Lattice-controlled discharge vessel with gas or steam filling and liclite arc or arc-like discharge. The invention relates to grid-controlled discharge vessels with gas or vapor filling and arc or arc-like discharge and aims to make the control process of disruptive influences, for example thermal or electrostatic 'nature inde- pendent, in such vessels.
Discharge vessels of the type described above contain an ionizable medium, for example, as a gas filling. Mercury or argon, at a gas pressure that is sufficiently high to sustain a arc-like discharge. In the case of such a discharge, the vessels generally have a level or slightly negative voltage characteristic.
The discharge current cannot be directly controlled in these vessels with an arc-like discharge. The grid can only regulate the onset of discharge and, once it has started, has no influence at all. The discharge does not go out again until the anode voltage disappears. When an alternating voltage is applied to the tube, the grid can cause the onset of the discharge in every positive half-wave of the alternating supply voltage and thus determine the part of this positive half-wool to be passed through. In this way, control of the mean value of the discharge current intensity is achieved.
In the previously known Entladungsge vessels, the grid is usually located between the cathode and anodes in the Entladungsbaliir that the formation of the field required to control the electron flow is guaranteed over a large width of the discharge path. As a result, the grid is quite large in most cases. - It has been shown that the control process in the tube is not only sensitive to temperature due to the position and size of the grid, but is also adversely affected by low currents that constantly pass between cathode and anode.
Furthermore there is also that which evaporates from the cathode. Emitting material precipitating on the control grid gives rise to faults. If the grid is not sufficiently shielded from the heat emitted by the cathode and anode and becomes hot, the incident emitting material can give rise to an electron emission, which can counteract the control effect determined by the corresponding charging of the grid.
The capacitance between the control grid and one of the anodes or the cathode can, although it is relatively small, affect the staring process in a detrimental way, since the electrostatic induction between these different electrodes BEZW when there is a sudden high voltage change. a change in the conductivity of the vessel or connected neighboring vessels can be very significant.
If a discharge vessel is ignited in an arrangement of several tubes by applying a certain voltage to the control grid, the voltage on the discharge vessel, which may be very high, instantly drops to a relatively small value of approximately 10 to 20 volts. This sudden voltage change often generates a voltage surge in one or more other connected vessels, which causes these vessels to ignite prematurely or the grids to not work properly at all, precisely because of the electrostatic induction between the grids and the associated main electrodes.
For proper control of the discharge current, it is necessary that the discharge actually ignited by a certain potential on the grid at a fixed point within the positive half-wave, or at all at a fixed point in time, regardless of the current thermal and electrical state of the discharge vessel becomes.
According to the invention, the most precise possible control of the discharge current is achieved by providing an auxiliary grid connected to a control potential in the discharge vessel, in addition to the control grid, in order to eliminate disruptive influences on the control process. The auxiliary grid can be designed so that it shields the main grid thermally or electrically and is then able to control the discharge current by means of the main grid practically completely independent of the instantaneous thermal or. make electrical condition of the pipe.
Another advantage of the auxiliary grid is that the discharge vessel can be made so sensitive by the auxiliary grid that it responds to the slightest energy fluctuations in the main grid circuit.
The auxiliary grid can either be arranged between the cathode and the main grid in such a way that the main grid cannot be "seen" from the cathode and is thus largely protected against the heat emitted by the cathode and also against any evaporated emitting material. If the main grid is to be shielded from an anode field that is too strong, it is advisable to arrange the auxiliary grid between the anode and the main grid.
In many cases it is useful to form the auxiliary grid from several parts in such a way that one part lies between the main grid and anode and another part between the cathode and the main grid. It is particularly advantageous to give the auxiliary grid the shape of a cylinder surrounding the discharge path and within this Zy Linders perpendicular to the discharge path to arrange two cross plates between which the introduced through a side opening in the Zylin dermantel, only small Steuergit ter is attached.
It is particularly advantageous to provide the (one or more) plates of the auxiliary grid lying transversely to the discharge path with only one central opening, in such a way that the discharge between the cathode and anode is compressed into a narrow path. so that a relatively small, only little energy consuming main grid is necessary for control.
To explain the invention, exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are shown in iler drawings. Fig. J shows, partly in section and partly in plan view, a discharge vessel with the associated anode and control circuits; Fig. 2 shows a part of the grid arrangement in perspective and in Fig. 3 is a further circuit arrangement with a discharge vessel according to the invention is presented.
In Fig. 1. 1. means the wall of a discharge vessel with a pinch foot 2. 3. In the vessel, a hot cathode -1 #, a control grid 5 and an anode 6 are arranged. The cathode is indirectly heated and has a heating element 7 enclosed in the cylinder 8 and radial walls 9. A metal cylinder surrounds these walls and thus forms a number of cavities which are coated with emitting material, for example an alkaline earth oxide .
The cathode is carried by the pinch foot by means of stiff wires 10, a few of which can serve as power supplies at the same time. A heat shield 11, preferably made of metal, can be attached to one of these conductors in order to protect the pinch foot from the heat emitted from the cathode.
The anode 6 has. the shape of a flat piece of metal, bent upwards at the edge, and is carbonized or coated with carbon in some other way. The anode feeder 12 carries the anode and is melted into the glass vessel at the opposite end to the cathode. The control grid 5 consists of a small metal spiral or a plurality of relatively thin wire rings which are held together in the longitudinal direction by rigid wires 13. In the embodiment shown in the figure, each ring of the wire spiral is welded to the wires 13.
The control grid has a relatively small diameter, but is so large that it covers practically the entire discharge passing between the cathode and anode. The control grid is held by a rigid in the glass arm 15 fused power supply 1.1.
The discharge vessel contains an inert gas such as argon or a vapor such as cesium or mercury with a gas pressure between 1 and 500 microns.
According to the illustrated example of the invention, a further electrode is now arranged in the vessel. This has the shape of a relatively long cylinder 16 made of conductive material and extends over the entire length of the discharge path and further over the anode and the electron exit surface of the cathode. The cylinder has essentially a larger diameter than the cathode and the anode and is supported on one side by a number of support struts 17, which are attached to a clamp 18 at the foot? are attached, wear ge. At the other end of the cylinder carries various insulators 19 made of aluminum oxide (A1..03), which support it on the retracted wall of the vessel.
The cylinder 16 is provided approximately in the middle with an opening 20 which is preferably rectangular and through which the power supply 14 leads ge. The cylinder cavity is divided by plates 21 of metal or other conductive material such as carbon. The control grid 5 is arranged centrally between the two plates 21, 21. The plates 21 have openings 22, preferably of the same plan as the grid 5, which is round in the case shown. The plates 21 are attached to the cylinder 16 and are directly electrically connected to it. In many cases, however, it is advantageous to isolate them electrically from the cylinder and provide them with special control voltages.
The diameter of the openings 22 is somewhat smaller than the diameter of the control grid, so that neither the cathode nor the anode can be "seen" from the grid. At the lower end of the cylinder 16 is closed by an isolating plate 23, which rests directly on the outer cathode cylinder.
Auodenstromkreis and the control circuits of the discharge vessel are fed from a transformer with the primary winding 24. Of the three secondary windings 25, 26, 27 - # ÄTicklung 2 7 is used to feed the cathode heater (. The) @Ticklung 25 is placed on the grid 5 via conductors 28, 29. A potentiometer 30 connects the two ends of the winding 25 and by means of the slidable con tact 31 both to one end 32 of the primary winding 24 and to the point 33 of the cathode lead connected to who the.
In the conductor 28 is a photocell 34 or some other control arrangement, while in the conductor 29 as a further link of the bridge arrangement, a high resistance Wi resistor 35 is arranged. The anode 6 is connected via a load 36, here as a resistor, to the end 3 7 of the primary winding 24.
The auxiliary electrode 16 is connected to the middle secondary winding 26 via a circuit consisting of a resistor 37, a capacitor 38 and a potentiometer 39. - By using the auxiliary electrode in the discharge vessel, the above-mentioned disruptive thermal or electrical effects on the control process are switched off and the discharge vessel becomes so sensitive that the discharge is triggered by very weak photocurrent pulses .
By arranging the control grid 5 in the middle part of the cavity of the cylinder 16 it is achieved that the heat radiated from the anode and the cathode is shielded from the control grid by the transverse plates 21. The grid is therefore essentially insulated from a thermal point of view and cannot get so warm that it becomes emissive.
The small round openings 22 in the transverse plates 21, as well as the proximity of the surrounding metal wall of the cylinder 16, force the arc-like discharges to form a sharply defined cylindrical column between the cathode and anode and thereby enable the control grid to exploit the optimum of its controllability . The discharge goes through the cylindrical opening of the control grid without it becoming particularly hot. Because of the small extent of the arc, the grid can also be relatively small. It does not necessarily have to surround the discharge, but can also be designed as a flat plate and is then conveniently arranged very close to one side at the opening 22.
The size of the control grid 5 depends on how strongly the discharge is compressed by the auxiliary grid 16. In any case, it can be kept smaller than the previously used grids, which means that the grid current is also significantly reduced. The electrostatic influences between the anode and cathode on the one hand and the grid on the other hand are thus also reduced.
As noted above, the main grid 5 is slightly larger in diameter than the openings 22, so that active material evaporating from the cathode cannot reach the main grid 5. This largely prevents the main grating from becoming emissive. The grid 5 is shielded by the transverse plates 21 against the electrostatic lines of force of the cathode and anode. The cylindrical part 16 of the auxiliary electrode is used to make the external lines of force harmful.
Instead of the drawn in the figure, consisting of the resistor 37 and the capacitor 38 auxiliary electrode circuit can of course also other circuits that can be fed for example with AC voltages or DC voltages or both, ver used. In the arrangement shown in the figure, the capacitor is used to maintain a fixed voltage difference between the cathode and anode. In many cases. However, it is also advantageous, especially if the vessel is fed with AC voltage, to apply an AC voltage to the auxiliary grid 16, which can then also be taken from the transformer feeding the anode circuit.
The arrangement is then expediently made so that the phase of the auxiliary grid voltage can be shifted. Often it is also he wishes to put cathode potential directly on the auxiliary grid, in which case the two electrodes can be directly connected within the vessel.
The discharge vessel shown in Fig. 1 has the advantage that it can be used to control very strong currents through the weak currents of a photocell without the need for special amplifier arrangements. If the discharge vessel is fed with alternating current, and if it is a matter of controlling the discharge current strength by igniting the discharge at certain points before the positive half-wave, then the vessel delivers, because of the arrangement of the special auxiliary electrode, regardless of temperature and electrical influences fixed control voltage with a constant average current.
The control process is also not influenced by sudden high potentials occurring at the anode if the auxiliary grid is controlled in the correct manner. maintains its predetermined voltage difference to the cathode.
In Fig. 3, a circuit for an E_ut- charge vessel according to the invention is Darge, in which the auxiliary grid is also connected to a variable voltage. 1 be indicates the discharge vessel, which has the cathode 4, shown only schematically, also the control grid 5 and the auxiliary grid 16 located between the control grid 5 and anode. The electrodes can also be arranged in the same way as is shown with reference to FIG. The electrodes 5 and 16 form a double grid within which the electrostatic field of one grid can be influenced by the other.
The auxiliary grid 16 is placed via a current limiting resistor 40 to the Ro tor of a phase shifter (Selsyn motor 41). The control grid 5 can be connected in the same way to another phase shifter arrangement (Selsyn motor 43) via the current limiting resistor 42. The transformer 44 serves to heat the cathode 4. The AC voltage for the anode circuit of the discharge vessel with an arc-like discharge can be taken directly from the network. The load is represented by a resistor 45.
The phase of the two grid voltages can be shifted in the middle of the two phase shifters. By setting the phase relationships between the two alternating control voltages in a special way, the discharge vessel can be ignited, namely periodically in every positive half-wave of the alternating supply voltage and thus a current of a certain mean value flows. The auxiliary grid 16 has the effect that the control of the current intensity through the main grid 5 is completely independent of the current electrical and thermal state of the discharge vessel.
The control by the grid 5 is so precise and so sensitive that the control energy needs to be extremely low, of the order of magnitude only a few microwatts. So there are only very small phase shifter arrangements not manoeuvrable, which also results in energy savings in the arrangements shown, for example.
The auxiliary electrode 16 in the Ausführungsbei shown in the drawing does not need to be cylindrical and surround the discharge path, but can also be any other shape. In the case of a cylindrical electrode arrangement, in which the cathode is located inside the arrangement, surrounded by the other electrodes, the auxiliary grid expediently consists of two cylindrical conductors, which can also be electrically connected to one another.
The cylinders must then have openings for the passage of electrons and positive ions, and are expediently arranged on both sides of the main control electrode. The size of the openings in the auxiliary electrode cylinders is relatively small, so that extensive shielding of the main grid against the cathode and the anode is guaranteed.
As in the case of the Entladungsge vessel according to Fig. 1, the discharge through the openings of the auxiliary grille is pushed together and the control of the current intensity by means of the main grille is made easier. Here, too, all the advantages of the discharge vessel shown in FIG. 1 occur both in thermal and electrical terms and with regard to the shielding against emitting material evaporating from the cathode.
It is often an advantage not to see any special auxiliary electrodes in the vessels, but instead to make the tube wall itself from metal and design it as an auxiliary grid. This auxiliary grid then completely surrounds the discharge path along with the other electrodes, anodes, cathode and main grid and effectively shields the discharge path from external electrical interference fields. In this case too, BEZW can between the main grid and the anode. the cathode grid cross plates be provided for shielding. The transverse grid plates are then in contact with the vessel wall, which is connected to a potential.
