Inking mechanism for printing machines. This invention relates to an inking mechanism for printing machines, in which a flat bed or table is reciprocated below the printing cylinder, and which include a set of ink rollers serving to ink the cliché, the rotation of the latter changing direction each time the movement of the table changes direction.
The invention relates more particularly to the mechanisms in which use is made of two sets of rollers, one of which is used to divide the ink that it receives in an in termittent way from the inkwell and of which the other dis tribute the ink to the cliché, a device wedged between the two sets being provided to transfer the ink from one set to the other.
In such mechanisms as they are usually constructed and operated, the entire quantity of ink required for each proof is supplied by the dispenser rollers and distributed as a continuous film to the ink rollers during one of the runs. table races. since the change in the direction of rotation of the so-called ink rollers prevents ink from being transferred to them during the time that the surfaces are in contact. rotates in directions that do not allow ink transfer.
The mechanism according to the invention effects a more efficient distribution of the ink to the inking rollers and ensures a smoother uniformity of the film of ink distributed by these rollers on the. printing surface. This mechanism, which comprises a dispensing drum constantly rotating in the same direction and from which the ink, received from the first set of rollers, is transferred to the other set by a transfer roller.
oscillating, is characterized in that said oscillating transfer roller is in constant ink receiving relation with said dispensing drum and is brought into ink transfer relation with a roller of the second set of said ink rollers during the rotation of these last rollers in each direction.
Ink can be transferred from the inkwell to the first set of rollers by an oscillating transfer roller, and then be transferred by a second transfer roller to the dispensing drum disposed between the two sets of rollers. The ink transfer relationship between said transfer oscillating roller and a roller of the second set can take place by direct contact of the transfer oscillating roller alternately with either of two rolls of that set.
It is also possible to provide two cooperating transfer rollers which roll constantly in contact with one another and are brought alternately into contact with a first roller of the set of inking rollers, one of these two cooperating transfer rollers being cons. tally in contact with the distributor drum, which may advantageously have a circumference approximately equal to the length of the cliché.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, three embodiments of the object of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 are two elevational views showing a first embodiment of an inking mechanism at two different stages of work; Fig. 3 is an elevational view of a second execution fourme, and FIG. 4 is an elevational view of a third embodiment.
To the. fig. 1 of the drawing, A, B designate two sets of distributing and indentation rollers of the inking mechanism, A designating the set whose role is to divide the ink which it receives intermittently from the 'inkwell 1 and B the game which distributes the ink on the cliché lying on the table 2.
The ink is transferred from the pick-up roller 3 of the inkwell to set A by an oscillating transfer roller 4 which alternately comes into contact with the pick-up roller 3 and with a roller 5 which constitutes the first of the rollers of set A, this set further comprising the roller 6 called "last roller" and an intermediate roller 7 resting on - the two rollers 5 and 6. Of course, the set A could include a greater number of rolls than that shown.
The ink, suitably divided by the rollers 5, 6 and 7, is transferred to the equalizing distributor drum 8 (the circumference of which may advantageously be approximately equal to the length of the cliché) by a transfer roller 9 which does not touch the drum 8. only intermittently, but constantly rolls in contact with the "last roller" 6 and thus contributes greatly to the division of the ink by the set A.
The actual transfer of the ink to the drum takes place during a period which includes the change in direction of movement of the. table at one or each end of the stroke and at the times when the set of ink rollers or touchers B is not in effective contact with the set A.
The set of touching rollers B comprises, in the example considered, four touching rollers 10, 11, 12, 13 arranged in two pairs 10, 11 and 12, 13, two reciprocating rollers 14, 15 overcoming respectively the pairs 10, 11 and 12, 13 and intermediate rollers 16, 17 and 18 which are in mutual contact and establish effective rolling contact between the two reciprocating rollers. In addition to rollers 10-18, set B has an additional roll 19 which constantly rolls in contact with roll 14.
The ink transfer from drum 8 to set B takes place in two distinct phases. This result is obtained with the aid of two cooperating transfer rollers 20, 21 which constantly roll in contact with one another and are brought alternately into contact with the roller 19, one of them, 20 , being in permanent rolling contact with the drum 8.
The two transfer rollers 20, 21 are supported by arms 22 (arranged one on each side of the machine) which effect around the axis of the drum 8 a pivoting movement which is regulated by. such that during the uniform movement of the table in the direction of arrow a, the lower transfer roller 20 rolls in contact with the additional roller 19 as indicated by the solid lines in FIG. 1, and that, during the uniform movement of the table in the opposite direction, indicated by the arrow b,
the upper transfer roller 21 rolls both in contact with the additional roller 19 and in contact with the second transfer roller 20, as indicated by the dotted lines in FIG. 1.
At an intermediate phase of the movement of the transfer rollers 20, 21, these rollers are both out of contact with the additional roll 19 as shown in FIG. 2, and it is at this phase that the transfer roller 9 comes into contact with the drum 8 and supplies ink to this drum.
The embodiment shown in FIG. 3. does not differ from that of fig. 1 and 2 as regards the set of touching rollers B -and the device provided for transferring the ink from the drum to this set. Indeed, in the arrangement of FIG. 3,
there is only one transfer roller 20 which is arranged to alternately contact the roller 14 and the roller 16 and the latter occupies a slightly deflected position compared to the position of the roller 16 of FIG. 1 to allow this alternating contact to be made without having to resort to an additional roller such as roller 19 of FIGS. 1 and 2.
In the variant of FIG. 4, a more efficient distribution of the ink supplied to the set of form rollers B is ensured due to the fact that the equalizing drum 8 continuously rotates in contact with the set of distribution rolls A.
In fig. 4, this arrangement has been shown together with a set of contact rollers. 8 such as that of FIG. 3, but it is understood that the drum $ could be kept in constant contact with the set of distributor rolls A when the set of contact rollers B and the transfer rollers 20, 21 are constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2..
According to the arrangements mentioned last, the ink supplied intermittently from the inkwell 1 to the set of distribution rollers A by the transfer roller 4 is continuously divided by the distribution rollers, the equalizing drum 8 and the transfer roller 20 (or the transfer rollers 20, 21); and the uniformity of the. The ink pellet transferred to the set of the rollers B is maintained more effectively than is possible when the equalizer drum 8 receives the ink from the rollers only intermittently.
It will be noted that, in all the previously described arrangements, the transfer of ink to the touching or inking rollers occupies only short periods of the cycle and makes it possible to satisfactorily carry out the lamination of the ink by the rollers. distributors for correspondingly increased periods of time.
