Description

Process for the preparation of a mixture of quaternary ammonium compounds. It has been found that a mixture of quaternary ammonium compounds is obtained if one mole of a mixture of the sulfates of the tertiary dimethyl amines, which contain the higher molecular weight alkyl radicals as the third N-substituents, which are in the by reduction of the palm kernel fat acids available alcohols occur,

about one mole of ethylene oxide can act under increased pressure at temperatures up to 1000 C.

The reaction can be carried out in the absence of water, whereby the mixture of the anhydrous quaternary salts is obtained in a smooth reaction in one operation. For example, this mixture of quaternary salts is formed in a short time when the starting materials mentioned are heated to 50-100 ° C. under pressure. However, the reaction can also be carried out in the presence of water. In general, one works under the pressure which is established when working in a closed reaction vessel under the reaction conditions. However, you can also increase the pressure by forcing inert gases such. B. of nitrogen, still increase.

The end product, from which the base mixture can be set free, can be used, for example, as a valuable aid for the textile industry and related fields, as an intermediate dye product or for pharmaceutical purposes.

The parts given in the following example are parts by weight. Example: 245 parts of a mixture of the tertiary dimethylamines, which contain the higher molecular weight alkyl radicals as third N-substituents, which occur in the alcohols obtainable by reaction of the palm kernel fatty acids, are mixed with 500 parts of water stirred ver and neutralized with 200 parts of 25% sulfuric acid. The solution obtained is heated to 90-100 ° C. in a pressure vessel with 50 parts of ethylene oxide.

After one hour, all of the ethylene oxide is absorbed. You hold 1000 parts of an approximately 34% solution of a mixture of quaternary ammonium sulphates, each containing two methyl groups, one ethanol group and one higher molecular weight alkyl group of the type specified above contain. The mixture of these quaternary salts is obtained as a colorless mass of syrupy consistency by evaporation.
