of the alarm and current interception devices.
