Description

Device for supplying electric discharge tubes by means of alternating current. For the supply of a discharge tube (for example luminescent tube or similar tube) by means of alternating current, it is customary, as shown in fig. 1, to mount in series with said tube 1 a self-induction coil 2 of suitably chosen value, in order to stabilize the current absorbed by this tube. With such an assembly, it is obvious that the voltage between the electrodes obtained when the tube is off is equal to the voltage of the supply network 3.

This must therefore be sufficient to ensure the priming of the discharge when the tube is put into service, unless more or less complicated devices are used to achieve this priming, and this necessity generally leads, as known, at a very low power factor of the installation, especially when the tube is of relatively short length, which is precisely the case when the tube is intended to operate at low voltages, such as the usual network voltages distribution (110 or 120 volts).

To improve this power factor, a capacitor 4 can be connected to the terminals of the self-induction tube-coil assembly, but the reactive power of this capacitor must be relatively large and, on the other hand, if the network voltage is too low to ensure certain starting at the time of commissioning, it is necessary to increase it by means of an autotransformer (or equivalent device) which complicates the installation and increases the price.

To remedy these drawbacks, it has already been proposed to connect the capacitor 4 to the terminals of the tube 1 itself (fig. 2), so that when it is put into service there is, by resonance effect, a voltage between electrodes higher than the voltage of the network 3, this result being obtained by a suitable dimensioning of the self-induction coil 2 and of the capacitor 4. It is obvious due to the sur_ voltage thus obtained can be high enough for that starting is ensured without adding an autotransformer (or equivalent device).

On the other hand, once the discharge tube is ignited, the reactive current supplied by the capacitor 4 still causes a significant improvement in the power factor of the installation, this improvement possibly even being greater than in the case of fig. 1, for a given reactive power of the capacitor. However; the assembly of fig. 2 has a serious disadvantage owing to the fact that the presence of the capacitor 4 at the very terminals of the tube 1 tends to considerably deform the supply current of this tube, and to cause in particular the circulation of high frequency oscillating currents therein. the peak value can be very high.

Such current peaks subject the electrodes to excessive fatigue, which greatly reduces the life of the tube; they can also give rise to very annoying flickering of the light. The fatigue in question is especially marked with electrodes having a low cathodic drop, for example thermo-emissive electrodes for which the deterioration which occurs gradually, not only considerably decreases the life of the tube, but can lead to its extinction by increased cathodic drop.

In accordance with the present invention, this drawback is completely eliminated, as shown in FIG. 3, by mounting in series with the capacitor 4 an auxiliary self-induction coil 5. By suitably sizing this coil, it is possible to keep the current flowing in the tube 1 a shape which approximates as much as desired to any desired shape. and in particular of the sinusoidal shape obtained substantially with the usual assembly of FIG. 1.

Experience shows that, in order to obtain this result, the natural frequency of the auxiliary branch circuit formed by the capacitor 4 and the self-induction coil 5 must be notably higher than the frequency of the supply network 3; it will most often be greater than three times this frequency.

It follows that, despite the addition of the self-inductance coil 5, it is still possible to obtain an excess voltage sufficient to ensure the ignition between the electrodes of the tube 1, by the resonance effect produced with the assembly 2, 4 , 5 at the frequency of the supply network, contrary to what would happen if the inductance of coil 5 did not remain low compared to that of coil 2.

It goes without saying that the constitution of the coils 2 and 5 can be chosen according to the applications envisaged; when they include a ferromagnetic core, it may be beneficial, for example, for the core of coil 5 to be saturated by the corresponding magnetic flux, as long as tube 1 is not primed, so as to promote starting by the application between electrodes of a voltage with a very high flood value:

Finally; it may be advantageous, in certain cases, to arrange several auxiliary circuits of different constants at the terminals of the discharge tube and even to establish a suitable mutual induction between the bearings of some of the self-induction coils.
