Description

   Les   fig. 1    et   2    montrent en élévation deux appareils constituant ces deux formes   d'exé-    cution ;

Apparatus for making intimate contact between gases and liquids.

The absorption of gaseous substances by liquids can be considered as the diffusion of gaseous molecules through stationary films which delimit the surfaces of the two phases. The rate of diffusion depends, first, on the individual properties of the reactants, and second on the conditions for carrying out absorption.

In all the hitherto known types of absorbers, account has generally been taken of only a part of the useful absorption factors, but never of all the favorable influences together. In addition, the constructive realization of these devices and their operation were often complicated and unsafe.

The object of the present invention is to avoid these drawbacks and to create a type of apparatus which makes it possible to carry out, under identically favorable conditions, absorption or desorption, accompanied or not by the evacuation or the introduction of calories.

The apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises, at least one specification. in which is mounted at least one pipe closed at one end, extending from one end of said container to the other and provided with a series of radial openings arranged so that a liquid sent under pressure in the pipe is projected against the walls of the tank in the form of jets all together forming a series of transverse liquid curtains, said receptacle being provided, on the one hand, with an inlet opening arranged so that the gas which must come into contact with this liquid, be admitted.

in the container axially, so as to pass through the liquid curtains and the jets of liquid rebounding from the walls, thus causing a swirling of the mixture of liquid and gas, and, on the other hand, of an exhaust opening located at the opposite of said inlet opening.

In this apparatus, the contact between the liquid and the gas can take place on a very developed contact surface and between sufficiently fine liquid particles, moving at a considerable speed and being arranged in the form of substantially parallel curtains and a gas current passing through - possibly also at high speed - the series of curtains of liquid droplets. As a result of this meeting at a suitable angle of a gas stream with curtains of droplets, one obtains a vortex of the phase which remains gaseous which entrains part of the liquid droplets.

In addition, the liquid curtains projected at high speed against the walls of the apparatus rebound in the spaces between two contiguous curtains, forming liquid projections directed in substantially opposite directions and at varying angles with respect to the jets forming the curtains. In this way, the gas passing through the apparatus in a direction normal to the liquid curtains in correspondence of the ri deaux is entrained in one direction, while in correspondence of the jets of liquid rebounding from the walls is entrained in substantially the opposite direction.

In this way, multiple vortices are generated in the apparatus causing intimate contact between the very fine droplets and almost liquid mist and the gas phase, with efficiency of reaction rate and heat exchange, although higher than those obtainable by other methods and equipment.

The operation of this device is therefore based on a succession of gas washes by numerous curtains of liquid projected through the device at a very high speed. The gas is strongly swirled, during its passage, by the mechanical action of the liquid jets, functioning as baffles. The liquid curtains, passing through the device, carry out an intensive washing of the gas and absorb (or desorb) substances and heat.

The greater part of the sprayed liquid then flows over the walls, continuing during this flow the normal heat exchange between the interior and the exterior. Thus the apparatus has a double thermal action.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.

   Figs. 1 and 2 show in elevation two devices constituting these two embodiments;
Figs. 3 and 4 respectively show a longitudinal and transverse section of the apparatus according to FIG. 1, during operation.

The apparatus according to fig. 1 comprises a cylindrical container t. arranged horizontally and made of suitable material, for example ordinary or stainless steel sheet. lead, copper, etc. In the lower part of the container is provided a longitudinal disperser pipe 8 closed at one end and pierced with calibrated holes F (see Figs. 3 and 4) arranged over the entire length of the disperser pipe. Instead of a single pipe, one could possibly provide pl. men. arranged in one or more rows.

The circulation liquid is sent through this pipe to disperse under a pressure of 1 to 3 kg, for example using a pump or a suitable device for this purpose. The liquid leaves the calibrated holes F in the form of jets G at a speed corresponding to the injection pressure, equal, for example 1] 5-20 meters per second. Several rows of t. rous being provided in the pipe 8, the jets form numerous transverse curtains of liquid with a very intense action as can be seen in FIGS. 3 and 4.

The closed end of the pipe 8 forms a pocket where. under the effect of inertia, settle. almost all the Impurities carried by the liquid. Thus, the possibility of hole plugging is reduced to a minimum. The gas to be treated enters the container through an inlet pipe 2, passes through zone A of the dispersed liquid and leaves through an outlet pipe 3. The sprinkling liquid performs the following circuit: cylinder 1, pipe 5, refrigerated - additional stream 6, circulation pump 4. piping 8 and dispersers a. The liquid level in the cylinder is kept constant using an overflow 9.

The outer surface of the cylinder is sprinkled with water, distributed regularly by a suitable device.

Fig. 2 shows an apparatus comprising t. Three cylindrical receptacles A, B and C superimposed on each other and connected in series with respect to each other. The gas to be treated enters the container A, passes through the container B, and finally leaves the container C through the pipe 10. The sprinkling liquids are injected into the respective containers using the pumps c, d and e. The excess liquid is continuously transferred from one container to the one located below through an overflow. The liquid finally leaves the container A through the overflow 40. The surfaces of the containers can, if necessary, be cooled or heated externally.

The apparatuses described can be widely applied for all absorption or desorption processes, for cooling or for heating different gases.

If more than one dispersing tube is provided, these can be installed in the container either at the same height or at different levels. The number of disperser pipes in each apparatus can be varied arbitrarily.

The coolant can circulate in the device, as required, either in a closed circuit, or in an open circuit, or in a combination of the two, independently or in conjunction with other devices.

The lower part of the container 1 can be used to accumulate liquid there after the exchange. The liquid level is maintained using a suitably arranged overflow.

In the event that the surface of the receptacle is insufficient in relation to the quantity of calories to be evacuated or supplied, this surface can be increased by installing additional refrigerants or heatersg for the liquid either on the suction or on the discharge of the pump, or in any point of the open circuit if the latter is applied.

The apparatus can also include several containers mounted in parallel.

The following examples illustrate the use of the devices described in certain practical cases:
 Example 1:
The hot nitrous vapors, coming from the oxidation of 4 T. of ammonia per 24 hours, are introduced at 500, into an absorber-refrigerant 2 m in diameter eb'd, e 12 m in length, constructed of sheet metal. stainless steel. The apparatus is fitted with two pumps, injecting into the interior via six dispersers 40 ms per hour of circulating acid. The outer walls of the cylindrical vessel are cooled with water to 15. During its passage, the gas cools you down to 25.

In the apparatus almost all of the water supplied is condensed with the gas and 34% of the nitrogen oxides, forming nitric acid with a concentration of approximately 44%.

The apparatus thus designed simultaneously ensures the cooling of the hot nitrous vapors and the absorption of the nitrogen oxides.

   Example 2:
The nitrous vapors, cooled in an absorber-refrigerant described above, are then introduced into a set composed of six absorber-refrigerants of the same dimensions. Each of the cylindrical containers is fitted with a circulation pump and six dispersers. The absorbers are arranged in series and in cascade. By introducing the washing water into the last apparatus, the gas is washed against the current by removing from the first apparatus the nitric acid resulting from a concentration varying between 50 and 55%.

The heat of reaction released during absorption is removed by suitable spraying of the surfaces! outside with cold water. The absorption yield is approximately 96%.

The devices described are remarkable by their efficiency, by their high efficiency, by an insignificant resistance to the passage of gas, by the absence of additional containers and refrigerants of the liquida, by a very reduced length of the. piping and, in general, by their simplicity of construction and operation.
