Description

Method for working surfaces by grinding and a grinding device for implementing this method. The present invention comprises a process for working surfaces by grinding (for example threaded parts) and a grinding device for the setting of this process.

When a wheel is used with relative axial displacement between it and the workpiece having the surface to be worked, the front end of the wheel tends to wear out in the shape of a cone. For this reason, simple grinding wheels as they are manufactured and used today cannot be used successfully to work threaded surfaces or other surfaces on parts with a shoulder without the need to dress. frequently the grinding wheel.

The object of the present invention is to facilitate precision grinding, for example in the case where the part comprising the surface to be worked by grinding has a shoulder or in the cases where only certain parts of the part have overhangs. faces to be ground.

The method according to the present invention is characterized in that one makes act one after the other on the working surface of at least one part, at least two grinding surfaces.

The device according to the invention for implementing this method is characterized in that it has at least two distinct grinding surfaces.

An economic advantage can be obtained by means of this method in certain cases, when several parts, by. example, have surfaces to be ground similarly.

In one embodiment of the method, use could be made either, for example, of a single grinding wheel having at least two distinct peripheral grinding surfaces of revolution, or, for example, of several grinding wheels arranged coaxially or at the same time. well and spaced from each other. In each case of this embodiment, the different grinding surfaces can be of the same diameter or of different diameter and can have different abrasive qualities.

The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, two embodiments of the method according to the invention and represents, also by way of example, five embodiments of a positive device for the implementation of this process.

Figs. 1 and 2 represent a first embodiment of the device and illustrate the first embodiment of the method; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 represent the grinding wheels of three other embodiments of the positive device; Fig. 6 represents a fifth embodiment of the device and illustrates the second embodiment of the method.

When it is desired to work a screw thread on a part having a shoulder, such as for example on the valve seat a, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, an employs, for example, the device represented by these figures and comprising two grinding wheels having, hacune a cylindrical grinding surface b, respectively V, these surfaces being arranged in tandem. The grinding surfaces of the wheels rotate together about a common axis and are spaced from each other by a distance greater than the total axial length of the part including the shoulder a '.

The grinding surfaces are of the same nominal diameter and each have several annular ridges with sharp edges corresponding to the thread which it is desired to grind on the workpiece. The workpiece is mounted between points c, c and is rotated slowly while first coming into contact with the surface b, then with the surface b ', these surfaces both rotating rapidly.

In order to bring the respective grinding surfaces of the grinding wheels, one after the other to act on the work surface of the workpiece, it is necessary to allow, in addition to the axial feed, a relative radial movement between the workpiece and grinding wheels.

For this purpose, the grinders, s can be carried by a head (not shown) arranged so as to move radially and axially with respect to the workpiece, or else it is the support carrying the workpiece which moves, or else one of these two movements can be effected by the head and the other by the support of the part comprising the surface to be worked. Both movements can be controlled in any well-known way.

For example, the head carrying the grinding wheels or the support of the workpiece, as the case may be, can be mounted on a slide subjected to the action of a cam, a screw or: another similar member. These slide movements are such that they move the wheels away from the workpiece when the grinding surface of one of these wheels has finished its work on the workpiece, by a sufficient distance so that the shoulder of the workpiece does not. be unaffected by the grinding wheels when translating the grinding wheel support head or workpiece support in an axial direction to a position in which the grinding surface of the other grinding wheel can face-face grind the workpiece (see fig. 2).

Provision can be made for the axial movement of the part to be momentarily accelerated, after the first grinding surface b has been moved away from the work surface of the part in order to: release the shoulder therefrom, after which the normal displacement movement can be continued while the second grinding wheel b1 acts on the work surface of the workpiece. The advantage of the described use of two grinding surfaces in tandem is that imperfect threads left near the shoulder during the rough grinding performed by the first surface b can be brought to the correct size by the finishing grinding. then performed by the second grinding surface b '.

The grinding wheels can be made separately and fixed together between flanges by having a spacer between them, as shown in figs. 1, 2 and 3, or a single grinding wheel can be used, this grinding wheel having spaced grinding surfaces b, F, as shown in, Figs 4 and 5. The grinding surfaces can be of the same diameter - (Fig. 1 , 2, 4 and 6) or of different diameters (fig. Â and 5).

For dressing a surface, it is advantageous to use grinding surfaces of equal diameters, but for grinding surfaces on workpieces with large shoulders, it is advantageous: to use for finishing one or more .Finishing grinding surfaces, larger in diameter than that of coarse grinding surfaces.

To thread by grinding a cylindrical surface of each of several parts a having shoulders, an economy is achieved by mounting, to proceed with this grinding, these parts in series so that the surfaces to be ground are coaxial, as shown in fig. . 6.

The device shown has two distinct grinding surfaces b, respectively V. Thanks to this arrangement, a number of parts can be threaded in a considerably shorter time than by threading them separately; in fact, after the surface to be ground of the first piece in the series has been roughened by the grinding wheel b, the two grinding wheels are made to act so multaneously on two contiguous pieces, that is to say that, while the first grinding wheel b performs the roughing of a thread on part a, the second grinding wheel b1 performs the finishing grinding of the thread, previously roughed, on part a of the previous part.

Each grinding surface having annular ribs may have an enveloping cone having a tapered portion decreasing so that the end first coming into contact with the surface to be worked has the largest diameter, so that when the grinding wheel wears out, new ribs with sharp edges come into action successively on the surface to be worked, thus extending the useful life of the grinding wheel between dressings.

For certain purposes, it may be advantageous to -dispose the grinding wheels acting one after the other on each side of the support of the part having the surface to be worked; in this case, the grinding wheels do not necessarily have to be arranged coaxially with respect to each other.

The abrasive qualities of the different grinding faces do not necessarily have to be the same, it may be advantageous in some cases to use a combination of hard wheels and soft or different grit wheels.

The grinding surfaces acting one after the other on the surface to be worked could also be of different shapes.
