Watch case back and process for its manufacture. The object of the invention is a watch case back comprising on its external face indentations in hollow and in relief, for example decorative impressions.
Funds of this kind are commonly made of gold, silver and steel, excluding stainless steel. For this purpose, it is used either a very thin metal plate whose decoration obtained by stamping leaves an imprint on the internal face of the base, or a relatively thick metal plate whose internal face is hollowed out after striking, for example by a filming operation.
The first method is used for funds of ordinary quality, while the second method is relatively expensive and, so to speak, inapplicable when it comes to the manufacture of stainless steel heads, because the hollowing out of the inner face a relatively thick steel plate significantly increases the cost price of the object.
The watch case back according to the invention offers the advantage that it can be made of stainless steel, for example staybrite, inexpensively, while exhibiting the desirable properties of strength and aesthetics.
To this end, the base consists of two elements rigidly assembled one with the other and one of which is formed by a thin pressed metal shell, for example of stainless steel, having recessed and solid indentations. relief, generally your decorative imprints, while the other element is formed by a reinforcing metal plate crimped in said shell, so that it covers the internal face of the latter.
The base thus formed is very resistant and in no way differs, at least in appearance, from a base formed from a single relatively thick plate hollowed out on its internal face.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in section and in elevation, the reinforcement plate; fig. 2 shows, in section and in elevation, the shell intended to receive the reinforcement plate; figs. 3, 4 and 5 respectively show, in section, on a larger scale, three phases of a process for manufacturing the bottom, FIG. 5 representing the completed background.
The bottom shown comprises two elements made of stainless steel, for example staybrite, including a thin round shell 6 and a round metal plate 7, relatively rigid and slightly convex.
The shell 6 has on its outer face indentations 8 in hollow and in relief, for example decorative patterns, a mono gram, an effigy, etc., imprints which are obtained by stamping and consequently leave imprints on the internal face. of the thin shell 6, as shown in particular in FIG. 2 {reverse view of the shell).
Against the internal face of the shell 6 is placed the reinforcing plate 7 with plain faces. This plate is assembled with the shell by crimping, the rim 6 'of the latter being pushed back over the periphery of the round plate 7.
This rigid assembly of the two elements 6 and 7 constitutes a very solid watch case back with a neat appearance, since the reinforcing plate 7 completely masks the imprints presented by the internal face of the shell 6.
The rim 6 'of the shell, driven back over the periphery of the plate 7, forms the bottom closing notch, which notch is pricked with a chisel. However, this notch could be replaced by a tapping when the back is screwed on the middle part of the watch case.
The invention also relates to a process for making a bottom as described above.
According to this process, the reinforcing plate 7 is introduced into a stainless steel shell 6, previously shaped and provided with decorative indentations in hollow and in relief, by stamping, then crimped into the shell in a single operation with the wheel, by pushing back the edge of the shell over the periphery of the reinforcing plate.
Finally, the background is completed by forming the closing notch 9 with a chisel.
