Description
Process for the production of films containing tobacco dust. There is already a method for the produc- tion of artificial tobacco leaves known (German Patent No. 464202), in which tobacco dust is used with cellulose soluble in organic solvents, eg. B. acetylcellulose, kneaded in the presence of a solvent such as acetone, ether, alcohol and brought into the desired sheet shape.
It has now been found that such cellulose derivatives are not suitable binders for the production of tobacco films. Their taste affects the enjoyment of smoking. In addition, such binders are relatively expensive due to the need to work with organic solvents. The recovery of the solvents is associated with costs and losses.
It has now been found that these difficulties can be overcome by using a water-soluble cellulose derivative as a binder for the tobacco dust.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of tobacco dust-containing films using a cellulose derivative as a binder for the tobacco dust, which is characterized in that a water-soluble cellulose derivative is used as the binder.
Such cellulose derivatives are primarily water-soluble cellulose ethers, especially methyl cellulose. By using these substances, a significant saving is achieved, since the only solvent used is water. It also turned out that the combustion products of the cellulose ethers, especially methyl cellulose, have practically no effect at all on the taste of the tobacco. Methyl cellulose still has the advantage of being extremely economical in use as a binder.
For the formation of a coherent leaf from tobacco dust 50 have been proposed by the acetyl cellulose. Of the methyl cellulose, however, only 15-20% and less are required. Even very dilute solutions of methyl cellulose bind tobacco dust very well. In addition to the high binding capacity of methyl cellulose, there are other advantages. The tobacco foils made with methyl cellulose are so swellable with water that very plastic skins are obtained, which can be used excellently as a cover sheet for cigarettes.
To produce the films, for example, the procedure is to add enough tobacco dust to an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose that 9 parts of tobacco are added to 1 part of the cellulose ether. After it has been evenly distributed, the watery suspension is poured onto a pane of glass, after most of the water has evaporated, the film is removed from the pouring pad and made completely air-dry.
The tobacco foils produced according to the present invention can be brought into various shapes, such as fine cut, coarse cut or tobacco leaf. The shredding can be done by cutting or simply crumbling, depending on the amount of binder.
