Description

Process for the preparation of a quaternary aminobenzylacylamine. It has been found that by reacting aminobenzyl-aminoaryl compounds with non-aromatic carboxamides in a simple and smooth reaction, aminobenzylacylamines not previously described can be obtained.

This reaction proceeds according to the following general scheme
EMI0001.0007
Here: R # CO- denote the acyl radical of a higher molecular, aliphatic or alicyclic fatty acid containing more than 5 carbon atoms, which can also be saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, R 'R "alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl - radicals that can be the same or different, one of which can also be hydrogen.

The aminobenzyl-aminoaryl compounds used as starting material are generally represented by reacting primary amino compounds that form no or at least no stable anhydro compounds with formaldehyde, such as. B.

p-Toluidine, sulfanilic acid, its isomers and homologues, aminonaphthalenesulfonic acids ETC. with formaldehyde or substances that react like these and secondary and tertiary aromatic amines with a free p-position which contain the above-mentioned N-substituents R. 'and R "included.

Such compounds, for example those made from sulfanilic acid, formaldehyde and dimethylaniline, are described in German Patent No. 116959, according to whose process these compounds are reacted with aromatic amines with a free p-position to give diphenylmethane derivatives. This leads to a new C-C bond between the methane carbon atom and a carbon atom on the benzene ring of the aromatic amine.

According to the new procedure described above, however, a reaction of these aminobenzyl-amino-aryl compounds with the N atom of the non-aromatic carboxamide surprisingly occurs, with the formation of a new, thoroughly stable C-N bond. An interesting, smoothly running new process for the preparation of p-aminobenzylamine derivatives has thus been found.

The aminobenzylacylamines obtained can be converted into the quaternary compounds by treatment by customary methods with unsubstituted or halogen and / or hydrogyl-substituted alkylating agents, thereby creating new and valuable wetting, dispersing and emulsifying agents, but especially plasticizers for Cotton or reprecipitated cellulose can be obtained.

The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of the compound of the formula
EMI0002.0029
characterized by the reaction of stearic acid amide with p-dimethylaminobenzylsulfanilic acid to give p-dimethylaminostearoylbenzylamine and conversion of this acylamine with diethyl sulfate into the corresponding quaternary compound.

The new compound is obtained as a soft mass that dissolves easily in water and has valuable capillary-active properties. It is particularly suitable as a softener for cotton and reprecipitated cellulose.

Example: 1 mol. Of stearic acid amide and 1.1 mol of p-dimethylaminobenzylsulphanilic acid are heated to 150 ° C. in an ammoniacal solution for 6 hours in a stirred autoclave. After cooling, the reaction mass is filtered off with suction and washed with water.

The product is then taken up in hot amyl alcohol for cleaning, the water is separated off and the undissolved amyl alcoholic solution is filtered off. After the solvent has been distilled off, the substituted fatty acid amide is obtained as a light brown, wax-like mass.

By heating for two hours with the same amount of diethyl sulfate by weight, the quaternary ammonium compound is kept as a soft mass that dissolves easily in water and has valuable capillary-active properties. It is particularly suitable as a softener for cotton and reprecipitated cellulose.
