Description

   La fig.   1    est une vue schématique en coupe d'une première forme d'exécution de l'appareil ;
 La fig. 2 représente la deuxième forme d'exécution de l'appareil ;
 La fig. 3 est une vue en bout, à plus grande échelle, d'une partie de l'appareil représenté sur la fig. 2 ;

4. Un certain nombre de mâchoires 53 disposées radiale
ment sont montées à coulissement dans des
rainures radiales de 1'enveloppe 49. Les mâ-
choires 43 portent des ergots 54 sur lesquels
sont montés des galets 55 disposés dans une
rainure-came 56 du disque 50 ayant la forme
 représentée sur la fig. 3.

 on opère.

Method and apparatus for the manufacture of sealing bars for welding
 electric arc.

The present invention relates to a method and to an apparatus for the manufacture of sealing bars for electric arc welding.

The weld bars to which the invention is applied are preferably 30 to 50 cm long and comprise a fusible metal core to which has been applied a covering or a sheath, for example of a substance forming a slag and / or releasing gas, for reasons well known in the art.

It is already known to apply a coating to sealing bars, by extrusion, that is to say extrusion under pressure. However, an end part of the core of these sealing bars must remain uncovered so that the bar can be fixed in a suitable support, so as to have good electrical contact between this metal core and the support of the sealing bar. solder, which would not be possible if the seal bar was taken or fixed by a covered part of it.

Heretofore, it has been the practice to make coated solder bars by continuously passing a wire or fusible bar of great length through an extruder capable of applying a uniform coating to this bar or wire. continued.

After the coating has been so applied, the complex long bar is either first dried and then cut into sections of suitable lengths or first cut in this way and then dried. Regardless of the procedure which has been used heretofore in applying the overlap to the long bar, considerable difficulty has been encountered in removing the overlap on one end of the metal core of the sections to obtain the result indicated above. .

If the continuous yarn with an extruded cover is cut into suitable lengths before drying, the plastic and fibrous nature of the cover prevents the liner from being able to be terminated evenly at both ends of the bar and the continuous yarn with this cover adherent, is dried before being cut into chunks, the fragile nature of the cover is likely to result in a tear which prevents the sheath from being evenly terminated at the end of the metal core.

In any case, in any of the processes indicated above, great difficulties have been encountered which the present invention aims to avoid.

The process according to the invention for the preparation of sealing bars formed of a metal core covered with a coating leaving the core free at one end, over part of its length, is characterized in that the coating is formed on metal bars already having the length of the bar to be obtained, and this by passing these bars successively through an extruding press, so as to place an adherent covering on them.

The liner can be formed over only part of the length of the bar leaving the end free. It can also be formed over the entire length of the bar, the end then being released from this coating.

The apparatus according to the invention for carrying out this method is characterized by an extruding press set up to put a coating on metal bars caused to pass successively through this press and by means acting automatically so that the successive bars have no coating over part of their length, at one end. A part of the coating of the metal core can either be omitted at the beginning during the extruding operation, or be removed shortly after the extruding operation, so that when the bars with their covering applied by extrusion come out of the device, they have the desired length and that the covering is removed on part of the core, near one end.

In the accompanying drawing are shown, by way of example, two embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention.

   Fig. 1 is a schematic sectional view of a first embodiment of the apparatus;
 Fig. 2 shows the second embodiment of the apparatus;
 Fig. 3 is an end view, on a larger scale, of part of the apparatus shown in FIG. 2;
Fig. 4 is a detail on a larger scale, part in section and part in elevation, of part of the apparatus shown in FIG. 2.

The apparatus shown in FIG. 1 comprises a store 1 containing uncoated sealing bars, cut into sections of desired length and which it is desired to cover or coat. A device 2 enables the uncovered sealing bars to be brought one after the other to the extruding machine 3. A device 4 automatically removes the covering from the sealing bar in the vicinity of one of its ends. at the same time as the coating is extruded on the bar and in such a way that part of the covering of the bars, when they come out of the machine, is removed on one end for the reason which has been indicated above above.

Store 1 has a vertically arranged hopper which, at its lower end, is just wide enough to allow a vertical row of uncovered bars to descend into this hopper. The bottom of the hopper 1 opens into a conveyor tube 5 which is a little wider than the sealing bars on which we operate.

In the tube 5 slides a supply bar 6 fixed at its left end to the piston rod 7 of a double-acting cylinder 8. The cylinder 8 is provided with a control slide 9 of well-known construction which is capable of controlling the fluid supplied to cylinder 8, so as to move the piston therein, as well as the rod 7 cooperating with it, alternately in both directions.

The limit of movement of the rod 7 to the left is such that the right end 10 of the rod 6 arrives just to the left of the bottom of the magazine 1. When the feed rod 6 is in this position, a seal bar 11 falls into the supply tube 5. The displacement of the rod 6 to the right causes the displacement of a single sealing bar in the tube 5 and through the machine 3 to apply the coating or covering.

The coating machine 3 comprises a box 12 with an opening on the left side to receive the rods brought in by the tube
power supply 5 and, on the right side, it is
provided with an opening 13 whose diameter
is bigger than that of penny bars
hard on which we operate, twice
the thickness of the covering you want
apply by extrusion on the bars. The
material 14 to be extruded onto the rods and which
can have any suitable composition, is
brought to box 12 by a conveyor screw
15 who is able to exercise some
pressure on the enclosed material 14, so
to push back a uniform sheath of this ma
through opening 13, around the bars of
 solder passing through this opening.

Near the exit end of the ma
china extruder 3 is the device 4
whose role, as said above, is
remove part of the covering that
was previously applied to the bar of
welding. The apparatus 4 comprises a rod
back and forth movement 16 rise in
the alignment of the outlet opening axis
13 of the extruding machine 3, so that
the rods coming out of this machine come
abut against the left end of the rod
   16. At its right end, the rod 16
goes through an envelope 17 in which is
housed a spring 18 and which carries a coil 19
 electromagnet.

A collar 20 attached to the rod
16 door against the end of the spring 18,
so that this spring pushes the elastic rod 16
 cally to the left.

On the envelope 17 are fixed two che
mins-cams 21 extending from the end side
moth left of rod 16 and, preferably
rence, having the outline shown in the drawing. On a transverse head 22 fixed to the shaft 16, pivot support arms 23 which at their left ends carry blades 24. The blades 24 end substantially in a semicircle, so that, when they are brought towards each other and are engaged with the sealing bar which is located between them, they can make a notch in the overlap of this sealing bar and, during the relative movement of said bar, remove from the metal core, the covering material carried by it, to the right of the point where the knives engage.

The arms 23 are pulled by means of springs 25 around their pivot point, so as to apply the knives 24 on the sealing bar. The opposite ends of the arms 23 carry rollers 26 which run on the cam arms 21. On the rod 16 is fixed a soft iron core 27 which, when the electromagnet 19 is energized, as will be indicated later, tends to enter a neutral position inside this electromagnet.

A console 28 also carried by the casing 17 carries a switch arm 29 which pivots at 30. The console 28 carries stops 31, 32, the latter being electrically isolated from the console 28.

A spring 33 connects the switch arm 29 and the right end 34 of the shaft 16 and the points where the spring is fixed on the switch arm and on the shaft are arranged such that when the shaft 16 is in its far left position, the switch arm
29 engages with stop 31 and when arm 16 has moved to the right by a determined distance, spring 33 swings switch arm 29 to rest against contact stop 32. Another console 35 similar to console 28 is carried by the envelope 17 and, on this console 35, a switch arm 36 pivots, which is connected to terminal 34 of rod 16 by means of a spring 37.

On the console 35 are mounted contacts 38 and 39, the latter being electrically isolated from the console 35.

A suitable source of electrical power, for example a battery 40, is connected by means of a wire 41 to the block 38. A wire 42 connects the switch arm 36 to the console 28 and a wire 43 leading from the contact. 32 goes to the electromagnet 19 which is itself connected by the wire 44 to the other end of the battery.

The device described above works as follows:
The reciprocating movement of the feed arm 6 successively brings a number of seal bars 11, not covered, into the feed tube 5 and into the extruder 3 through which they pass. Because the outlet opening 13 of the extruder is wider than the seal bar, a sheath of cover material is pressure applied to the seal bars as they exit from the extruder 3. that the front end 45 of a covered sealing bar touches the rod 16, it moves the latter to the right by a certain distance, in antagonism to the action of the spring 18.

Once the end 45 of the seal bar has been moved to the right by a determined amount and has moved between the knives 24 by that amount, the spring 33 passes past the pivot point 30 of the arm d. 'switch 29 and swings this arm to engage with contact 32, thus closing the circuit which passes through the electromagnet 19. The electromagnet 19 being energized, pulls the core 27 and the rod 16 to which it is set, to the right, at a greater speed than that at which the end 45 of the seal bar moves to the right.

Moving the bar 16 to the right in this way causes the rollers 26 of the arm 23 to enter the recessed portions of the cam arms 21, allowing the spring 25 to apply the knives 24 to the end 45 of the cam. the sealed sealing bar. The electromagnet 19 continues to move the rod 16 to the right and therefore the knives 24 scrape off from the end of the seal bar 45 the overlap which was previously applied to it. in the extruder.

The bar 16 continues to move to the right under the action of the electromagnet until the knives 24 escape from the end. 45 of the sealing bar on which they act. Shortly after the knives have thus escaped from the end of the sealing bar, the spring 37 passes through the pivot point of the switch arm 36 and moves the latter which ceases to be in engagement with the contact 38. and brings it to the isolated contact 39 thus interrupting the circuit of the electromagnet. The electromagnet is thus de-energized and the spring 18 tends to bring the rod 16 back to the left.

However, this return movement is prevented by the knives 14 which are in the closed position and which engage the end 45 of the seal bar which has just been cleaned. This return movement being stopped, the spring 37 cannot return beyond the pivot point of the interrupting arm 36, so that the electromagnet is not immediately re-energized.

The sealing bar which is being operated continues to move when exiting the extruder 3 and as soon as the sealing bar is completely out, it falls into a suitable hopper, not shown, which can be placed below the space between the outlet end of the extruding machine 3 and the knives 24.

As soon as the sealing bar has fallen, the spring 18 is able to return the different parts of the apparatus 4 to the position which is substantially that shown in the drawing, that is to say that the switch arm 36 is re-engaged with the contact 38 and the switch arm 29 with the stop 31 and that the rollers 26 pass over the tightened part of the cam fingers 21 and open the knives 24 allowing a new sealing bar to be received coming out of the extruding machine 3.

In the variant shown in FIGS. 2 to 4, in the extruding press 46, are fed the previously cut sealing bars which it is desired to cover and this covering is applied in this press 46. In the vicinity of the opening 47 through which the covering or sheath is extruded on the welding bars which pass through it, is mounted a device 48 for closing the passage between the bar and the edge of the opening 47. This device 48 comprises a casing 49 which can be bolted or otherwise fixed to the body of the extruding machine 46.

In the casing 49 is a rotating disc 50 provided with a control arm 51 which passes through an arcuate slot 52 provided for this purpose in the casing 49, as can be seen above all in FIG. 4. A number of jaws 53 arranged radially
 are slidably mounted in
radial grooves of the casing 49. The mast
43 have lugs 54 on which
are mounted rollers 55 arranged in a
cam groove 56 of the disc 50 having the form
 shown in fig. 3.

   Lever rotation
control 51 and, accordingly, the dis
que-cam 50 causes the jaws 53 to fit
 move radially inward and outward
outside, following the movement of this arm
   51. The inner end 57 of the jaws
53 is arcuate having a shape and
general dimension such as, when the mats
choirs are brought into their position which
is the most inward, they determine
undermine a circular opening which has sensi
the same diameter as the core
size of the sealing bar on which
 we operate.

   Jaws 53, when moving
ment of the arm 51 in a determined way, little
wind, therefore, be used to shrink
the opening, through which the sealing bar
58 passes, in such a way that it cannot sensi
 no covering material flow
 lying on this bar.

As can be seen in FIG. 4, an electromagnet 59 operates with the device ob
turator 48 and the core 60 of this electromagnet is connected by means of a pivoting arm
61 to the control arm 51 of the disc 50. A spring 62, connected to the arm 61 and to a support
fixed, normally holds the jaws in the open position.

As seen in fig. 2, in ali
Axial development of the opening 47 of the extruding machine 46, there is mounted a control mechanism for the electromagnet 59 which has just been described. This control mechanism comprises a housing 63 in which slides a plunger 64 with a cup-shaped end 65 serving to receive the end of a sealing bar coming out of the extruding machine. The plunger 64 is made of a magnetic substance and constitutes the core of an electromagnet 66 mounted in the housing 63 and concentric with the plunger 64. A spring 67, likewise mounted in the housing 63, tends to urge the plunger 64 towards the left, as shown in fig. 2.

The plunger 64 carries a control finger 68 which protrudes beyond the right of the housing 63 and which actuates switches controlling the circuits of the electromagnets 59 and 66 respectively. On the housing 63, against its right-hand end, is mounted a console 69 on which there is an electrically insulated stopper 70 and a contact 71.

A switch arm 73 pivots on an axis 72 carried by the console 69 and this arm is connected to the control finger 68 by means of a spring 74. Likewise, is mounted on the right end of the housing 63, a console 75 on which there is an isolated stop 76 and a contact 77. A switch arm 79 pivots on a pin 78 carried by the console 75 and this arm is likewise connected by a spring 80 to the control finger 68.

On the console 75 are two contact pieces 81 and 82 normally in contact, the first comprising a projection 83 which comes into the path of the control finger 68 for reasons which will be indicated later.

Any suitable source of electrical energy, such as a battery 84, is connected by means of various conductors to the various parts just described, in a manner which is indicated clearly enough in the drawing so that it it is not useful to give a detailed explanation.

The apparatus which has just been described and which is represented in FIGS. 2 to 4, works as follows:
The seal bar 58, which must be covered, exits the extruder 46 by passing through the device 48 without this device acting in any way on the seal bar until the right end of the latter comes to bear against the plunger 64. When the right end of the seal bar 58 touches the plunger 64, by moving the latter to the right in antagonism to the action of the spring 67, the spring 74 passes beyond the axis 72 on which the switch arm 73 pivots. The spring 74 then swings the switch arm 73 to engage it with the contact 71 by closing the circuit of the electromagnet 59.

As soon as the latter is energized, the arm 51 moves in the dextrorotatory direction, rotating the cam plate 50 in the same way, whereby the jaws 53 are pushed inward and come into engagement. on the metal core of the sealing bar 58.

Since the jaws 53 or, more particularly, their arcuate inner ends 57, are now engaged with the metal core of the seal bar, any further movement to the right of this bar causes the machine to exit. extruding 46 of an uncovered bar portion. Seal bar 58 continues to move to the right, with jaws 53 engaged thereon in the manner just shown, until the left end 85 of seal bar. weld 58 comes into the opening of device 48. As soon as seal bar 58 has reached this point, spring 80 passes beyond pin 78 on which switch arm 79 pivots. This arm 79 then swings to come to bear against the contact 77, by closing the circuit of the electro 66.

With the electro energized, plunger 64 moves to the right away from seal bar 58 and allowing this bar, which is now complete, to drop into a hopper placed in a suitable position below. of the apparatus of FIG. 2.

Once the sealing bar 58 has been thus removed, the control must 68 moving to the right, comes to bear against the projection 83 of the contact 81, interrupting the circuit of the two appliances. The apparatus is then returned to its original position under the action of the springs 62 and 67 and is in the position shown in the drawing, ready to receive the next sealing bar which comes out of the extruding press 46. The de-energization of the electros , in the manner just indicated, naturally causes the jaws 53 to be withdrawn or separated, so that the next seal bar, which will come out of the extruder 46, will be provided with a sheath placed on it by the extrusion press as indicated above.

It will be noted that the apparatus shown in FIG. 1 removes the covering from one end of the sealing bar over a sufficient length to allow the metal core of this bar to be taken in a suitable support, so as to have a suitable electrical connection between this support and the metal core of bar.

The apparatus shown in FIGS. 2 to 4, prevents the application by the extruding press, of the covering on the surface of the metal core of the neighboring bar at one end thereof, so that the sealing bar, manufactured with the latter device, is , likewise, characterized by the fact that its metallic core is exposed at one end, so that it can be conveniently fixed in a suitable support, in direct electrical contact with the metallic core of the sealing bar.

It is evident from the foregoing that this results in coated sealing bars which only need to be dried before use. Since some coatings do not need to be fired, but can simply be air-dried after extrusion and before use, it is seen that it is thus possible to obtain coated seal bars more effectively and efficiently. more economical than has been hitherto possible.

   CLAIMS:
I Production process for penny bars
 hard for electric arc welding,

** ATTENTION ** end of DESC field can contain start of CLMS **.

Claims (1)

** ATTENTION ** start of field CLMS can contain end of DESC **. This arm 79 then swings to come to bear against the contact 77, by closing the circuit of the electro 66. 2. It is evident from the foregoing that this results in coated seal bars which only need to be dried before use. Since some coatings do not need to be fired, but can simply be air-dried after extrusion and before use, it is seen that it is thus possible to obtain coated seal bars more effectively and efficiently. more economical than has been hitherto possible.
