Process for the production of surface alloys by diffusion. It is known that metals in the solid state, depending on their affinity for one another, diffuse into one another when they are exposed to heat together under certain conditions. In fact, the diffusion happens when the superficial object to be alloyed, for example solid iron, and the solid diffusion material, for example chromium, nickel, tungsten, manganese, silicon, or their mixtures or alloys, in close metallic Be brought into contact and at the same time the effect of oxygen is switched off.
The known diffusion processes therefore always work in a neutral atmosphere, be it in a vacuum or in a hydrogen atmosphere. The close contact of the metals is brought about in different ways: For example, by wrapping the object in. The powder of the substance that is supposed to diffuse, by spraying the metal powder or by galvanic over pulling the object with the diffusion metal or. -metals. The invention relates to a surface alloying process by diffusion in neutral molten salt. The neutral molten salt represents an oxidation-free medium, which enables diffusion in whatever form the metals are brought into contact with one another.
The process is most simple if the diffusion substance is added to the molten salt in powder form. The object, the surface of which is to be alloyed, is immersed in this molten salt and exposed to corresponding degrees of heat for a certain time. The powder particles of the diffusion substance are mobile in the melt, which causes a completely uniform and constantly renewed contact of the object to be alloyed with the diffusion substance. The intensity of the diffusion can be increased by mechanically moving the salt bath.
Furthermore, the substance to be diffused can be applied to the object in another way, for example by spraying or as a galvanic coating, and then subjected to diffusion in the salt bath.
The molten salt as a neutral medium in the diffusion process has the advantage of easy technical usability in contrast to the previously known processes. The object to be alloyed on the surface can be hung in the liquid salt bath and remains in the hanging state during the entire process, if distortions due to displacement are to be avoided.
In the process with metal powder, the concentration of diffusion metal in the melt can be constantly controlled and permanently maintained in the most favorable composition, whereby a greater depth effect is achieved.
The diffusion creates a surface on the object to be refined which has entered into an alloy with the base metal, so that the refined layer cannot be detached due to mechanical stress or heat.
With the new process of diffusion bathing in salt, which is similar in its simplicity to the electrolytic process, every object that can be surface alloyed by diffusion can be given a surface suitable for its use in an easily applicable manner, which results in a large saving of the usually expensive ones Alloy components results. For example, a steel object of any shape can be easily provided with a valuable surface.
