Description

Process for the preparation of formic acid from formates. The main patent relates to a process for the production of formic acid from formates, which is characterized in that formates are mixed with dilute nitric acid at low temperature in the presence of buffer substances, e.g. B. formates, urea or amines, treated, and the ent formed formic acid from the reaction mixture, z. B. by extraction or fractional distillation wins.

It has now been found that free formic acid can be obtained even in the absence of buffer substances by reacting formates with nitric acid if the formates are at low tempera ture, eg. B. at 0 to -200 with the nitric acid completely reacted and the resulting free formic acid also extracted in the cold by means of a solvent. Example: 390 grams of potassium formate are slurried with 645 grams of water and mixed with 610 grams of 62 above nitric acid while cooling between 00 and -100 0 .

After the conversion has taken place, the formic acid set free is extracted with butyl formate. With a normal continuous extraction or with an approximately 8-10 single extraction with the same amount of butyl formate, practically all formic acid, i.e. 95-98% of the acid, can be extracted.

The separation of the formic acid from the extraction agent then takes place, as usual, by fractional distillation.
