<I>Viseur gyroscopique.</I>
Description du système optique A3.
Un point lumineux P4 est posé sur une lentille L4 de distance focale de 300 mm par exemple. Le miroir du gyroscope 14'14 est placé à 150 mm, c'est-à-dire 1/2 distance focale du point P4. Dans ces conditions, l'image du point P4 se fait en F4 symétrique de P4 par rapport à 1V14;
Réalisation dis <I>point</I> lumineux.
Si l'on considère (fig.
Sight for aerial bombardment. The present patent relates to a sight for aerial bombardment, in particular for dive bombing and which can be used, in certain cases, for measuring the speed of the aircraft carrying this device.
Until now it was necessary, in order to carry out a bombardment by plane, to take into account several factors, in particular: the speed of the plane, given roughly by the. on-board instruments, following its trajectory, the speed and direction of the wind, estimated by soundings before the departure of the aircraft.
These soundings, carried out at a great distance from the site of the bombardment, give only very vague information on their real values, the altitude of the aircraft, of which the onboard devices only give an approximate value, the l 'altitude of the objective known by reading the map, if this objective is well identified.
These various factors, initially vitiated by significant errors, give rise to numerous and delicate corrections, and this method of bombardment results in great imprecision.
The viewfinder, object of the invention, is characterized in that it comprises a gyroscope with a vertical axis, a mirror fixed directly on the box of the top of the gyroscope, an optical system and transparent elements, said mirror receiving the image of a spot qv.i, when it is reflected by said mirror and the optical system, appears on the ground,
the optical system and the transparent elements being fixed with respect to the airplane and established so that the pilot can see simultaneously with his two eyes and without them occupying a precise position, the goal to be reached and said spot which are brought into coincidence by action on the controls of the airplane due to the trajectory of the airplane coinciding with a determined direction such as the vertical passing through the goal.
Any spot appearing on the ground can be luminous and it arises from a light source combined with the sight and mounted fixed in relation to the plane.
The spot appearing on the ground may be a second image of the goal. The transparent element may be a transparent lens or semi-silver prisms.
The mirror mounted on the small gyroscope has a curvature such that its focus coincides with the center of inertia around which the gyroscope rotates; between the light source and the mirror can be arranged, on the one hand, a lens forming. converge the rays emitted by the light source has the focus of the mirror and, on the other hand., a first transparent lens which is parallel to a second transparent lens through which the pilot can directly see the goal.
The prisms, through which the pilot can see the goal directly, can be four in number: they can be contiguous and the surfaces in contact can be semi-silver; the. box of the gyroscope carries a mirror which; can be plane and, above it, can be placed another. prism which together with the other prisms constitutes the optical system, the vertical of the goal being. indicated by the superposition of two images (this goal, one being quickly directly and the other by reflection.
The light source can be placed at the <I> focus </I> of a lens, the rays emitted from this source exiting parallel to the axis of the system, this lens being able to be combined with a system of lenses whose outgoing beam remains parallel to meet a plane mirror carried by the gyroscope, the rays being reflected by this mirror to cross, in return, the optical system and strike the pilot's # i1 thanks to a set of two-way, parallel windows, the goal. which can be observed directly through the ice.
The lens system may include several lenses whose focal points coincide.
The first lens can be convergent and of focal length 2a, a diverging lens of focal length a can be placed at a distance a. from the center of the. first lens.
The magnification of the Peul optical system; be a little taller (read two or a little smaller than two.
The magnification of the optical system may be a little greater than or a little less than 1 '_.
The viewfinder may comprise: a lens of focal length 2a, the distance from the mirror, mounted on the gyroscope, to the lens being equal to ii, a, two two-way glasses and a light point applied against the lens.
The light point can be produced by one of the tapered and curved ends of a glass rod, the other end of which is placed opposite a light source, the rod can be surrounded by an opaque body having an index of very small refraction.
In the case of the viewfinder allows the measurement of the horizontal speed of an airplane in relation to it; on the ground, it may include means allowing the production of a light circle concentric with the luminous aiming point.
In the case where the viewfinder allows the measurement of the horizontal speed of an airplane with respect to the ground, it may include a moving test pattern composed of small equi distant luminous points, the sight being animated by a measurable uniform movement. so that the small points of light, seen through the visor, will apparently move on the ground and that, by adjusting the. speed of movement of the rod, the points of the rod seem immobile in relation to the ground.

<I> Gyroscopic sight. </I>
This viewfinder is composed of a gyroscope carrying, on its upper face, a mirror of appropriate curvature, and of a suitable optical system making it possible to return light rays parallel to the axis of the gy roscope whatever the position of the plane. Figs. 1 and 2 schematically represent an embodiment of this kind of sight: 1o A gyroscope Gi rotates around a point coinciding with its center of inertia II or very close, around which it is suspended from the gimbal by an appropriate crew .
On this gyroscope is fixed a mirror Mi of suitable curvature, the focus of which is at the center of inertia of the gyroscope Gi.
<B> 20 </B> The optical system is composed of a light source Si, a lens Ci intended to make the rays converge at the focus of the mirror Mi and two parallel reflecting systems formed by transparent glasses. These transparent glasses could be replaced by semi-silver prisms.
The optical system is integral with the airplane and follows all its inclinations, while the axis of the gyroscope always remains vertical.
It will be assumed that the plane nose-down without wind (fig. 1), the point Si is vertical to the center Il of the gyroscope, the light rays coming from Si pass through the lens Cl and converge at the focus of the mirror M1, but are reflected by this mirror along the axis of rotation of the gyros cope. These rays then meet the reflecting system Al which sends them back to the second system A'i - from which the rays are reflected in a direction parallel to that of the rays returned by the mirror Mi, that is to say in a direction vertical.
The image of a luminous point placed in Si will be formed on this vertical and at infinity since the light rays coming from Si converge at the focal point of the mirror M1.
We will now assume that the plane is nose-down with a crosswind (fig. 2), so it will have a certain impact. The axis of the gyros cope remains vertical but the optical system, integral with the aircraft, moves with this aircraft. The light rays coming from Si always converge at the focal point of the mirror Mi since the latter is at the center of inertia of the gyroscope, the meeting point of the gimbal axes.
The light rays are therefore always reflected along a vertical line, encountering the first reflecting system Ai which returns them to A'i, from where they are reflected parallel to the rays coming from <B> mi. </B>
So, whatever the position of the aircraft, the light rays will always be reflected vertically. For 1 '# i1 of the pilot, this line can be materialized by a luminous point. Which, reflected to infinity, will serve as a line of sight.
Another embodiment of a viewfinder based on the properties of the gyroscope will also be given as an example.
In this viewfinder, the vertical of a point will be indicated by the: superposition of two images: from this point, one of these images being seen directly, the other being seen by reflection, that is to say that any sighting, carried out otherwise than vertically, gives two images all the more distant, the greater the incidence.
Let be a set of four contiguous prisms R2 whose contacting faces are semi-silver, a prism R'2 and a plane mirror N2 fixed on a gyroscope G2 therefore always horizontal. We will assume. that the eye of the observer is placed in 02. The goal P2 is seen directly through the set of prisms R2. The image of this point is also reflected on the second prism P'2 which returns it on the mirror l12 in a direction d2 parallel to D2.
If the eye is at, the, vertical of the point P2 (fig. 3), D :: is vertical, d2 is also perpendicular to the horizontal mirror 112 which reflects the image, following d2, up to the prism R'2 . This returns the image to the set of prisms R2 which, in turn, reflects the image in a direction parallel to d2, so the light rays have followed the same path on the outward journey as on the return. The direction parallel to. d2 will therefore be none other than D2. The direct image and the reflected image will therefore coincide.
Provision can be made for an appropriate crew to restore the image to its normal direction, so that the two images are seen in the same direction and come to be superimposed exactly.
If the eye is not vertical to point P2 (fig. 4), <I> D2 </I> is oblique, d2 is parallel to it and the mirror will reflect the image in an oblique direction and symmetrical with 2, this image will be reflected by the prism R'2, then by the set of prism R2, in a direction D'2 oblique parallel to d'2 and symmetrical, with respect to <I> D2. </ I> There will therefore be two images, one P2 direct image, the other P'2 image seen by reflection.
Another embodiment of the sight is indicated below with reference to FIGS. 5 and 6.
The mechanism consists of a source, the S3 miner (point or cross), placed at the focus of a C3 lens. The rays coming from S3 come out of C3, parallel to the axis of the system. They pass through a system of lenses: 13, described later, and on exiting, their beam remaining parallel, they then fall on a plane mirror: 11: r perpendicular to the axis of a G3 gy roscope. They are reflected by this mirror, pass back through the optical system A3 and, by a. set of parallel one-way mirrors T3, T'3, strike the eye of the observer.
When the mirror .113 of the gyroscope is perpendicular to the light axis 83, C3 (fig. 5), the ray which comes out of the last ace knows ,; tain is pan <B> a - </B> allele to this direction.
If the mirror z173 remains horizontal (property of the gyroscope), the optical assembly assumes a certain inclination, with respect to this mirror (fig. 6), the parallel rays coming from A3 are reflected by the mirror Q73 by making, with l 'axis said optical system, an angle double the angle of incidence. So that the ray which re passes in the system A3 in sort parallel to the, perpendicular has mirror, it is enough that this system <13 divides, by two, the angles which make, with the axis,
the rays that pass through the system.
Description of the optical system A3. The optical system 11: \ consists, in principle, of an assembly of lenses whose focal points F3 coincide. A light ray entering: in the first lens parallel: at the axis, leaves the optical system parallel to the axis, qubl that is, the number of lenses, provided (read this number is even. It is enough, so that the condition of the divisions of the angles is realized, that the system has a magnification or according to the direction in which one considers it.
In particular, a very simple embodiment will consist in using, as the first lens, a converging lens L13 of focal length 2n3; at a distance n3 from the center (this lens, we will place a divergent lens L'z3 of focal length a3. Under these conditions, the rays entering L13 parallel to the axis, leave L23 pa parallel to the axis.
They are reflected by mirror 113, cross back through L \ 3, then L13. The inclination of the reflected ray with respect to the axis. ÎÏ, the entry of L'3, is divided by two on leaving L1: r, this ray therefore leaves parallel to the normal to the mirror, as in the device previously described, this ray comes to the eye of l 'observer.
Optical devices of this kind make it possible to generalize the use of the viewfinder. First of all, it is possible to propose, no longer to have a strictly vertical reflected ray, but to take into account, to a certain extent, the inclination of the airplane with respect to the vertical of the target. In order for the plane to descend along the vertical of the goal, when there is wind, its longitudinal axis must have a certain inclination in space with respect to the vertical.
This inclination is a function of the characteristics of the glider, of the speed of the wind and of the speed of the airplane which, for their part, is: appreciably uniform after a certain time of fall, therefore, ultimately, only a function of the characteristics of the glider and wind speed.
The projectile, released by the aircraft, is subjected to; wind, and consequently, if it is released laughingly vertically, undergoes a deviation, moreover small, which it is possible to take into account if the optical system A3 indicates a direction as close as possible to the direction that will follow the bomb. considering the wind. To achieve this, it suffices for the magnification of the optical system used to be a little greater or a little less than 2 or even 1 hour, depending on the direction in which it is considered.
The sighting device can also be used to measure the speed of the aircraft relative to the ground, in horizontal flight. In fact, the devices called derivometers, which make it possible to measure the speed of the airplane by sighting a point on the ground whose deflection is being measured, all have a very serious defect resulting from the possible variation of the attitude. the aircraft during the measurement.
The principle: of these devices is, in fact, based on the measurement of the angular displacement speed of a point on the ground in the vertical plane in which the airplane is moving, taking into account its altitude. This angular speed is vitiated by all possible errors, if the airplane oscillates at all during its horizontal movement. With a sight of the type described in fig. 1 to 4, the luminous cross moves on the ground while remaining on the vertical of the plane.
A luminous circle concentric with the cross will make it possible to measure the running time corresponding to a constant angle.
Finally, if by an appropriate device, one replaces the cross of the collimator, by a mobile sight composed, for example, of small equidistant light points, as is already done in devices of this kind, the sight being animated by a movement of measurable uniform translation, the small points of light seen through the sight will apparently move on the ground, and the speed of movement of the staff can be adjusted, so that the points of the staff appear immobile relative to the ground. . The altitude being known, the speed of movement of the airplane is deduced therefrom.
Another embodiment of a gyroscopic apparatus is more especially shown in FIGS. 7 and 8.
A light point P4 is placed on a lens L4 with a focal length of 300 mm for example. The mirror of the gyroscope 14'14 is placed at 150 mm, that is to say 1/2 focal length of the point P4. Under these conditions, the image of point P4 is made in F4 symmetrical with P4 with respect to 1V14;
F4 is the focal point of the L4 lens. It is easy to see, under these conditions, that if the mirror M4 tilts at any angle, the ray, coming from the point F4 image of P4, always comes out: from the lens L4 in a beam parallel and perpendicular to M4.
This simpler device avoids all kinds of aberration and allows a larger field to be obtained.
The two two-way glasses G14, G24 are placed above P4, which complete the device. Realization say <I> point </I> luminous. To realize the light point P4, we used the well-known property of a glass rod B4, to transport the light from one point to another.
If we consider (fig. 8) a small rod which is very appreciably cylindrical, and the end of which E4 is twisted at a right angle, at the same time as it is tapered, if we put under this rod a small sa lamp, in candescence L4, we see that the end E4 appears as an extremely bright point. It suffices to surround the <B>, </B> wand with a black wire, for example, so that it does not appear directly and that only the point E4 is really luminous. An almost point-like and extremely bright light source is thus produced.
The wand in question is. placed horizontally on the. lens. It is small enough that the field of view is not affected.
The rod is generally surrounded by an opaque body having a very low refractive index.
