Description

Process for the manufacture of aromatic amide preparations of salicylic acids intended for the protection of textile products, seeds, etc. against fungal vegetations and preparation obtained by this process. British Patent No. 323579 of October 18, 1928 describes the use of aromatic amides of salicylic acids for the protection of textiles and other goods, seeds, materials, products, etc. against mildew and other fungal growths. It has been found that when these substances are used in the manner described in this patent, i.e. in suspension, it is difficult to ensure uniform protection of the materials thus treated.

This defect presents especially disadvantages when applying the method to fabrics. The free aromatic amide, for example salicylanilide, is obtained industrially in the form of a granular powder with which water does not mix easily to obtain a smooth paste; it is consequently difficult to handle with its application; it is mainly for this reason that uniform protection of the materials is not easily obtained, having found that the best results from the point of view of protection are obtained by applying the aromatic amide of salicylic acid to the free state and not in the form, for example, of a sodium salt.

The Applicant has observed, and the invention is based on this discovery, that these defects disappear when the aromatic amides of salicylic acid are used in the state of sufficiently fine division.

The invention consists of a process, and the resulting product, of grinding an aromatic amide of salicylic acid with water in the presence of a wetting agent such as, for example, soaps, high molecular weight sulfonated organic compounds, etc., until all particles of salicylic acid aromatic amide have linear dimensions of less than 2%.

The sulfonated condensation products of naphthalene and formaldehyde, as well as that known as bebene or cellulose sulfite syrup, are particularly effective wetting agents.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention, 25 parts of anhydrous salicylic anilide are mixed with 25 parts of water and 2.5 parts of a 50% solution of the sodium salt of a condensation product of the. formaldehyde with prepared naphthalene sulphonic acid, for example,

in the manner described in Example 1 of British Patent No. 7,137A913 of March 25, 1913, and the mixture is ground in a mechanical apparatus until the moment when the solid particles have, for the most part, dimensions of about 1 tc .
