Description
Process for treating substances containing tantalum and niobium, in order to remove other constituents. The present invention relates to a process for the treatment of substances containing, in the oxidized state, tantalum and niobium as well as at least one other more easily reducible oxide metal, such as for example tin, manganese, iron, with a view to the elimination of at least part of the said other metal or metals.
According to this process, the raw material is heat treated, avoiding to produce a melting of the feed, by means of a gas mixture of hydrogen and chlorine containing one volume of chlorine for 5 to 10 volumes of hydrogen. : drogen and this, until volatilization of the metal (s) to be eliminated and obtaining: a product containing, in the form of oxides, practically all the Ta and the Nb of the raw material.
The reduction temperature can be fixed by experience depending on the nature and composition of the feed treated. It will be low enough to avoid a merger: of the load. In some cases, a temperature @ 750 to <B> 1000, '</B> C: has been shown to be favorable.
The raw material can be subjected to preliminary treatment, for example to grinding. It can also be put in the form of pellets or subjected to any other suitable preliminary treatment. It is then brought into intimate contact with the gas mixture and heated to the required temperature.
Any suitable equipment can be used, for example a fixed or tilting or oscillating or other furnace, electric or not, with continuous or discontinuous operation, where the material can be subjected to the action of hydrogen and chlorine gases without entering, con tact: direct with the flame nor with the combustion gases coming from the heat source.
By way of example, there may be mentioned heating in electric resistance furnaces, in crucible or muffle furnaces, or in a retort.
The apparatus can be provided with any known positive device for the introduction of the gases, on the one hand, and the evacuation of the gaseous products of the reaction, on the other hand. It is likewise possible to collect together or separately by any known device, the gases which are released at the various stages of the operation.
It is known to treat tungsten ores with excess Cl and 1'H to remove Sn, Mn, Fe. In this known process, however, the main constituent of the ore, tungsten, is reduced to the metallic state. metal and it is the metal which resists the action of chlorine.
The oxides of Ta and Nb are not reduced to the metallic state by such a treatment and it could not be expected that these easily chlorurable oxides of Ta and Nb,
are not volatilized at the same time as the impurities during the treatment with the Cl-H mixture.
