Description

Vehicle wheel. The present invention relates to a vehicle wheel, characterized by a chain of elements arranged on a circumference and surrounded by an elastic casing intended to transmit to the elements the forces supported by the tire, these elements being interconnected in such a way. that, when a thrust occurring on the outside of the tire brings one element closer to the center of the wheel, at least one other element of the chain is moved away from it.

The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of a wheel according to the invention.

Fig. 1 is an exterior side view thereof with partial cutaway; Fig. 2 is a section along a diameter; Fig. 3 shows on a larger scale a cross section of the tire and the rim of the. wheel; Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the assembly of two elements, and FIGS. 5 to 7 are detail views. In the wheel shown in fig. 1, 1 represents the hub, 2 the chain elements and 3 the elastic envelope surrounding your elements.

The elements 2 are interconnected in a chain arranged on a circumference -1 concentric with the hub 1 of the wheel, the binding being effected by means of members which will be described later.

Each element 2 is constituted by a rectangular plate, the face opposite the center of the wheel of which is a cylinder portion, so that the chain of elements forms a cylinder having interruptions only between its elements.

It is obvious that the face of the elements opposite the center of the wheel could be flat, the chain then forming the lateral faces of a regular prism having interruptions at the intersections of its adjacent sides.

As shown in the section in fig. 2, the width or smaller dimension of the elements is placed parallel to the axis a-a of the wheel.

At each of its ends, each element is articulated to a link such as 5, connected to the link of another element by articulated members.

To better show how this connection takes place, reference is made to FIG. 4 which shows two ends of two elements 2 located to the left and to the right of the figure and articulated, the one on the right to a link 5, the one on the left to a link 6. It should be noted that the two elements 2 shown are connected between them by the organs which will be described, by their ends 7 and 8 placed facing one another without however being adjacent, given, as shown in the drawing, that two other elements 9 and 10 between the two elements 2 shown.

Elements 9 and 10 are shown in phantom and if the space intended for them in the drawing is not sufficient to accommodate them entirely, this is due to the fact that in the perspective shown, the chain of elements has was developed in a straight line instead of being on a circumference, which naturally has the effect of bringing the ends 7 and 8 of the two elements 2 closer together.

The components, all articulated, which connect the rods 5 and 6 consist of two elbow jacks 11 and 12, themselves connected to each other by a rod 13.

The pivots 14 and 15 of the two articulated levers are fixed, that is to say integral with the wheel, while all the other members are movable around these two fixed points.

From the foregoing description, it follows that by pressing in the direction of the arrow 16 on the end 7 of one of the elements 2 considered, one causes by means of the rod 5 a rotation of the elbow lever 11 around its pivot 14 in the direction of clockwise. This rotation in turn causes, by means of the connecting rod 13, a rotation in the same direction of the elbow lever 12 around the pivot 15, which finally will force, by means of the connecting rod 6, the end 8 of the other element 2 considered to rise in the direction of arrow 17. Conversely, by pressing on the end 8 of the left element, one will cause a lifting of the end 7 of the element of right.

The reference signs 5 to 17 of FIG. 4 have been transferred to the corresponding members of FIG. 1, so that the comparison of these two figures makes it possible to easily take into account the operation of the tire in FIG. 1.

If instead of lowering the end only of one element, i.e. bringing it closer to the center of the wheel, we move the whole element parallel to itself, so as to bring it closer lifting from the center of the wheel is caused, that is to say the distance from the center of the wheel from the ends of two elements located on either side of the element considered. Thus, if one brings the entire element 10 closer to the center, one causes the lifting, on the one hand, of the end 18 of one of the elements 2 and, on the other hand, of the end 19 another element 2.

It is obvious that when the wheel rolls on the ground and under the effect of the pressure of the ground against the tire of the latter, pressure which is transmitted to the elements by means of the elastic casing 3, the deformation of the whole chain becomes more complex, because it is no longer a single element which is required to move towards the center of the wheel, but for example one element and the adjacent end of the next, two elements, two elements and one or two adjacent ends of other elements, three elements, etc., which causes the center of so many elements or the ends of elements to move away from the center, so as to deform the tire approximately as deforms an ordinary pneumatic tire under the influence of the load it supports.

The deformation undergone by the tire described will be in some way limited or cushioned by the casing 3 which tends to keep the whole in a position of equilibrium or of rest corresponding to a wheel of perfectly circular shape.

In fig. 2, we can clearly see two links 19 and 20 articulated at the ends of two elements, as well as the corresponding angled levers, that is to say the lever 21 for the link 19 and the lever 22 for the link. 20.

Between these levers are the other levers 23 and 24 pivoting on the same axis as the levers 21 and 22 and serving to link its .d'other elements not visible in this figure. It appears, in fact, from an examination of the fi-. 1 that on each pivot such as 14 or 15 must be placed two elbow levers not integral with each other, that is to say, one of which at most can be integral with the pi vot, the other in front in all the cases be mounted freely on the latter. It is for this reason that the angled levers 11 and 12 shown in fig. 4 are of a different type, so that in the notch 25 of the lever 12 can be placed on the pivot 15 a lever similar to the lever 11, while on the pivot 14 and straddling the lever 11 can be placed use a lever similar to lever 12.

There is therefore on each pivot a pair (the levers not integral with each other, the total number of levers bent in front, therefore, also be even.

This entanglement of the rods and the bent levers also results in the difference in shape between the rods connecting the ends of the element to the bent lever, these rods possibly being similar depending on whether they are articulated to a type 11 lever or to a type 12 lever.

The rod 19 and the lever 21 in FIG. 2 are of the kind of the rod 5 and the lever 11 of FIG. 4, they are found on a larger scale in FIG. 3, while the connecting rod 20 and the lever 22 of FIG. 2 are of the kind of the rod 6 and the lever 12 of FIG. 4. A lever of the latter type is still visible at 26 in FIG. 3, this figure clearly showing how a pair of levers is supported by a common pivot 27.

From the examination, in fig. 1 it also follows that of each pair of levers placed on a common pivot, one of the levers is part of the connecting members of two ends facing each other of two elements separated by two other elements , the other lever forming part of the connecting members of two opposite ends of two elements adjacent to the first two.

Thus, of the two levers having the pivot 14 as a common pivot, one, the lever 11, forms part of the connecting members of the ends 7 and 8 placed opposite one another of two elements separated by the elements 9 and 10, while the other lever, 28, forms part of the connecting members between the end 29 of the element 10 adjacent to the element whose end 8 is controlled by the other lever and the end 19 of another element adjacent to the element whose end 7 is also dependent on the other lever, the two ends 19 and 29 facing each other and also separated by two intermediate elements.

As shown in fig. 1, one of the connecting rods of two levers, the rod 30, is of a special type shown in detail in FIGS. 6 and 7. This link, as shown in these figures, consists of two parts 31. and 32, one of which, 32, penetrates through a rod 33 into the other 31 and is held there by a washer 34, an elastic member, for example a rubber ring 85, tending to separate these two parts from one another, that is to say to extend the connecting rod.

By this arrangement, the rod is made elastically deformable in the direction of its length, it thus introduces into the chain formed by all the elements and their respective connecting members, an elastic member intended to absorb certain shocks by too much. sudden changes that these various organs would have to transmit to one another. The number of rods of this kind is not necessarily limited to one. We could even provide them all elastically deformable in their length.

In addition to this deformability it is up to. note that the part 32 itself consists of two members, a fork and a member 36 which is screwed, by means of a thread 37, in said fork. By turning this member 36 by means of a key acting on the square part shown in the drawing, the length of the rod can be adjusted, which allows, by lengthening it, to tighten the chain formed by the tire, once it is setup.

Fig. 5, which shows on a larger scale, a section through the casing 3 and two adjacent elements 2, shows how these elements can be secured against lateral displacement by providing the casing with internal bosses 38, that is to say say by having in said envelope housings partially surrounding the elements of the chain.

In fig. 3, we see how the feet of the articulated levers, the pivot 27 for example, are supported by a rim 39 in the form of a gutter partially surrounding the chain formed by the elements and their connecting organs, the bottom 40 of the gutter is located on the side of the hub, while its wings 41 and 42 are directed towards the outside of the wheel. This rim 39 adjusts, and this is visible in FIG. 2, on a false rim 13 integral with the hub and on which it is held by means of nuts 44. Therefore, the tire with its rim are demon tables in the manner of interchangeable automobile wheels.

The pivots such as 27 are therefore held in hand by the rim 39, in which radial grooves 45 are arranged for this purpose, arranged two by two facing each other inside the wings of the gutter. These grooves are open in the direction of the outside of the tire, the ends of the pivots being housed at the bottom of these grooves and the pivots held in this position by the tension of the chain of elements while turning the rim. The elastic casing 3 placed over the chain of elements delimits with the gutter of the rim and as shown in FIG. 3, a space 46 containing the chain with its connecting members. This envelope can be made of canvas rubber identically to the way in which pneumatic tires are made.

It is connected to the rim by beads 47 hooked under beads 48 forming a counterpart and arranged on the wings of the gutter forming said rim. A strapping formed by two rings 49 held by nuts 50 prevents the separation of the tire and the rim.

Assuming that the tire shown receives a very violent shock, which moves an element 2 until it brings it so to say between the wings of the gutter forming the rim, it could happen that the edge of these wings injures or cuts the envelope at a location such as 51, or else the element 2 in question strikes the pivot 27 located below it. To remedy these disadvantages, rings 52 of elastic material are placed on the edge of the wings of the gutter, inside the space determined by said gutter and the casing.

On the other hand, and in order to access links of the type shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, one can provide, opposite the latter, openings of the rim 39 large enough to allow the introduction of a key and the rotation of the member 36 of these rods. The opening or openings in question can be made in one of the flanges of the rim and be covered by closure plates or else be made in the bottom 40 of the gutter, their obstruction then taking place without further ado during that the rim 39 is mounted on the false rim 43.

It should also be noted that if in the example described the chain is composed of twelve elements and an equal number of pairs of bent levers, it could be made up of a larger or smaller number of elements, the number of pairs of angled levers obviously always corresponding to the number of elements chosen.

Finally, and this is one of the important points of the subject of the invention, it should be noted that no use is made of any sort, an organ which is always fragile and insecure.
