Description
Process for the preparation of a mixture of mixed anhydrides between boric acid and organic acids. The main patent No. 1.66213 relates to a process for the preparation of a mixed anhydride between boric acid and stearic acid, which is characterized in that a mixture of 1 mole of boric acid and 3 moles of stearic acid is treated with dehydrating agents.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a mixture of mixed anhydrides from boric acid and a mixture of fatty acids containing caprylic acid, capric acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid, from a naturally occurring fat or oil,
according to which mixtures of boric acid and the fatty acid mentioned are treated emically with dehydrating agents, 3 moles of fatty acids also being reacted for every 1 mole of boric acid. Such fatty acids are those obtainable from coconut oil and palm kernel fat.
The anhydrides of lower fatty acids, such as acetic anhydride, or acid chlorides, such as, for example, thionyl chloride, phosphorus trichloride or phosphorus pentachloride, can be used as dehydrating agents.
Example: 204 grams of the fatty acid mixture contained in coconut fat is boiled together with 1 gram of boric acid and 200 gram of acetic acid anhydride at the reflux.
After the reaction has ended, the acetic acid formed and the excess acetic anhydride are distilled off in vacuo while passing hydrogen through. The product obtained is a mixture of the hydrides of fatty acids with 8 to 18 carbon atoms and boric acid. It is a colorless, moisture-sensitive mass that is liquid at normal temperature and which only solidifies with a long delay.
The concentrated acetic acid that accumulates in quantitative terms can be reprocessed to anhydride or used in another way using the usual method. One can also proceed in such a way that the acetic acid formed is distilled off during the reaction.
The anhydride mixture obtained by the above process can serve as a starting material for the production of further valuable compounds. For example, it can be reduced to the corresponding alcohol mixtures through catalytic hydrogen deposition.
