Description

Process for the preparation of a tanning substance. In the main patent no. 156126 a process for the preparation of a tanning substance is described, according to which man naphthaline monosulfonic acid is heated with formaldehyde and para-dioxydiphenyl sulfone in aqueous solution.

In this process it is not possible to replace the para-dioxydiphenylsulfone with di-cresylsulfone mixtures, which are produced from raw cresol (the commercial mixture of the three isomeric cresol), since in the course of the condensation water-insoluble resins are formed as such are worthless for tanning purposes.

It has now been found that a valuable tannin is obtained without the separation of troublesome resins if the reaction rate of the di-hresylsulfone mixtures prepared from raw cresol is reduced by treating them with formaldehyde sulfite before combining them with naphthalene monosulfonic acid and formaldehyde.

The subsequent condensation with naphthalene monosulphonic acid and formaldehyde then results. Condensation products which are clearly soluble in water and have good tanning properties.

Example: 100 parts of sulfane from raw cresol, a mixture of the three isomeric cresols, represents according to the method of patent no.

190422, 10 parts of 32% sodium hydroxide solution, 80 parts of water, 20 parts of 30% formaldehyde and 30 parts of sodium sulfite free of water, are heated to boiling for 6 hours and precipitated with a mineral acid. The resulting water-insoluble resin is used in a solution of 100 parts of naphthalene monosulphonic acid as a crude sulphonation mixture, as can be achieved, for example, by heating 520 parts of naphthalene and 560 parts of sulfuric acid to 160 to 170 parts for several hours. B> C receives,

60 parts of water and 40 parts of 30% formaldehyde heated to boiling for -2 hours. The end product is clearly soluble in water and has good tanning properties.
