Description

Process for preparing a cellulose solution. The present invention relates to a method of preparing a cellulose solution having a low ammonia content, which can be used for the manufacture of rayon or for coating fabrics or else for other similar uses.

According to this process, the cellulose is impregnated with a solution of a water-soluble copper salt and a solution of ammonium hydroxide and an alkali hydroxide is added, the reaction being carried out at low temperature.

The object of the invention is to obtain more precise control of the reagents used in the process, by impregnating the material with a solution of copper salt before introducing the reactants with the solution of copper salt and with cellulose.

According to the preferred embodiment of the process, a solution of ammonium hydroxide and an alkaline hydroxide is used at a concentration of between 25 and 117.6 grams. ammonia per liter; a cellulose solution is thus obtained having the desired low content of ammonia necessary for the economical spinning of the cupro-ammoniacal rayon.

The process provides a solution with a cellulose concentration suitable for modern spinning processes, using either prepared linters or prepared wood pulp as a source of cellulase, the concentration in question up to about eight. percent. cellulose.

The treatment of the cellulosic fibers can be carried out such that a substantially complete solution of the pulp is obtained, which solution can be spun into a dilute alkaline solution, washed with acid, then with water and dried for le, spun rayon production. The cellulose solution can, of course, be spun by any other spinning process known in the art.

In practice, a suitable cellulosic material of known alpha-cellulose content is impregnated with a solution of any water soluble copper salt. Satisfactory results have been obtained with copper sulfate, copper nitrate, copper brine or copper chloride.

The concentration of the copper salt solution is determined by the desired cellulose concentration in the final solution: a higher cellulose concentration in the final solution requires a more concentrated copper salt solution. The report. copper to cellulose and that of ammonia to copper are constant - hence the variable is the concentration of the copper soil solution.

A cellulose solution can be obtained by impregnating the cellulose in a solution of copper sulphate at a concentration of between 100 and 400 grams of copper sulphate per liter, then by dissolving the cellulose obtained by slowly adding a solution of ammonium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide at a concentration between 25 and 117.6 grams of ammonia per liter and between 15 and 94.08 grams of sodium hydroxide per liter, the temperature of the solution being maintained in the vicinity of 4 C.

A preferred embodiment of said invention is as follows: 369.41 cm 3 of a copper sulphate solution containing 58.37 grams of CuSO 3 are added. 5 H..O to 38 grams of dry alpha cellulose in the form of flax or paste.

After the paste or ilinters have been completely shredded and impregnated by kneading, 630.59 cm 3 of a containing solution is added. 28 grams of NH., And 18.7 grams of NaOH. This latter solution is added slowly and at low temperature, for example at 4 ° C; cellulose dissolving occurs faster and more completely at low temperature. You can replace part of the water with crushed ice to bring the final volume to one liter.

Such a cellulose solution can be spun in dilute alkali solution and the filaments washed in acid, then in water, and finally dried for the production of ideal rayon.

It is understood that the preceding example, in which particular materials, weights and proportions have been given, has been given only by way of illustration of the invention. this is not limited to the particularities described and may include various modifications without its economy being impaired.
