Description

Hochdruckquecksilberd ampfentladnngslampe.

High pressure mercury discharge lamp. High-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps have played an important role among the lighting equipment of recent years.

The modern lamps mainly consist of a cylindrical discharge vessel that is provided with solid, generally strong electron-emitting substances (especially alkaline metal) and provided with a quantity of mercury. In order to facilitate the ignition,

A lot of noble goose is added to this vessel. The actual D4nt- la, manure vessel is mostly surrounded by a glass envelope, the space between the discharge vessel and the envelope being evacuated or filled with gas (e.g. nitrogen, noble gas or air).

The discharge of these lamps shows the character of a high pressure discharge, i.e. H. it constricts as a result of the high vapor pressure that develops, so that it does not cover the entire cross-section of the.

The discharge vessel. At the same time, the burning voltage of the discharge rises, and this voltage assumes values that are a multiple of the so-called initial burning voltage, i.e. H.

.the operating voltage that occurs immediately after ignition. The operating quench vapor pressure of the first developed lamps is about 1 atm. These lamps are manufactured in various sizes that show an energy consumption of around 150 watts up to a few kilowatts.

Recently, mercury vapor discharge lamps have also become known which work with a much higher mercury vapor pressure, namely a pressure which is usually considerably higher than 10 atm. is. These lamps have a diameter that is significantly smaller than

that of the lamps with about 1 atm. Operating steam pressure. The inner diameter of these newer lamps made of quartz is only about 2-5 mm. A big advantage of these lamps is that @that they do too. for smaller types. z. B. 40 and 75 watts of energy consumption, have a good efficiency.

The invention is concerned with high-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps made of a material whose softening point is higher than 1000 G, e.g. B. made of quartz, and which glow electrodes have a solid state and enables lamps to be produced with high efficiency and long life.

In order to keep the electrode losses low in relation to the watt consumption of the lamps, it is advisable to dimension the lamps in such a way that the voltage of the discharge (here called Vb) is as high as possible. At a given voltage of the power source. To which the lamp is to be connected, however, the operating voltage cannot be increased arbitrarily.

If the operating voltage is too high, stable operation is not possible. The permissible level of the operating voltage depends on the circuit in which the lamp is used.

If the lamp is operated in series with a choke coil from an alternating current source, the operating voltage of the lamp is generally selected to be approximately equal to half the voltage of the current source.

When designing high pressure silver vapor discharge lamps, one assumes a certain voltage of the power source and a certain circuit, so that the operating voltage of the lamp is given. A certain energy consumption (here called B) of the lamp is also assumed.

According to the invention, the inner diameter of the discharge vessel is now approximately the same
EMI0002.0049
where B is expressed in watts, Vb in volts and the diameter in millimeters.

It has been found through tests and calculations that for a given energy consumption and operating voltage, the inner diameter determined in this way enables the most favorable efficiency to be achieved with a relatively long service life (approximately <RTI

ID = "0002.0069"> 2000 hours). Moreover, with a diameter determined in this way, it can be achieved that the discharge is steady (shows no turbulence) even when the discharge vessel is in a vertical position.

Although the inner diameter should most suitably comply with the formula mentioned, certain deviations from the value determined in this way can be permitted. However, the deviations should not be greater than 20%, preferably less than 15%.

The length of the discharge path (the mutual distance between the electrodes) is expediently the same
EMI0002.0099
    elected.

Here, too, B is given in watts and Vb in volts, but the length of the discharge path is given in centimeters. Here, deviations of a maximum of 2W% are permitted.

If the diameter and length of the discharge path are determined in this way for a given energy consumption and operating voltage, the other data of the lamps are also given. For a given burning voltage and length of the discharge path, the gradient (voltage per centimeter of length of the discharge path) is determined.

For a given diameter and given energy consumption, this gradient only includes a certain mercury vapor pressure. As is well known, the vapor pressure from the coldest point of the discharge vessel or, if the amount of mercury is so limited,

that the lamp works with unsaturated vapor, depends on the amount of mercury in the lamp. These sizes must be chosen in such a way that

that the required gradient is obtained. The wall thickness of the discharge vessel is expediently approximately
EMI0003.0001
mm, where d means the inner diameter in millimeters.

The above-mentioned formulas only apply in the event that; the inner diameter is greater than 7 mm, and are particularly important for lamps; with an energy consumption greater than 75 watts. They are also not valid for lamps that are artificially, e.g. B. be cooled with running water.

The drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of a discharge lamp according to the invention.

The discharge vessel 1 consists of a cylindrical quartz tube with an internal diameter of 15 mm and contains two glow electrodes 2 and 3, which are arranged near the ends of the vessel and consist of helical tungsten wires that are covered with alkaline earth oxide.

These glow electrodes are not heated by a special heating current, but only by the discharge. The mutual distance between the electrodes 2 and 3 is 4 cm. The discharge vessel is filled with argon, which has a pressure of, for example, 10 mm at room temperature. There is also a small amount of mercury inside the vessel, which completely evaporates during operation, so that the lamp works with unsaturated vapor.

The discharge vessel is attached to the pinch point 6 of the glass envelope 7 by means of the power supply conductors 4 and 5, which: has the shape of a conventional incandescent lamp bulb. The space between the discharge vessel 1 and the envelope 7 is filled with nitrogen, which has a pressure of about 50 cm at room temperature. The sheath 7 is provided with a screw base 8.

In order to facilitate ignition, an auxiliary electrode can be arranged within the discharge vessel 1 in the vicinity of one of the glow electrodes and is connected to the other main electrode via a resistor. The ignition is also made easier if a thin metal wire is wound around the tube, for example in the middle of the tube, and connected to the wire 5.

The lamp is designed to be connected in series with: a choke: turkey to: an alternating current network of 220 V 50 Hertz. The energy consumption of the lamp is 2.5.0 W and: the operating voltage (during normal operation) is 12.0 V.

The inner diameter of the discharge: vessel, the above formula suffices. The length: of the discharge path is slightly smaller than the value calculated using the formula given for this length.

The length of the discharge path is not as critical as the inner diameter, so that larger deviations can be allowed for the length of the discharge path.

The visible light yield of the lamp described was 50.8 international lumens per watt. If the discharge path was made 5 cm long, the light output was 49.4 international lumens per watt with the same energy consumption (250 W) and operating voltage (120 V).

The wall thickness of the discharge vessel was derived from the formula
EMI0003.0096
calculated and was 1.3 mm. In this wall thickness, however, you can allow relatively large tolerances.

The discharge lamp can be arranged in a reflector of a suitable form. The lamp is not artificially cooled; the heat generated is dissipated by natural cooling. If: the lamp is used to emit ultraviolet rays, the cover must be made of a material that allows these rays to pass through.
