Description

Process for removing magnesium from magnesium-containing aluminum alloys. In the processing of aluminum scrap of various origins, there has long been a need to remove the magnesium contained in many of these alloys, the presence of which in large quantities would require special measures during remelting and refining from the alloys.

The invention relates to a method for removing magnesium from magnesium-containing aluminum alloys, in which the alloy is exposed to the action of a halogen at temperatures above the melting point of the magnesium halide that is formed. If, for example, the most readily available chlorine is used for this purpose, by introducing chlorine gas into the melt, the treatment is carried out at a temperature above half of 718, the melting point of the magnesium chloride which is free from water.

However, since the reaction rate increases considerably when higher temperatures are used, it is advisable to use temperatures of about 9-0-1000 in the process.

The procedure described above is based on the surprising observation that when a magnesium-containing aluminum alloy is treated with chlorine, only the magnesium, but not the aluminum, reacts with the chlorine, even if the treatment is carried out at temperatures above the melting point of the material being formed magnesium chloride takes place. At temperatures below this limit, however, the reaction does not take place practically completely, and the chlorine escapes largely unused.

Possibly this can be explained by the fact that the small amounts of solid magnesium chloride initially formed at the phase boundary of chlorine gas magnesium in the form of a membrane prevent further access of chlorine to the metal.

Example: 1090 parts by weight of an aluminum-magnesium alloy with 12 "/ o magnesium were melted and the temperature of the melt increased to 950 o, whereupon chlorine gas was introduced into the melt through a distributor attached near the bottom of the open crucible For 45 minutes, 430 parts by weight of chlorine had been absorbed by the melt, and there was heavy smoke from the contents of the crucible8 and a smell of chlorine gas, which indicated the end of the chlorination.

The treatment was then discontinued, the metal cooled to a suitable Giesstem temperature and poured while retaining the slag floating on the surface of the metal. The analysis of the metal showed that the magnesium had been removed quantitatively from the alloy.

A loss of aluminum through the formation of aluminum chloride could not be ascertained to any noticeable extent.

It has already been proposed to treat the latter with lead in order to obtain magnesium from aluminum-magnesium alloys. This creates two layers, of which the upper one is made of pure aluminum, while the lower one is a lead-magnesium alloy, which can then be processed to pure magnesium by electrolysis. However, as is readily apparent, such a process is far too laborious and expensive for the processing of aluminum magnesium alloys in the form of scrap metal.
