Description

Process for the introduction of luminescent substances into electric discharge vessels. The present invention relates to a process for the introduction of luminous substances into electric discharge containers, in which the layer of fluorescent material is applied to the internal wall of the container using as binder an extremely thin first layer deposited beforehand and directly on this wall and consisting of a solution of boric acid in a fatty substance such as glycerin,

the container then being heated to the volatilization temperature of the fat.

The process according to the invention which is applicable to glass containers, with a softening point higher than 577 ° C., melting temperature of boric anhydride, is characterized by heating the container to a temperature greater than 577 ° C., but below said softening point, this temperature being chosen sufficient to provide said wall with a superficial viscosity making it possible to ensure the fixing on it of the luminous layer.

As an example of a fluorescent material fulfilling these conditions, mention will be made of zinc silicates and calcium tangstate.

The optimum heating temperature is <B> determined </B> in each case by the nature of the glass. With borosilicate glasses of the "Pyrex" type, it is a little less than <B> 650 '</B> C. With quartz, this temperature is approximately <B> 1100' </B> C. As the heating is always carried out below the softening temperature of the glass, no special precautions, such as overpressure inside the container, etc., need be taken to avoid deformation of the latter. .

By this process, one obtains, without reduction of the yield, containers in which the adhesion of the fluorescent material is much stronger than in the case of a heating limited to the evacuation of the fat.

The powdered container can withstand repeated shaking without risk of crumbling the layer of fluorescent material, allowing it to be transported at great distances, for example. It can be worked with a torch.
