Process and installation perfected for the hooping of pipes and other parts. There is known a method of shrinking pipes or other parts, solid or hollow, made of steel, cast iron, reinforced concrete or not, or any other material, consisting in heating, before winding on the pipe or other part, the shrinking wire, of circular section, flattened or otherwise, so as to cause a temporary expansion of this wire which, by cooling down after winding, tightens, by this sole fact, on the hooped part.
Furthermore, a process is also known for the heat treatment of steel wires for hooping or other use consisting in heating this wire above a processing point, then in abruptly lowering its temperature, by for example, by passing it through a bath of a molten metal or alloy (lead. or other), the purpose of this heat treatment process is to modify the mechanical or other properties of the wire and, in particular, to increase its tensile strength.
The present invention relates to an improved method and installation for the hooping of pipes and other parts by means of a metal wire. This process is remarkable by a heat treatment with the hooping wire, by heating followed, just before winding, by a sudden lowering of the temperature, such that the wire is after this treatment at a temperature above the temperature. ambient and that the heating necessary for the expansion of this wire before its winding is eliminated or at least reduced in importance.
In this way, a significant saving is achieved in the heating.
Preferably, the initial heating is carried out electrically and the abrupt lowering of the temperature is effected by passing the wire through a bath of a molten metal or alloy.
The installation for the application of this process comprises in combination a device for feeding wire, a device for heating to a temperature above the point of transformation of the metal or alloy constituting the wire, a device for abrupt lowering of the wire. the. wire temperature, and a hooping turn.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, very schematically represents an embodiment of an installation according to the invention.
According to the drawing. the installation comprises a rotary reel 1 from which the hooping wire is unwound. This wire passes over a brush 3 re linked by means of a rheostat 4 (or other adjustment device) to one of the poles of an electric source 5. The wire 2 then passes over the return rollers 6 , 7 and 8, which requires it to be immersed in a bath 9 of lead or other metal. or molten alloy, contained in a tank 10. It is finally wound on the pipe or other part 11 to be shrunk. This part turns in: the direction of arrow f1 around its axis 12.
The tank I h can be provided with means (the heating for the melting of the bath 9 (the latter can possibly be poured molten into the tank 10 <B>) </B>, and'or means (the circulation cooling air, water or the like, these heating and / or cooling means being arranged in any manner known per se to maintain the temperature of the bath at the desired value.
The second pole of the electric source 5 is connected by the conductor 13 to the tank 10, so that the wire 2 is traversed by an electric current between the brush 3 and the bath 9 if the latter is. driver.
The operation: is as follows: The rheostat 4 is adjusted so as to cause the electric heating of the wire \? above one of the processing points of the steel or other alloy constituting it, for example, at a temperature T greater than <B> 900 '</B> in the case of steel. Furthermore, the temperature of the bath 9 is adjusted to a value t lower than the point of transformation of the metal or alloy constituting the hooping wire, suitable so that the latter maintains a quenching structure (in the case of sorbite or troostite steel or martensite, etc.).
The hooping wire therefore leaves the bath at this temperature close to t, and consequently with an expansion greater than, equal to or less than that desired.
If it is greater, a sufficient length of wire or additional cooling elements are arranged between the bath and the pipe so that the winding takes place at the desired lower temperature. If, on the contrary, the expansion due to the temperature t is. insufficient, additional heating devices are provided between the bath and the pipe.
The container 10 can be fixed or movable longitudinally along the pipe 11, as well as the reel 1. The device can include additional rollers or return members.
The initial heating can be provided by means other than electrical, for example by one or more gas burners. The temperature reduction can be ensured other than by a bath of molten metal or alloy, for example by means of a jet of cold fluid. In this case, as well as in the case of an electrically non-conductive bath, the electric heating circuit can be closed, for example, by one of the rollers 6, 7 or 8.
The installation can be used for a single hooping wire or be multiple so as to serve for several wires arranged in parallel and used simultaneously.
