A method of manufacturing ethyl alcohol. The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of ethyl alcohol by direct combination of ethylene with steam.
It is well known that water vapor and ethylene combine to form ethyl alcohol at high temperatures and in the absence of substances which have a catalytic effect on the reaction, but the amount of alcohol thus formed is negligible. Several catalysts have been proposed for use in this reaction; such as for example thoria (Th02) or phos phoric acid on charcoal.
In addition, main patent No. 171358 has disclosed a process for the manufacture of ethyl alcohol according to which the combination of ethylene and water vapor is carried out at an elevated temperature and in the presence of a catalyst. catalyst consisting at least in part of a compound of phosphoric acid with at least one metal of the iron group, belonging to the fourth period of the periodic system, the total amount of phosphoric acid, free or combined, being in excess over that necessary for the formation of the neutral orthophosphate of the metal or metals employed, but not exceeding however (calculated as HOP04)
95% of the total amount of the phosphoric compound (s).
It has been found that in the catalyst, said metal can be replaced by boron, all the other operating conditions remaining the same.
The process which is the subject of the present invention is therefore characterized in that this combination is carried out at an elevated temperature and in the presence of a catalyst, this catalyst being constituted at least in part by a compound of phosphoric acid with boron. , the total amount present of phosphoric acid, free or combined, being in excess of that required for the formation of neutral boron orthophosphate, but not however yielding (calculated as 83P04)
95% of the total amount of the phosphoric compound (s).
To obtain the compound forming at least in part the catalyst, boron or one of its etchable derivatives, for example boric anhydride, can be attacked with phosphoric acid. The composition obtained can form the catalyst by itself or else it can be placed on an inert support or mixed with such a support, the latter not comprising such licious compounds.
The catalysts thus obtained can be used as such in the solid state, in the form of granules, pellets, tablets, etc.
The support can be impregnated with the composition in fluid form and then dried. The catalysts can be employed alone or in combination with other materials which have a favorable catalytic effect on the combination of steam with ethylene.
The reaction can be carried out advantageously at temperatures between 100 and 3000 C, but it is preferred to employ temperatures above 150 ° C. It is possible to use atmospheric pressure or higher pressures up to at 250 atmospheres, but it is preferable to employ pressures not exceeding 100 atmospheres.
In the practical execution of the process, a mixture of ethylene and steam is brought into contact with the catalyst. The resulting vapors can then be condensed to obtain, on the one hand, the ethyl alcohol produced and all the untransformed water vapor, and, on the other hand, the untransformed ethylene, which can be returned to the process to be processed again.
The process can be applied to pure ethylene or to mixtures of ethylene with other gases, the latter not reacting under the conditions of the process, for example ethane, methane and the like.
The following examples illustrate the way in which the invention can be carried out and the nature of the results obtained Example 1: It was baked in an oven (air oven) at 2000 C and then ground into granules, a catalyst prepared by evaporating a molecule of boric anhydride with 2.2 words of phosphoric acid. Ethylene was passed through 100 mB of this catalyst at a rate of 3.12 liters per hour, measured at normal temperature and pressure, and mixed with 1.5 times its vapor volume.
A conversion of ethylene to ethyl alcohol of 0.36% was then obtained.
Example 2: Using the same catalyst as in Example 1, was passed at a total pressure of 20 atmospheres and per hour 400 liters of ethylene measured at temperature and pressure normal and mixed with water vapor in molecular proportions of 4 months of ethylene to 1 mol of vapor. The conversion of ethylene to ethyl alcohol was 0.440% and the hourly alcohol yield was 3.70 grams. The alcohol was obtained as a 5.6% condensate.
