Description

Circuit arrangement for regulating the amplification of a amplifier tube. The invention relates to a circuit arrangement for controlling the gain of an amplifier tube with at least six electrodes.

In the previously known arrangements, the gain control method was used to influence the idle bias of the control grid, so that different values of the tube slope are decisive for the gain depending on the choice of the operating point. There are also scarf lines have been proposed in which the voltage of a special grid between the control and the anode control grid is changed ver. The effect of these circuits is based on shifts in the anode current control grid voltage characteristic curve parallel to the grid voltage axis as a function of the voltage on the control grid.

With the control grid voltage kept constant, a change in slope is only achieved if the operating point lies in a curved part of the characteristic from the start:

. Automatic compensation of volume fluctuations caused by changing the reception amplitude (e.g. by fading) in wireless reception arrangements was achieved by regulating the amplification of the high-frequency amplifier in front of the demodulator as a function of the carrier wave amplitude.

However, arrangements have also been proposed in which the sensitivity of the demodulator itself is regulated as a function of the carrier wave amplitude. According to these methods, which are based on curved tube characteristics, with regard to the permissible distortion factor, regulation is generally only possible within relatively small limits.

In contrast, in the circuit according to the invention, the change in slope required for regulating the gain is brought about by rotating the tube characteristic relating to the control grid around its intersection with the abscissa axis as a function of the voltage on a control grid. This gives the opportunity to change the steepness of the characteristic curve for the amplification control and, in spite of this, only use straight parts of the characteristic curve for the amplification. As a result, the distortion factor is small and practically inde pendent of the voltage set in each case.

A tube with six or more electrodes is used in such a way that one grid electrode is supplied with the voltages to be amplified and another grid electrode with a voltage that effects the amplification control. Both between the two grid electrodes just mentioned, as well as between that of the two grids and the anode, which are closer to the anode, a grid electrode that is held at a constant positive potential should be provided.

For example, can. In the case of a four-grid tube, the circuit is designed in such a way that the first grid, counted from the cathode, serves as a control grid, the second and fourth as screen grids are kept at constant potential and the third grid (auxiliary grid) has zero or zero rest potential the cathode receives negative voltage.

The steepness of the characteristic, that is to say the ratio of the change in the anode current to the change in the control grid voltage, can then be changed by setting the voltage of the third grid (auxiliary grid). The presence of the fourth grid, which acts as a screen grid, avoids the annoying side effects, such as decreasing internal resistance as the auxiliary grid voltage becomes negative.

If necessary, the number of grids can be increased, for example by providing a so-called catching grid between the fourth grid and the anode for the purpose of suppressing secondary emissions.

In the drawing, three embodiment examples of circuits according to the invention are shown.

For example, if you run one with. four tubes provided with grids in a grid rectifier circuit (audion) (Fig. 1), a low-frequency component occurs at the control grid G1, which is amplified in the usual way by the electrode system.

A change in sensitivity now takes place in that the DC voltage component occurring at the grid resistance Rg of the control grid is completely or partially pressed onto the auxiliary grid G3 which changes the steepness of the anode current control grid voltage characteristic.

As the carrier wave amplitude increases, both the low frequency amplitude at the control grid and the DC voltage component increase. The consequence is a decrease in the steepness of the anode current control grid voltage characteristic curve, so that with suitable dimensioning the low-frequency output voltage can be kept approximately constant.

The same principle can be applied with minor changes if the rectification route in a separate rectifier (diode, crystal detector, etc.) follows (Fig. 2). The rectifier arrangement Gd in turn supplies both a low frequency component and a DC voltage component, of which the former is pressed onto the control grid G1 and the latter onto the auxiliary grid G3 which changes the steepness of the characteristic.

So that the auxiliary grid 3: only the direct voltage component resulting from the demodulation of the received oscillations, but not the modulation-frequency fluctuations, is impressed, this grid is connected to the rectifier via a filter circuit that keeps the modulation frequencies away from this grid, e.g. stood from a series resistance and a shunt capacitor can exist.

In the case of an anode rectifier circuit (FIG. 8), the following mode of operation would result: The control grid G receives a negative bias voltage Eg, so that the operating point is at the lower bend of the characteristic curve, so anode rectification occurs.

In the anode circuit, a resistor R is switched on directly at the cathode; the voltage drop occurring at .die sem resistance serves as a bias voltage for the auxiliary grid G3 which changes the steepness of the characteristic curve. As the carrier wave amplitude increases, the anode direct current increases, the voltage drop across the cathode resistance increases, the steepness of the characteristic curve is reduced by the influence of the negative auxiliary grid voltage,

so that, given suitable dimensioning, it is possible to keep the low-frequency output amplitude constant.
