Liquid cathode for power converters with a metallic 'vacuum vessel. The invention is directed to: a liquid cathode for power converters with a metal vacuum vessel, in particular for carbon silver vapor rectifiers, for greater powers.
It is known to arrange the cathode insulated from the housing in such .Stromricht- and to make the current inlets from the lid of the vessel with the help of a current conductor, at the lower end of which a current transfer to the mercury, which usually forms the catholyte, mediates Immersion electrode is attached.
It is also known to provide a container made of insulating material for the mercury, which is housed inside the vacuum vessel and has an opening in the bottom.
through which a current feed of the conductor is passed. The current is then also transmitted with the aid of a disk or the like, which makes the necessary contact with the mercury.
Such cathodes have various advantages over the first-mentioned type, but the production: the necessary vacuum-tight connection presents considerable difficulties in terms of manufacturing.
To eliminate the .difficulties: it has been suggested, among other things, as a queukilver container, a special one:
To see shell, which protrudes with a neck piece through the bottom of the vacuum vessel. At this neck piece you then have the vacuum-tight connection of the mercury container with the vessel wall BEZW. made with the current-introducing conductor.
However, such a design has the disadvantage that; the mercury, which is quite heavy and therefore triggers considerable inertia when shaken, rests fully on the mercury container and especially stresses the neck of the mercury container.
As a result, there is a risk that this neck will break off when the mercury waves waves. Additionally, :
that the space between the mercury container and the wall of the vessel fills with mercury during operation, so that the neck piece is further stressed by the hydrostatic buoyancy.
On the other hand, considering the thermal expansion, it is not practically possible to properly support the upper part of the mercury container.
Furthermore, it is known to arrange the mercury container outside the vacuum vessel and to allow it to be connected to a bottom opening of the vessel. The connection between the vessel wall and the container wall is made by a ring flange,
which encloses the jacket surface of the container and is connected to the parts in a vacuum-tight manner. The connection between the current-carrying conductor and the mercury container is also made in this embodiment by means of a neck of the mercury container. Such an arrangement <RTI
ID = "0002.0043"> avoids the risk of the container breaking off, but has the disadvantage that it is very difficult due to the large diameter of the mercury container. to establish a perfect connection between this and the vacuum vessel.
The subject matter of the present invention is a liquid cathode which avoids the disadvantages of the known designs but combines their advantages with one another.
This is achieved through this. that the insulating container for the cathode liquid consists of a shell attached below a bottom opening of the vacuum vessel,
the upper edge of which is supported against a corresponding support surface of the vacuum vessel and the lower side of which has a neck which serves to introduce the current-introducing conductor,
and that for the vacuum-tight connection of the insulating container to the vacuum vessel, an intermediate piece, for example, which forms an extension of the vacuum vessel or a special intermediate piece welded to the vacuum vessel, is provided, which extends up to the neck extension of the insulating vessel,
this. concentrically surrounding, is guided and is vacuum-tightly connected to the neck base, for example, by a melt flow of glass or enamel or by a firing or sintering process.
Such an embodiment has the advantage that the cross-sections on which vacuum-tight connections are to be made are relatively small, since the neck piece used to make the connection can be given a small cross-section.
The connections can therefore be made with great security. The security of the connection is further supported by the fact that the upper edge of the mercury container rests against an appropriately ground surface of the vacuum vessel,
because it is pressed with great force against a support surface by the atmospheric pressure acting on its outside. The proportions are particularly favorable,
if the connection piece between the vacuum vessel and the neck is designed like a membrane and rests against the bottom of the mercury container. Then the full atmospheric pressure can act against the mercury container.
In the accompanying drawing, an embodiment of a cathode according to the invention is shown.
1 is the metal wall of the container of the - # 7aäuumgefä $ es, 2 is the mercury container made of insulating material, preferably steatite, or a ceramic material with a similar expansion coefficient,
which has a neck 3 set. 4 is the cathode mercury and 5 is the current-introducing body, which has a widened head piece 6 to achieve the necessary contact with the mercury.
To produce the vacuum-tight connection between the current-introducing conductor 5 and the neck extension 3, a cap 7 is made from a suitably somewhat elastic sheet metal,
which is welded to the current-introducing conductor and connected to the neck extension 3 by inserting a glass or enamel melt flow path 8 or a firing or sintering process.
The vacuum-tight connection between the insulating container 2; and the vacuum vessel 1 is produced with the help of a cylindrical connector 9 which is welded to the vacuum vessel 1 or consists of one piece with it. An annular flange 10 is inserted between these connecting pieces 9 and the neck 3,
the one hand. welded vacuum-tight to the socket 9 and on the other hand to the neck piece 3 @ by interposing a glass or enamel flux 11 or:
a burning or sintering process is connected in a vacuum-tight manner. This annular flange 10 is membrane-like and fits tightly against the bottom of the insulating container 2. Between, the nozzle 9 and the wall of the.
Insulating container 2 is expediently left a small space in order to take account of thermal expansions.
To improve the flow from the container 2 to the nozzle 9, the space is advantageously filled with mercury by removing that from the condensation dome of the tank. mercury flowing back into the cathode leads accordingly.
The differences in thermal expansion in the axial direction between the container 2 and the nozzle 9 are rendered harmless by the flexible membrane 10.
As already mentioned above and the figure clearly shows, in the embodiment according to the invention the difficult vacuum-tight connections between insulating material and metal parts are only to be made on surfaces with a small cross section, namely on the neck. The security of the connection is increased by the fact that the one against membrane 1:
0 we kende atmospheric pressure presses the mercury container against its, support surface 12 on the vessel wall 1. In order to further increase the resulting improvement in the seal, the bearing surface 12 is advantageously widened and ground accordingly.
To: protect the container 2 against adene arc, a protective tube 1.3 made of quartz or a ceramic material with low heat, expansion coefficients is used in this.
